There's something people need to understand, with it's vast presence, Portuguese were just a few and could never (would never) impose themselves thru sheer force. The other particularity was that Portuguese, contrary to other European countries, mixed themselves with the population, leading to a better understanding of the local cultures. You can still see it today in Portugal population, and the presence of people from all around the world!

The Portuguese are Europeans whom Japan people have met for the first time.　At that time Japan imported a lot of things from Portugal. As a musician, I had the honor of being part of the Portuguese cultural embassy at the official celebrations of the 450 years of Portugal/Japan friendship, in Tokyo and Nagasaki. I then met many Japanese people, with some of whom I maintain a solid friendship. They were unforgettable days, which will last throughout my life. Amazing documentary, I have become enchanted with Portugal's history

The Portuguese instinctively knew that the greatest power was not attained through weapons and brute force. The greatest power was that attained by love. Empires come and go but the power of the spirit, love, is eternal .

This is such a calming thing to watch before bed.

The Portuguese empire didnt fall, because after Asia came Brazil and Brazil was so rich that the entire European continent became rich. In fact before Brazil, the Europeans weighted gold in grams, but after Brazil the gold started to be defined in tons.

Goa has been totally de characterized by the invasion of all kinds of human predators, looking for a quick buck regardless of what they are doing to the land, and the real Goans and their Indo Portuguese culture. Miss that beautiful place though, and I love the fact we Portuguese at once made this place such a beautiful heaven. As for Malaca, what an amazingly group of Malay Portuguese! I didnt even know they existed until I stumbled into the Portuguese Settlement and their spoken Kristang which I understood quite well! I could cry of joy. What an amazing group of people. Bless them all.

A Ditadura de Salazar, a guerra colonial, veio sim terminar o nosso contacto como nação em Africa, depois de tantas centenas de anos de esforço em manter comercio com Africanos, em meia duzia de anos os fascistas acabaram com tudo...Portugal teve também outro revés na sua sociedade, o terramoto de 1755...

@@manuelsilva6926 certíssimo. Mas já em 1755 estávamos em assentado declínio. Parece me que 1 não soubemos como aproveitar os descobrimentos e colonização. Utilizamos os recursos internos do país sem estarmos mínimamente preocupados com o desenvolvimento nacional e de Portugal (continental) o povo viveu na miséria atroz sob jugo absolutista até muito tarde. Ainda hoje vemos este movimento na sociedade e economia portuguesa onde o pco que produzimos serve para alimentar o sistema/estado e quando queremos crescer dependemos de dinheiro de fora. Isto levou na minha opinião, mais ao constante declínio que vivemos desde do meados do século Xvi. Quanto a colonização sim não acabou, os povos que ganharam a independência nem são os povos colonizados inicialmente os houveram migrações enormes mesmo quando aqueles territórios já eram nossos. Anexação de territórios e uma constante na história não deve ser considerado vergonhosos. Tenho a certeza que todos preferimos que se tenha feito uma colonização a portuguesa do que o desbaste espanhol na América central e do sul... Ou uma colônizacao á lá Bélgica... Portugal como nação cometeu imensos erros que os devemos saber analisar e digerir mas a enormidade na nossa história, dos nossos feitos e da capacidade dos nossos avós não pode nunca ser ignorada. A tolerância as vezes até admiração para com o diferente que portugal sempre mostrou contrasta com episódios mais negros da nossa história como potencia colonizadora e como contrasta com a mais pesada acção das outras potências coloniais. E só pq já sei que vou levar com um desinformado qualquer a falar de escravatura, o mediterrâneo está cheio de pequenos castelos na costa que protegiam pequenas aldeias e povoações sem grande poder estratégico. Isto os constantes ataques mouros e ottomanos tinham por objetivo a toma constante de escravos. Os ottomanos e outras tribos turcas gostavam tanto de escravizar brancos que nalgumas línguas escravo e eslavo era a mesma coisa sendo que a palavra slave terá evoluído da palavra slav. Quando os portugueses chegaram as costas africanas as nossas naus não tinham homens livres com excepção dos oficiais. Eram todos servos estatuto que concede algumas liberdades acima de escravo mas está bem longe de ser uma liberdade como HJ temos. Mais ainda não se registam ataques ou raides Portugueses para a obtenção de escravos. Há sim respostas a ataques inimigos e até ataques a inimigos e ambos resultariam em prisioneiros de guerra que eram escravizados. Havia sim enorme comércio de escravos nas feitorias onde portugueses comprariam escravos que eram tomados por tribos africanas onde eles estavam habituados a vender a árabes e turcos, e os portugueses por terem a capacidade de navegar e até edificar mercados mais perto destes, tornaram mais rentável. Nao há ainda sequer possível comparação com a escravatura em África promovida pelos árabes e ottomanos, onde os africanos eram considerados tão nojentos e animalescos que eram castrados para não poderem reproduzir se nessas sociedade e onde foram escravizados aos milhões durante muito mais tempo... A escravatura e um fenômeno nojento da nossa história humana. Mas tem sido uma constante. Não e um fenômeno que apenas brancos opressores fizeram negros pacíficos e vulneráveis passar.

@@ricardomartins286 Acho que o termo colonização é sempre deprimente, seja à Espanhola à Portuguesa ou a outra, mas sim, à Portuguesa terá sido mais ligeira no geral...porque fizemos muitas atrocidades também, basta ler sobre o extermínio e declínio das populações indígenas no Brasil. A escravatura é uma doença da sociedade humana, e sim ainda existe hoje, de muitas formas e disfarçada...basta comprar um diamante da Serra Leoa. Gostei do teu texto, aprendo sempre mais qualquer coisa...obrigado. E viva a língua Portuguesa...linda " dimais"

Mas são tão mais ou piores que colonização os processos de invasão e ocupação que a Europa e tantos outros sítios estiveram sujeitos durante milénios. Os romanos invadiram nos, os gregos e fenícios fizeram colónias por toda a península antes disso. Dps dos romanos tivemos as invasões bárbaras germânicas e iranianas (os alanos) e por fim as invasões muçulmanas. Tudo isto foram processos de colonização... Mas bem mais sangrento. Todos os países que acabaram por ser as mais recentes potências imperialistas e colonialistas sofreram imenso no passado ao ponto de terem de se tornar forte. E importante que percebamos que tal como disse a escravatura, o imperialismo , o colonialismo são problemas humanos que afectam todas as gentes e que o ser humano ocidental não e particularmente mais opressor ou devasso. Isto sim e perceber a igualdade que todos temos independente da raça... Igualdade que manifesta nas coisas boas... Mas também nas coisas más... Sem perceber isto vamos continuar a promover divisão com a desculpa que estamos a promover inclusão.

Lttle known fact, it was two Portuguese (Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral) who validated air navigation, with their South Ocean crossing (before Lindberg did the other way around). Their studies are present today in every plane, so in a way, Portugal contribueted to that too!

I'd assume the celebration here occurs due, in part, the role that the Portuguese had by introducing the first muskets ever to the land, in ending the warring states era (Sengoku) and therefore aided the process of unification of Japan as united country.

The original film was called A Liar's Tale and was part of a four-part series called Into the Rising Sun. Why they renamed it The Birth of Modern Japan -- we have no clue. It is a good example of ruining a film title, though. Or aat least make sure no one would watch it.
