Japan The Way of Zen : Zen Buddhism Documentary
Pierre Brouwers has travelled the length and breadth of Honshu - the largest of the islands forming Japan - to provide an in-depth discovery of the “land of the rising sun”. Cities like Kyoto and Hiroshima are fascinating for their history. Everywhere, traditions are very carefully preserved, especially when it comes to festivals. But these days robots have largely replaced workers on car assembly lines and the younger generations lap up the innovations of the 21st century. The population, one of the world’s most dense, finds its balance in the words wisdom and harmony. Not forgetting the word that is the key to it all, Zen.
KYOTO. Golden Pavilion, temples and palaces. Tea ceremony. The Jidai Matsuri Festival. Kyudo and archers. The station. TAKAYAMA: the autumn festival. Chayano Tuff. Kamikochi Park. Ogimatchi. KANAZAWA: painting on lacquer. The districts of geishas and samurais. The 21st century museum. Chihirama Beach. HIROSHIMA. The A-bomb dome. The Museum for Peace. The sacred island of Miyajima. Shipyards. Car plant. KOYA: temples, monks and cemetery. NAOSHIMA. Shinkansen. Air photography. -

I do too. But you know it's funny because of their unwillingness to mix with other races, cultures and globalize they've been able to do so. But when we try to do the same in other parts of the world it's called racist, antiquated, and nationalistic.

Japan's culture, people, geography and history are utterly fascinating!!!! Great video!!
日本是值得敬佩和尊重的国家,虽然面临巨大的地域问题,但其文化和制度将坚强地保护人民的生存发展,让人民生活得幸福而有尊严。这种幸福和尊严即使某些更富有的国家也达不到。
Eyes, nose, tongue, body and soul, contact with sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, streams of thought, without defilement, is the ultimate truth of Buddhism..
Although there is very little about Zen Buddhism, this is a lovely video. Gorgeous colors and filming. A good narrator speaking voice and writing.

I've lived in Japan for 22 years and believe me, this documentary shows a very polished, narrow view of society here. As a Canadian I was horrified by the absolute disregard for the environment and the treatment of the landscape and waterways. This documentary portrays Japan in the way that the current government would like outsiders to see it. But its a very different view once you begin living here for any length of time.

As an Asian living in Asia, I respect Japan culture and their Shinto-Buddhist traditions. The Japanese Zen aesthetics are refined and there is so much respect for nature. Because they are so homogenous, they have a strength and identity second to none. The highly ritualised Japanese must have so much pride in their advanced and refined culture and traditions. They are truly the most advanced culture in Asia.

I personally would have said that they adopted culture from China as opposed to stole it. I mean concepts of Buddhism that China has, (if you say stole with regards to Japan), is then stolen from the Nepalese/Indian area because that is where Buddhism originates due to Hinduism. Personally I love the way that culture evolves and adopts and adapts to what is around them. The fact that the Japanese on a whole work together and work hard for their community and their workplace is admirable.

This is indeed the best documentary channel. It does not lack documentaries. It's very good at not not-having documentaries. Documentaries are on this channel. If you were looking for a documentary channel that didn't have any documentaries, than this would be the worst documentary channel. This channel, however, does have documentaries, and it is the best at having them.

such a beautiful country and wonderful culture. thank you
This doc was very calming for some reason, I Love Japan.
As a Japanese, I asked my American, German, and French friends, "What is good about Japan?" To my surprise, their responses were exactly the same. they said Because Japan has a tradition that has been around for 2,000 years and the world's most advanced technology at the same time. There is no other country outside of Western culture where you can have such an experience. The reason why I was surprised was because their answer was completely obvious to me. Indeed, no country in the world has been "the same country" for 2,000 years.

Exactly. I’ve spent half of my working life between Japan (Osaka & Tokyo) and the US….Japan has not only kept its traditions, it has kept its HISTORY…. The only thing in Japan that I don’t care for are its earthquakes (I can’t forget the first time I woke up, terrified, in the middle of the night-to a swaying hotel room, on the 32nd floor-only to run into a yawning hotel employee, who told me, “It’s only a 5.0- 5.5,” and recommended that I “go back to sleep :) ….And while I know how safe & incredibly earthquake-proof Japanese buildings are….they still frighten me….
This is one of the best documentaries on Japan I have ever watched.

At first I thought that what drew me to Japan was anime, tourist spots.. but it was really their way of life. The way they venerate life gives them a vivacious vibe. And it shows in their daily life, the structures, the food.. I wish I could live there and experience all of it.

Superb... very well made documentary. Many thanks and best compliments to the entire team for all the research and hard work. Could you please make more documentaries on Japanese life and culture in general.
So far, this reminds of a Luis Bunuel kind of “documentary”. Oddly interesting. Japanese will say they have no religion. I observe that being Japanese is the “religion”, a uniquely spiritual practice.
Zen (Chinese: Chán • Korea: Seon • Vietnam: Thiền) is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China during the Tang dynasty as the Chan School (Chánzong 禪宗, "meditation school") or the Buddha-mind school (foxin zong) - and later developed into various sub-schools and branches. From China, Chán spread south to Vietnam and became Vietnamese Thiền, northeast to Korea to become Seon Buddhism, and east to Japan, becoming Japanese Zen.

M in love with their independence from religious ideas..And Hi tech yet traditional..We Indians are so stuck and need awful lot to learn from Japan ..
This is what Zen is all about. The title is correct.
I enjoyed this documentary and learned a lot about Japan. The word Zen means meditation. Perhaps the Zen temples did not want to take part in this documentary.
Agree with 'Ben Franklin99' this is NOT a Zen documentary but an overview of modern-day Japan!!

Yeah, others too? I didn't really know that. I mean, I've visited France, Germany, Austria and Italy before, and all I see there are old buildings. The old buildings are mostly absent, in the Netherlands. They're kept in small villages and some cities' centres because suddenly they're important, while in the 70's they destroyed everything that made our country Dutch on the outside. Dutchmen are so used to the Netherlands being called Holland, that everyone's starting to use that name, much to my frustration. And the media, (from Holland) is ruining our language. Last week they said on the news that 30% of all Dutchmen have a dialect. (Implying they don't even mean what a dialect is) When the dialects were here before Dutch. Oh well, people don't know and they don't care. My language doesn't make linguistical sense anymore, because the official book of grammar has become a sales item, so it's being renewed every other year and well it makes less sense every time. Nobody cares.

DClover41 yeah so many countries are losing dialects, languages and important historical buildings. but theres also a self-destruct mentalty in some countries because of guilt due to the things that happened in the past, like Germay. but even in England parts of culture are disappearing :(

Also, I think Germany can move on. Yes, I know a lot about the war, I've been to Auschwitz and grew up being impressed knowledge about it. I just think that many people who had a part in the war are dead now, and I don't think the Germans now can be blamed for what happened in the past. Every group of people has their crimes from the past. It's luck by an accident as we say in Dutch, that a Nazi went to America and became the most important man of NASA.
