hmm, i am always scared to remove it too high so i just do it enough to near "too low". And i think its much better than risking looking like an egg head for the rest of the year.

Actually, you showed that "too low" looks much better than "too high". The rest can even depend on the head shape and hair type - in my case thin blonde hair and a bit rounder head, so that the extra millimeters do better to achieve the look that other people get with having the undercut put a bit higher. - So from my POV, start low and when the hair strands get thicker, beding outwards, then you still have the option to cut away a few millimeters to style them easier.

Getting your undercut cut too high is honestly probably the worst thing that can be done to your hair. Unfortunately it has happened to me multiple times but I finally started going to a real barber rather than Great Clips, Sports Clips, Supercuts, etc. and have been getting pretty good haircuts now that can give me a proper undercut. Getting it cut too low has happened to me before as well but its an easy fix.

Thanks for this video, I just got my hair cut like the green mannequin you have and my corner lines were all messed up. Just got them fixed and used this video to show my Mom how to do it. Finally I I've accomplished a hair goal I've been wanting :)

Yes, my first undercut was done way too high although I specifically warned that I wasn't going for that look. Looked like a mohawk. I was so disappointed I didn't cut my hair for two years after that In hindsight I should have known when the barber told me he didn't know what an undercut was. Obviously I changed salon

Rule of thumb: if your barber doesn't understand what you mean, avoid getting that haircut or avoid that barber. I once interrupted a barber halfway through a session because from the get-go, she had no clue what I was talking about lol

Mine started too high or eventually gets too high from accidentally shaving it too high week after week of maintaining the shaved part. Many times I’ve just waited about a month of growth than just shave a new lower portion where I want it at and let the fuzzy mid hair grow over time and just wear a beanie or hat daily till it’s long enough . I have shaved my head to just start over but I’d rather keep my hair and do it this way . Eventually it’s long enough to go get the hairstylist to cut the top and the part I grew back blends in perfectly . Preserving the long top is more important to me cuz that takes way longer to reach the back then the sides will take to get some length. Try it it’s not bad, top hair covers it up most of the time too.

I had the too-high undercut happen to me at one point in 2020 - at a salon even. Maybe not quite as bad as the one in the video here, but it was annoying waiting for the hair to grow back and even it back out again.

I like the way you explain and your channel overall. That shows passion for hairstyling that suits to other people’s personality and to their tastes.

The amount for barbers who just don't understand this is incredible.

His hair is “thinning” and I watched your video about thin vs thinning undercut. He’s just got his heart set on that undercut, even with his SUPER cowlick bald spot in back. We are going to try. I appreciate these insights, I'm getting my haircut tomorrow and I'm actually looking to get it cut around my temples so it has that sharp edge pointing kind of outwards, and so according to this video it may seem low but I have somewhat long hair at this point (7-8 Inches) so I believe I'll be able to tie my hair into a bun/ponytail or use product like pomade to slick it back.

I remember once I had to go get a haircut from a different barber who wasn’t my regular. He cut one side too high and the other too low. Only reason I didn’t go to my regular was because she was booked up. Needless to say, after I left at first barbershop, I went to my regular one and showed her what happened. She playfully laughed and told me “that’s what you get for going with somebody else.“ In the end, there wasn’t much I could do with the hair so I had to cut it all off and rock dad caps for a good three months.

great video! I've been thinking a long time about how high the undercut should be and came to the exact same conclusion as you - perfectly aligned to the hair line 👍Also, IMHO, it also has the most aesthetic look 😊

I haven't gone too high, but I've done too low. My issue is how to do the back by myself. I'm a beginner with cutting hair, so I have a lot to learn and this has been helpful for choosing a line.

I’ve found that it’s looks great with a taper especially for dark hair

Sometimes when I don't want to fade my hair and switch things up I do a classic undercut with the exception that I don't slick it back but do more of a side part. I use the correct parting as I use my natural part when shaving the hair off but I always think that it looks too rounded and that my natural part is high up. Any ideas what I could do without having to fade?

The high undercut for me is risky but it would turn out as a too-high undercut, so I did the section by myself to align my natural hairline length and tried to do the section an almost perfect straight line. I don’t know if it’s wrong but It would be so difficult to do it by myself to do like a not that curvy section, I don’t know how to explain it, but yep. I wish a good night sleep, mental health and energy for the next video, you are awesome.

I had my hair up n tied back while trimming the back n sides with zero guard cuz that’s how I like it . I knicked the one side n didn’t think nothing of it . When I took my hair tie out . Nothing but loose hairs . Why can’t I figure out where they came from . Do I have to cut it ? Will it grow ? I Deff lost some volume and thickness . Ffs. Nothing noticeable but I can Deff feel it

out of the both of these, I would rather a barber fuck me up and give me an undercut too low than too high. Having it too high looks way worse imho. Also, I think some people can rock a low undercut well. Kurt Cobain in 1992 and Gerard Way in the early 2010's, and it worked well for them!

I went to a chinese hair salon for my first side cut, and they did end up doing it too low. I did not consider when going there that in fact, chinese men LIKE their sidecut low, so the hair can flow down lol The next day i went to another one and they fixed it

It's better to have the under cut professionally. from that point you can trim the undercut yourself when it gets long. top your hair just leave it alone. Grow it out etc. I saved a lot of money doing that for 2 years until got tired of the long hair and the undercut.

mhhh that is the best way to do it. Always having trouble with my cowlick so I will let a hairdresser deal with that. After that is done, I can just buzz the sideson my own.

Yea but if you dont want your hair back all the time its not an issue. I think it comes down to personal preference this isnt universal for everyone

since you're good at it, maybe you can help me out with a question: How do you cut the line when a cowlick is in the way? Tried cutting an undercut and the line went uneven after I reached the cowlick, had to go bald in the end.

Comb your hair over to the opposite side and then just go straight up with the clippers, it will keep you from going too low or too high. Just straight up, no flick or anything. At least that has been my experience.

That is no classic undercut. You will have to use clipper/scissor over comb to take out the hard line.

Hair patterns change every 7 years. This can affect color, shape, texture, the way it lays, everything.

I gave this a like just because u sacrificed a mannequin head just or this video 😂 But in all honesty I have been struggling to give my husband a good undercut and I'm thinking now I've been going too low. Thanks so much for the tips.

same here, did this mistake, tried to fix it and after 20 mins without improvement I was like "fuck it" and shaved my head. Medium long hair to bald within a few minutes.

@@seantran5011 true, most likely it will take about 2 months to reach a short length so it won't take too long and will be back in no time. Even though it was not planned and an accident, it does not look that bad. I kind of like the new style, maybe I'll keep it for a while...

There's absolutely no difference between the low left and low right versions. Hair on top "wants to drop" equally. So that part of the video is kind of worthless. The idea of wanting to avoid an undercut that is too high.... duh. Blindingly obvious.

No offence, but I find it kinda odd to have a bald guy give a tutorial about undercuts

The biggest mistake is getting an undercut to begin with.

My hair has a high natural part. From the sides past the corner, up to the just before mohawk territory be in "very high undercut" territory my hair grows out normally, but for just a sliver on both sides around the peak it grows forward, then is grows up. I did the high undercut, and it looked good. I tried adjusting it a bit and mess it all up, but I think you can go pretty high on the right head.
