The 513,000 mile Picasso will not be with me for much longer, but before it goes I wondered if I'd have any regrets about replacing our own Picasso 'Desire' 8 years ago with a Ford S-Max 2.5T Titanium.
So, what follows is a completely fair test between a 90bhp diesel that's been to the Moon, come back, and has on the way to completing the journey a second time, and a 220bhp SAV that cost twice as much new.
This is why I don't do road tests.

To make this ideally fair. The Picasso needed to be teamed up with a Scenic or Zafira of similar ages and the S-Max should’ve been paired with the newer C4 Grand Picasso.

That was interesting (yes honest) and although ‘the wife’ wanted the Ford… the Picasso proves just how good it is and why regular servicing is all that’s needed and that a logic of “yeah but that £400 repair bill is more than the value of the car” isn’t always the best decision. Service it. Fix it. Drive it. Watched the whole video Richard… as we know all about watch minutes 😉 and because we wanted to.

@@rimmersbryggeri Volvo engines are very cool. Especially the T5. The Yamaha V8 in the S80 and XC90 is very cool too (Yamaha still sell it as a marine engine). C'mon now, how can the Volvo 850 super touring car and Volvo S40 super touring car not be cool with their five-cylinder howl? By extension the road-going Volvo 850R is very cool too. Unfortunately speaking of cool(ing), the Ford 2.5L version of the engine has thinner cylinder walls than the Volvo 2.3L version, despite being in cars (like the Focus ST and Mondeo ST) where it will be driven harder. So they are known to crack the cylinder liners. 😐I guess that won't be a problem on an S-Max that generally won't be driven as hard (or badly remapped with a pop 'n' bang tune...). Speaking of strong engines, the good old Volvo B20 turbo from the Volvo 240 Turbo is legendary for being indestructible and holding up well with 500+ bhp on a stock block too... (Obviously it's an old-school closed deck cast iron engine.)

Adjusting the seats allowed me to carry a full size frame mountain bike! On top the practical touches are simply outstanding. I absolutely Love its very fun to drive feels pretty sporty to Me and often surprises cars it shouldn't😮😉😉 lol and then can fit a load inside like a small van and a tows like a dream and I Don't miss the diesel torque tbh and the towing geometry is a lot better on the Smax always struggled to reverse manoeuvre with the Picassos Tho on a side note I much preferred by Mark 1 Picasso over the 2 facelift models I had was the first was a lot lot better built interior and a few mechanical bits so mine facelifts became a bit of a mongrel from better parts off the mk1 parts

The back seats slide forwards if you need more boot space, the back is square so has extra height in the boot, the seats are extremely comfy. It has the picnic tables in the back and retractable sun screens in the windows. Picassos have done us as A family VERY well over the years even the 1.6 8v one we had (Can see it on my channel). Theyve been reliable and mainly, cheap to run. We had a C4 Picasso (12 plate) for a short while and what a truly horrific thing it was - especially the automatic gearbox... what absolute utter crap! Current 11 plate Galaxy.... love it.. not as comfy as the PIcasso's but a nice place to be inside... Very good economy as well and of course, much larger with 2 extra seats! Parts are a bit more epxenisve though. Dont seem to be able to chuck it about as much as you can with a Picasso, but its not bad to be fair to it, I qute enjoy driving it. Our Picassos have been and back to Paris, which this Galaxy will also be doing - will see how it fairs up. Content on my channel soon, Galaxy goodness.

Regards trim levels, there was a level higher than the sx in the early noughties called the exclusive. I had a 1.8 petrol on a 02 plate. Had front and back leccy windows, climate control and panoramic roof. Admittedly mine had 75 psi or lower on 2 cylinders and a thirst for petrol only outweighed by its thirst for oil. Had 5 or six xsara pics, from x plate to 54 plate over the past 6 years or so as they are just capable at being a car. The LX was the lowest trim,i had an x plate hdi which didnt even come with ac,the sx added better seats, armrests,ac amd front fogs. The exclusive added Panoramic roof, climate and leccy rear windows. Later in their life they could be had with auto lights, wipers and cruise control. The c4 picasso i had a couple years back on an 08 plate was not as good in my opinion. Being a french sadist myself who is a glutton for punishment i keep going back to french cars and have owned numerous 90s and onwards french motors. 4:22 The s max 2.5 turbo has always been of interest to me though. Love this. I’ve been on a few long ish journeys in the back of an S-Max…..a high performance turbo diesel (how many petrols did they make, don’t think I’ve ever spotted a petrol S-Max certainly not a lowly spec petrol) and the ride was horrible. Like being in a washing machine for 2 hours. If there’s guaranteed lots of traffic where u drive….do you need to spend more money to get more power? This would apply to all car sectors, right down to superminis. Choosing the lesser engine might lower insurance, push up economy, and if it’s petrol without a turbo, less points of failure. Btw, David Brent saying “I want to be popular” is the Ford S-Max. 😂

I think reliability is often just luck of the draw, to be honest. The S-Max has gone through periods where it just trucks on with zero niggles, though as with all Fords, there's a point it gets to where you think they just didn't intend to see it last that long, whereas with the Picasso you get the feeling it'll go as long as you want it to.

@@FatHead1979 that engine ain't as bad as made out to be. You have to bare in mind it's probably the mosted used diesel engine across Europe. Friend of mine has it in the fiesta he prides himself on never servicing it at one point it went 3 years without a service it runs perfectly never an issue. My sister in law has one and no issues apart from the DPf because she just doesn't drive it hard enough.
