The Biggest Problem with Saltburn

Here's a little rant about how much I didn't enjoy Saltburn. It's not that serious but I had to get these thoughts about the movie off my chest.

Just watched this last night, my girlfriend loved it, but I hated it. You hit it right on the nose, it wasn’t interesting. The story itself has potential, but this film fails to invest in the important stuff

Finally someone who thought it was full of plot holes, predictable, pointless and used grotescs scenes to try and keep you watching.

The fact that they tried to market this as a romance is very confusing to me… Oliver never wanted Felix. What he really wanted was the saltburn estate…. What a great motivation for our protagonist.

Here’s the thing. Oliver doesn’t really wanted the house until the aftermath of Felix’s death. He wanted Felix in a loving but intoxicatingly obsessive way. He never wanted the house first because he never knew it all. Oliver wanted to leech off that brand new lifestyle he ever craved and comforted, the same brand new lifestyle everyone enjoys. Especially Oliver achieved this goal when loving the people fell and hating the isolation rose. He achieved it to become the abomination by gathering their souls aka shiny things after murdering them. In the end, Oliver is a new being.

The only scene I thought was interesting was the lunch scene. How they all reacted to Felix’s death was interesting to me and the shots they did of each character at the table looked good. That’s it. The grave scene was like… it just looked like absolute disrespect to me.

I mean, there was some blood drinking... 😂Twilight's hardcore fans fantasized for ages about that kind of scene, so I didn't bat an eye when it came up.

I think all of the characters were purposely unlikeable. Which is what I liked about the movie. It might sound weird but the only characters I truly cared for were Veneta and Felix. Farleigh was extremely unlikable yet there was a deep insight into why he hated Oliver-- out of his own insecurities, jealousy, and more importantly because he was drawn by Oliver. That is why when Oliver comes to his room, he allows what Oliver does because he desires it throughout the movie. Farleigh is in denial of those desires, which is why he is an asshole towards Oliver. This shows great character complexity, which is something I like in movies. What makes Oliver fascinating, is his psyche. He is extremely awkward all the time, and when the viewer - along with Felix- finds out the truth about his life, it makes me want to understand Oliver even more. Why is he doing this? Why did he lie? What is his goal? The fact that nobody really investigates Felix' death, shows that that is not the purpose of the movie. The movie is not a murder mystery. It is rather a portrayal of Oliver's desires going to an extreme. Since Oliver was rejected by Felix, the only way Oliver can have true control and power over Felix is by killing him - also because Felix was the only one who knew the truth about him. And the thing with the vampires might actually apply to this movie. Well, in a metaphorical sense if you will. Felix' family are kind of like vampires, in the sense that they seem to live a life different than the rest (i.e. not rich people), and the fact that they constantly have guests over (which change every year as Veneta says in one scene and how Pamela is there at the beginning). Oliver in this sense understands the discrepancy between ordinary people and the vampire-like family living in Saltburn (looking at the breakfast-egg-scene, for example). Wanting to tap into that world, Oliver starts becoming more like them as the movie goes on. He starts dressing up as them, speaking like them, and becoming more confident. And at the end, he ends up killing every last one of them to then finally be the owner of the house. So in this sense, one could interpret that this movie is about Oliver becoming a vampire too. These are just my thoughts and interpretations, feel free to answer with your ideas :)

That's totally fair and I'm glad you enjoyed the movie and got all that out of it. Considering what you've explained, I guess it didn't resonate with me because I've seen similar enough ideas already explored in other stories that were more my style with a character I could actually stand lol

Farleigh never hated Oliver, he was scared, angry, mistrusting, and confused by Oliver’s misrepresentations. He was likable because he knew what’s right about Oliver’s dark nature and he was right all along. He was friends with him until he was framed and kicked out for the crimes he didn’t commit. Asshole or not, Farleigh’s smart and always careful when Oliver goes around and comes around on people’s desires. Oliver’s goal is to manipulate them in order to accept their wish and unlock their love to Oliver. Farleigh stops Oliver for “spell casting” them with his dark morality. I believe Oliver is a total asshole, he seemed to be interesting. Farleigh on the other hand was open-minded and sacrificial when it comes to protect the house from strangers.

Ok you didn’t find a connection to the characters but you skipped through all of the scenes that are supposed to build ur connection to the characters. And it’s supposed to be hard to watch because shocker its psychological horror if you feel uneasy from Oliver’s character that’s what you’re supposed to feel. Also the creepy cousin want just “being cool with that” it was RAPE and have you ever heard of a flight fright or freeze response??? Yeah that’s what happens when you’re literally being assaulted Ranting here atp but why is it the movies fault that you for literally no reason thought it was a vampire movie? 😭 He wanted the castle because who wouldn’t want a castle…it’s an eat the rich movie. He was around the house naked because you only do that in a house you fully own are u telling me you’ve never walked around ur own place naked like Also the widowed lady as you say didn’t just sign over the whole house to random guy her son brought home it was over the course of I believe 17 years that he manipulated her and took care of of her and then made her die slowly so she would sign over the house The plot holes were a bit annoying but also it’s a filthy rich family in 2007 so people liek that usually don’t get investigated especially since the dad was so he’ll bend on family privacy he probably paid them Rant over tho 💀

It was awful. People just embraced the overly weird scenes. Honestly there wasn’t a single point to the movie.
