This is scary AF. In Russia, we have a local freerider legend, Kirill Benderoni (I believe he is living in Poland now). He had a wildcard Rampage invitation in 2013 and rode in the Fest Series, so he definitely has the skills. In 2018, he had a serious crash at his local spot (also went short) and sustained a diffuse axonal injury (DAI). He was very lucky to recover to a state of self-sufficiency, which took him more than two years, there were many donation campaigns both here and abroad. I don't want to scare you, just a reminder that the line between being very lucky and ending up in a vegetative state for the rest of your life is incredibly thin. Be safe.

On the Shore we called that a "Dansition" back in the day. Dangerous Dan would make 15'+ drops with a bike length transition, that was in the 90's and early 00's, we've since moved on from doing silly things like that. You should watch Mark Matthews latest video, he spent over 100 hours building just the landing for a 20'x25' drop, he posted the video today of him finally hitting it, it was butter. Way more process to what Mark did, he even changed his run in to make it more comfortable at the last moment. Lewis was flying by the seat of his pants on this, run in was super sketchy, landing was awful, it's a wonder he wasn't injured worse than he is. I don't build "big drops", but even as a regular trail builder, I could see from the start this wasn't going to work, the landing needs to be at least 15' closer and twice as tall/steep and that would still be sketchy, because it is just too big a vertical drop.

This is the best mountain biking video to demonstrate what not to attempt unless you are a professional or testing your limits with caution. The rider, Lewis, is a professional and he tested his abilities to the maximum. Testing one's limits is essential, but it's important to remember that Lewis is an experienced and excellent mountain biker. Despite careful planning, preparation, and the team's knowledge and experience, he still missed the landing on what seemed achievable but dangerous. If he hadn't been in such excellent form, he could have suffered far more serious injuries. Nothing but respect! When I raced bikes, I took risks and always pushed myself to my limits and the limits of the riders with me but seldom beyond. This was because I felt my form wasn't quite at its peak due to a previous crash or overexertion. During those times when I pushed beyond my limits, I was fully aware of all the risks involved. Yet, I found that I had underestimated my skills almost every time. You cannot truly test yourself unless you TEST yourself! Whenever possible, aim to ride with better riders, seek them out and learn from them! Never become complacent and never think that you have mastered a skill. There is always something new to learn.

One of the issues with this is that the pressure / action from the drop went downward . You basically want to be going forward more than down with bigger jumps hence why the landing is at an angle for longer jumps. The force went down due to gravity not horizontal due to speed of motion. That was partly the issue here, compression not forward motion. The soft turf, short landing, and drop not jump all contributed

I did the (rough) maths. To determine the speed you need to go to land a jump that has both a vertical drop and horizontal distance, you can use the principles of projectile motion. Here's the step-by-step process to find the necessary speed: 1. **Calculate the time to fall 50 feet vertically:** The formula to find the time (\( t \)) it takes to fall a certain distance (\( d \)) under gravity (\( g \)) is: \[ d = \frac{1}{2} g t^2 \] Here, \( d = 50 \) feet and \( g \approx 32.2 \) ft/s² (acceleration due to gravity). Solving for \( t \): \[ 50 = \frac{1}{2} \cdot 32.2 \cdot t^2 \] \[ 50 = 16.1 \cdot t^2 \] \[ t^2 = \frac{50}{16.1} \] \[ t^2 \approx 3.11 \] \[ t \approx \sqrt{3.11} \approx 1.76 \text{ seconds} \] 2. **Calculate the required horizontal speed:** The horizontal distance (\( x \)) you need to cover is 50 feet, and you have \( t \approx 1.76 \) seconds to cover that distance. The formula for horizontal distance in terms of horizontal speed (\( v \)) and time is: \[ x = v \cdot t \] Solving for \( v \): \[ v = \frac{x}{t} = \frac{50}{1.76} \approx 28.41 \text{ ft/s} \] To convert this to a more familiar speed unit, such as miles per hour (mph): \[ 1 \text{ ft/s} \approx 0.681818 \text{ mph} \] \[ v \approx 28.41 \times 0.681818 \approx 19.37 \text{ mph} \] So, you would need to go approximately **28.41 feet per second** or **19.37 miles per hour** to land on the landing that is 50 feet down and 50 feet away.. The question is, were you going ~32kph off the ramp? Probably not quite. Also, the vertical speed at the landing would have been about 62kph. So your landing needed about a 2 to 1 slope. To achieve the smoothest landing, the slope of the landing should match the angle of the trajectory at the point of impact. This means the landing surface should be aligned with the direction of your velocity vector when you reach the landing. The angle of the trajectory at impact (\(\theta\)) can be found using the components of your velocity: the horizontal velocity (\(v_x\)) and the vertical velocity (\(v_y\)). The tangent of the trajectory angle is given by: \[ \tan(\theta) = \frac{v_y}{v_x} \] Given: - \(v_x = 28.41 \, \text{ft/s}\) (horizontal velocity) - \(v_y = 56.67 \, \text{ft/s}\) (vertical velocity) The angle \(\theta\) is: \[ \theta = \arctan\left(\frac{v_y}{v_x} ight) = \arctan\left(\frac{56.67}{28.41} ight) \] Calculating this: \[ \theta = \arctan(1.995) \approx 63.43^\circ \] So, for the smoothest landing, the slope of the landing should be approximately **63.43 degrees** from the horizontal. This ensures that your landing surface is aligned with your velocity vector at the point of impact, providing a smooth transition.

Holy Fuck... Im sorry but the whole video i was like, nahh that landing is 2 or 3 ft further forward then id want that "in my head"... it was that jankey short run in that kept making me think "he is gonna come up short". The speeds just not there. Mate i had all things crossed for you but my gut was screaming because of that short almost tech/precise run in onto that skinny... Full respect for the full send bro 🤟 Hope you heal and recover quick 🙏 💚

Dude, you got lucky this time. Hopefully a lesson learned. Don't break your body, or worse... for a thrill.

Very ballsy, I would not even think of doing that with a landing that small 😱 (at least it looked very tiny) Glad you're ok after that 🙏
