I like how the Crane Hermit modeled his style after King Piccolo, copying his moves like the finger beam (Dodonpa), the flying technique and training his pupils to become assassins. Every major warrior until the Saiyan Saga followed either King Piccolo's (Crane Hermit, Tao, Tien, Chiaotzu, Piccolo Jr) or Mutaito's (Roshi, Son Gohan, Gyumao, Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Chi Chi) style. Gohan was the first to combine both styles.

OG db talks keep me invested far more then DBS talks. I despise most videos on modern DB because essentially it’s the exact same topic just with barely different spins on them. With OG DB It kinda forces you to be creative with the video topic. Plus bringing you back to the days when DB was actually good is always a surreal experience. We need more OG DB vids

As a person who only got recently into DB/DBZ/DBS and watched/read it fully only a week ago, I can definitely say that… DBS feels odd. Introduction of Beerus feels like ultimate out of air MacGuffin™️ , which could have been handled in a better way, instead of “oh, he was sleeping entire time. Oh and by the way, he ordered Freeza to destroy planet Vegeta. That’s totally not a very extended аss-pull ™️ which we only bring up just now, so we can introduce gods of destruction; Super Sayian Blue (I might be typing out transformations names wrong, my apologies in advance) is just… why though? It just nullifies concept of Super Sayian God and more of turns into transformation glorification parade. While earlier in DBZ we have seen actual improvements and struggles of transformations (from SS1 to SS2, from SS2 to SS2 with the bulky form(?) (I might be naming this wrong) with it’s own minuses and pluses, from SS2 to SS3, which has very high stamina consumption)… I like it as well, that the next step is SS3 into SS God, since it reveals more of new era of “god-ki”, but like… what SS Blue introduces? Just plain power up and literally almost the same concept as SS1…? Was there any improvements or struggles- No. There wasn’t any and it’s just a power creep аss-pull, nullifying SS God (I do like the concept of Vegeta developing the SS Blue Evolved transformation for himself though. It represents his character more and his own ways of improvement); Black Freeza… Do you remember how I was talking about MacGuffin out of thin air? I think this will be self-explanatory; Oooooh my lord, the Tournament of Power arc… Where do I start? It’s a snooze-fest with so much dragging out of happening. And the writing due to dragging out of basically everything became more of dull, besides main event ™️ of Goku getting Ultra Instinct. Even then… dude, no; Gohan’s Beast form… Am I feeling false feeling of dejavu or are we actually relying on the nostalgia effect? That’s literally Gohan’s SS2 up to the tie. DBS for me (and probably for some others, but I am not implying this fully, because I am not speaking for others behalf. You do you, I agree with your opinion and I respect it fully if you have a different one) feels just… dull. A dull transformation mess. It doesn’t rely on techniques, but more of relies on who’s power is greater. However, I do have a lot of love towards Moro and Granola arcs, due to how even if overpowered/overwhelmed, it doesn’t rely on any аss-pulls. It simply relies on characters techniques and on how they utilize them, even if the battle feels like it’s hopeless… Well, before our MacGuffin Mr. Black Freeza came into the scene into the Granola arc, to say the least.

Roshi and Shen staying as friends could mean 1 of two things. They either open a school together and combine their own teachings, or stay as more friendly rivals with their own school. The former could be more interesting. Roshi and Shen would likely have a total monopoly on the Martial Arts world with tons of people wanting to join their school. Goku, Krillin and Yamcha would have learned to fly a lot sooner if they did. I think Tien and Chiaotzu would join and all five of them would train together more often. This would make them all a lot stronger. Tien would still be competitive with Goku as self improvement seems to be ingrained in his character. The biggest change if they remained friends would probably be Tao who would be growing up under a good Shen instead of the asshole from the original series. He wouldn't become an enemy who ultimately kills Bora, forcing Goku to go on a journey to gather all the Dragon Balls, which means, he wouldn't go to Baba's to find the last one, wouldn't destroy the Red Ribbon base to find the remaining ones, so Gero wouldn't want revenge by creating the Androids.

@@mattymoyouknow202 I'm one of the newcomers. Watched all of DB, Z (skipped the garlic jr saga tho), Super (including the movies), and GT. Started last semester so I basically binged them b2b. Don't like to compare them, they all seem intended for different audiences, except GT to Z which felt like an extension with great villains and transformations but HORRIBLE filler.

I always found the period of King piccolo reign until his imprisonment to be fascinating period. It reminds me of the future trunks timeline.

Roshi/Shen would’ve had a Professor X/Magneto type friendship in my opinion

Well the biggest issue I have with the Roshi flashbacks is the chronological narrative. Isn't Roshi supposed to be hundreds of years old, or at the very least immortal, like his sister Fortune-Teller Baba? So how in the heck would Shen have been alive while Roshi appeared similarly youthful? Either they are both(and evidently Tao and Grandpa Gohan, for that matter) centuries old, OR for some unknown(and counter-intuitive) reason, the immortal Muten Roshi is apparently aging at a faster rate than any of his peers. Just seems odd imo. RIP Tori-bot!

I don’t see what the issue is. Them being both being around three centuries old doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility in Dragon Ball. Plus it’s not like Crane looks as young as Tao (who’s supposed to be his younger brother). He’s got clear wrinkles on his face and grey hair, albeit, a darker grey than Roshi’s. If anything Tao’s the weird one for looking like he’s in his 40’s or so, but would have to be near the same age as the two hermits.

I really wasn't expecting a video like this! I really love the dynamic that OG dragonball had with Roshi and the Crane Hermit. Rewatching Dragonball as a teenager recently made me really appreciate these characters and arcs more. Idk why I just really like Tao, Shen and the Crane School stuff, and ofc it's impact on Tien (our beloved role model) and Chiaotzu. I made fanart of Young Shen and Roshi and started a fanfiction about how they met and their training (haven't gotten far, and I doubt I'll continue since not a lot of people really care about Shen and Roshi's past)

I think they were meant to be business rivals. If they stayed friends it would have been a healthy rivalry not animosity. Especially after Shen finding out that M. Mutaito sacrificed himself, if he would have told Roshi "I need you because otherwise the death of our master can make me crazy." Roshi would have never turned his back on Shen.

There is such thing as friendly rivalries so I can see him still making the crane school and master roshi making the Turtles School Maybe his brother no longer becomes a mercenary but instead becomes a teacher of the army of the world and technically Tien on lost a few of his abilities when he learned with the crane School would actually be a lot stronger than he was in Cannon. So the school rivalry could still happen the only difference is that Tien is stronger in this version and will permanently stay stronger than his Canon counterpart.

Shen and Roshi staying friends and rivals would push eachother to be stronger and better, leading to a stronger group in the Z Fighters, possibly even being capable of handling Raditz down the line without losing Goku. However, I think that would end in a drawback as Goku would no longer have a reason to visit King Kai, and we'd have a loss at the end of the Saiyan saga. Nappa would be handled but Vegeta would win out. That's my thoughts.

There are a few problems for Master Roshi. 1, I understand Roshi can destroyed a small mountain, but a moon which is much bigger and much further than a small mountain is beyond ridiculous during the original DB series. 2, how can Master Roshi during the Tournament of Power is able to fight some of the best fighters in the 12 universes when he barely handle a group of the Frieza Force during the Resurrection F which took one year before the Tournament of Power?

If your looking for a in lore reason you really got to do a lot of mental gymnastics for anything in super to make sense. The actual reason is they wanted to tell certain stories regardless of how much or how little sense it made.

The problem with young Roshi is he looks like Yamcha in the anime, but looks like Tien in the manga.

I'll be honest, I was introduced to this series with DBZ with vegeta. And I liked it, then I went back and watched dragon ball and I loved dragon ball way more. And then when I went back to dbz, I felt like it was just missing something. I mean sure vegeta and piccolo are my favorite characters in the series. But two great characters isn't enough to make me like dbz and dbs more than og dragon ball.

I think they would have had a friendly rivalry, similar to the kais in the other world tournament

Where did the footage come from? I don’t remember anymore dlc coming out for kakarot. Also I think Tien has been done dirty. In DB he was a powerful character but as DBZ went on he became just another human. He clearly isn’t just another human, he can sprout another set or arms and has a third eye for crying out loud.

It's funny you made this video, I'd been thinking about it recently how old is master Roshi actually. Because I recall him being said to be over 300 years old, but if that's the case did Shen also drink the immorality drink? And how could he have Tao as his brother who's nowhere near as old? But maybe it was some dub filler and he wasn't that old in canon

Well if they were both good but you kept that they each made a school I could see The crane hermit school teaching techniques that are a little more underhanded like the solar flare for people who aren't that physical strong and Roshis school being more about for people who like to fight head on.

The old Turtle Hermit is an inherently good person, even with his perversion and the like. I honestly believe that if he and Shen remained friends, he may have been able to influence him and keep him from becoming what he was. Or maybe not. After all, just as there is inherent goodness in DB, there is inherent evil as well. Even with a different upbringing, I don't think Frieza would ever be a good, upstanding and moral person. But then again, we have Vegeta, who was evil but changed his ways. So maybe there would be hope for a Shen who wasn't an evil person had the Turtle Hermit remained his friend.

2 Perverted masters sounds great 🤣🤣🤣. Personally i think they would have still drifted apart myself, but would have stayed in contact. and instead of how Shen was basically a psycho they both just have two different martial arts and keep pushing each other to get stronger. Like dragon style, snake style. Different branches of martial arts. Maybe have competitions between the two schools and more members under each of them. I think it would make everyone stronger in OG dragonball. I Enjoyed the video.

only time Master Roshi is truely evil is during the Garlic Jr saga. Thing about it is if one becomes young the other has to as well in order to tell the story from Dragonball onwards. Otherwise they're just rivals. Shen is barely seen past Dragon Ball though. And if they stayed together the main thing is Roshi learns to fly and gets better ki stamina.

I love OG Dragon Ball but one thing still has me confused. I was watching the Subbed version on Hulu and Mai said she was 17. Then after OG Dragon Ball, especially in Super she is a child.

Im the total opposite of the kind of fan described at the beginning of this video. Being an old DragonBall fan, I dont really like what its evolved into. Also Goku and Krillin would learn Dondon ray. Dondon ray is better than Kamehameha according to master roshi. Meaning that goku might have taken out Piccolo with it or even matched Vegetas Galick gun without Kaioken.

I clicked thinking that we were going to see what the problem with roshi was and it ended up being about something completely different, doesn’t matter if the title is short or long, at least make it make sense for the video, just like many books have short or long titles that make sense. I know at the end of the day it isn’t that serious but I’m not wrong for pointing it out 🤷🏽‍♂️
