In my country (India), this film inspired two of our greatest directors (Satyajit Ray and Bimal Roy) to make movies that depicted life with unflinching realism. Bimal Roy made Do Bigha Zamin in 1953 and Satyajit Ray made Pather Panchali in 1955. Both these films are regarded as cult classics in the history of Indian cinema. It's really wonderful to see how The Bicycle Thief inspired so many legendary directors across so many nations and cultures.

One of the best acting performances ever depicted on film by Lamberto Maggiorani as the father Antonio. You felt his anguish and desperation.

This movie came out in 1948 and I have to say that it has to be the most if not the best portrayal of human tragedy and kindness and human emotions!!

I used to live near the Guild Theater in Menlo Park, CA. When it first opened in 1926, admission was just 25 cents! For its 75th anniversary, the Guild offered that same admission price and the film chosen to celebrate the occassion was "The Bicycle Thief." My wife and I saw it before, but never before in a theater - until that day. To see this masterpiece on the big screen is like seeing a classic painting up-close in a museum. I hope everyone can see it this same way.

The Bicycle Thief inspires one of the most profound vicarious empathy for the fragile human nature.

Yes, how we see you in moment of being the same victim we feared becoming ourselves reminds us to ask ourself suddenly, could I bear meeting with such a man',s confrontation had it been his bicycle -and face him -,if I stole from him??! Or : Could I go through this in public as being in this man's shoes, here is how they will all be onlooking, and watching his reactions. How does a man fare, in the course of this interaction? Are the people of our society able to console his anger and does empathy appear worth anything? Is one finding Justice? Or despair? Or outcry and comrades to express sentimentality and outrage and demand for Justice, let no one else do such.

Does he expand a widened searchful gaze towards the crowd and affect his best supernatural,faith enhanced appeal bestowing a call to confessions rallying potency of stirring out to fill the horizon, piercing every candidate suspect? Is he confident, powerless and wanted??? It's the moment of suspense shared, every struggling man can't take eyes off until he each can discern for a sign of hope, or at least test his own weather vane, at least I can see which way the wind blows on these dire matters, on the readout tapping for the great times of revealations, Epic and Biblically the question of the times as this day is so very hardened. What can be counted upon here? Who will be next and who is falling next?

Perhaps THIS WAS THOUGHT BACK ON IN REFERENCE FOLLOWING THE DEMISE AND HANGINGS OF MUSSOLINI AND HIS EVIL GANGS, TYRANTS MET WITH JUSTICE WHICH Was revered by the nation of working parents across Italy and Western world! Rejoiced! The bicycle such a wonder symbolic of human Independence and HOPE inspiring!

Technically it didn't win a Best Foreign Film Oscar. It won a "Best Foreign Film released in the U.S." honorary award. The BFF Oscar wasn't a real category yet.

I love this movie so much. Its so amazing and touching. Very Original Screenplay.

Citizen Kane was boring imo

chumbersdee it's not suppose to make you cry- take the film as it is. you are not suppose to walk away with some grand epiphany or religious experience. it is a great film, great cinema- don't judge a film by the tears in number.

@dogoMan2000 You'd have to see the film to understand. This is post-World War II Italy. Most people couldn't afford a car, let alone feed themselves. It's one of the saddest films I have ever seen. It really shows you what life was like then. Tragic.

@chumbersdee What btapianunez said. This isn't some film that plays with your emotions like a puppet. It's film that's supposed to open your eyes and show the reality of the world and that it's not always a happy ending. I actually didn't feel anything immediately after watching it, but after hours of reflection, I came to realize how great of a film this really was.

For those who have seen this movie i would also recommend to watch ''citizen kane'' and ''la strada''. They are great, believe me.

@favrailer Hopefully, if he is someone who will appreciate a movie like this. Most people today have to have a movie with lots of action and CGI. It reminds me of when I showed Citizen Kane to a group of friends. By the end, a couple of friends were already gone.

@68blues --- He steals out of desperation. He steals because in troubled times, even the well-meaning and even the good can do the unthinkable to support those who they love. And while I won't demand you to contradict your own beliefs, I feel we all should have sympathy for Ricci - he is merely a product of a situation that is out of his control. As for the bedsheets.. he sold his bike so that his family could eat. How was he to know that in the future, the bike would be necessary?

@68blues Well it's because the translation from Italian could be taken as both 'The bicycle thief' and 'The bicycle thieves', and when you think about it, both ways could be considered rather poetic. And while I agree that he isn't the most intelligent, and capable man - and while I certainly agree that he stole that bike in the end, I think you might be missing some of the points of the film. Ricci doesn't steal the bike out of malice, or because he is a bad person. ---

I'm definitely not immune to tears from a movie...notably the endings of A.I., Blue Velvet, and It's a Wonderful Life....but this film, while a great piece of cinema, didn't make me feel anything.

Hey I have a question for the lot of you, now.. It appears to me, that there is a bit of a discrepancy amongst critics and film-goers about the setting of Ladri di Biciclette.. I personally am of the camp that state this film is set in 1948, or at least post-world war II. Yet, it seems as though a lot of people disagree - they themselves believing the film is set during the great depression.. Can anybody give the definitive answer on this matter?

Yes and watch it in Italian with the English subtitles. On the dvd you could watch it with the English dub, but I didn't like it that way.

Is this movie "hard to follow"?? I usually make Wednesday and Sunday nights "movie nights" at my house, but since I have a 2 yr old and my grandma is 82 I only show movies that arent hard to follow, I heard good things about this movie but when I "screened" "Cinema Paradiso" for my grandma she kinda didnt get it, lol.

It's not. One of the exceptional things about this movie is the simplicity of the plot. The premise is almost not worth mentioning, but as the film goes on, you get more and more invested in the characters and in the end it has a great emotional impact.

Max Payne Ive actually seen it with my family since posting that and they liked it a lot, my grandma even got into this long story about how since her mom (my great grandmother) died in childbirth her father had to basically raise her as a boy (due to his ignorance/poverty) and the movie reminded her a lot of her childhood, thanks for answering though =]

Anyone who can watch this film without crying buckets had better check for a pulse. The very essence of Italian Neorealism, full of poor honest (and not so honest) people, squalid settings, heart-rending music, suffering children, dreams that never come true and the inescapable unhappy ending. One of my all-time favourites and a candidate for saddest movie ever.

It's one of greatest films ever made because it wastes not a single movement, or word, or shot. It's filmmaking at its most elemental, a haiku or a sonnet of visual storytelling. It's a visual story both realistic and heightened. And it's unlikely that anyone will ever be able to tell a story again with such raw simplicity because the tools have changed, and the fears have changed.

Does anyone agree with this?.......if the film is called the BicycleThief, fair enough, Antonio is looking for the person who stole his bike. Some say the movie is called The Bicycle THIEVES, I agree with the latter. Antonio steals the bike in the end. That is why there should be no sympathy for him. Come to think of it when the wife has to pawn the bedsheets so the husband can get a job he's got to be an absolute loser.

Replying to this, years apart .... I do agree that what Ricci did was absolutely wrong. But that's the beauty of this movie. It exposes the human nature, thirst for money. And even noblest of all men can turn thieves when nothing remains. ...time to watch it again I think...9 years apart
