I don't know if I'd go that far, but I tend to think of dragons as being one of the first things to crawl from the primordial chaos. They are living relics of the most bygone of ages. As such, their bodies are inundated with primeval magic, from when the world was new and all of creation was vibrant and alive. Magic suffuses every part of them. Their scales, teeth, and claws so magical they channel and resist the elements. Their breath is _certainly_ magical. As is their blood, which is so potent, it gives people sorcerous power when imbibed (and/or giving people the ability to understand the language of birds or whatever), and will cause new, draconic life to spontaneously generate from the soil where it was spilled. Where do you think the first kobolds, dragonborn, faerie dragons, drakes, wyverns, etc came from? Dragons were injured, and from their blood arose all the dragon-kin in the world. The bastard progeny of the rulers of monsters and the earth over which they fly.

I did some calculations on dragon travel for my campaign and i came up SIGNIFICANTLY higher then you guys did. curious what people think of my research and calculations. from what i understand the 80-90 miles per day, it is about half of the max travel distance(with the big assumption they will return to their lair every evening) so 80ft every six seconds(a turn) = 9mph times 24 hours = 216 miles you do bring up the need for resting even if you decide they need to rest for 1 hour for each 3 hours of travel, with the 9 mph speed they get the about 72miles you give. however, looking at real-world air travel of animals that doesn't really make sense. if you calculate their combat movement speed they get 9 mph, but that is slower then the average airspeed of almost all birds, with the lowest being 5mph being the slowest a bird can fly without crashing(mating ritual for an american woodcock) I used a goose as a travel comparison point, a goose travels at 40 miles PER HOUR average, with up to 70 mph. in good wind geese have been known to travel upwards of 1500 miles in a day in ideal conditions. note other birds cruise on average at 20-30 mph, but geese travel at the high altitudes that dragons do. even a hummingbird can get up to 60 mph, and cover over 500 mph per day. I decided that because of the size of the dragon they cannot move as fast as a goose, but to maintain flight they can't be moving that much slower. (more mass means stalling limit is higher) So I eyeballed it and gave them the low end of average bird cruising speed, 20 mph, with the benefits of high altitude flying. To me going any slower would be them hovering rather than sustained flying. Also if you imagine a goose flying overhead, it makes sense a Dragon can fly at about half that speed. even if you decide they need to rest for 1 hour for each 3 hours of travel, with the 20 mph they get 360, but in my view of traveling for 24 hours they travel 480 miles per day, and that was the lowest speed that made sense to me. here are my assumptions 1st: with dragons super hi CON, it makes sense to me that they have incredible endurance even in unfavorable wind and conditions, I argue dragons can go days without sleeping, but as a result can sleep away weeks and even years if they feel so inclined. 2nd: they are on the low end of Bird cruising speed. 3rd to explain the difference in combat speed, is because to remain maneuverable the dragon can only get 80 ft of movement(9mph) but on long stretches get up to the travel speed of 20 mph to me combat movement speeds shouldn't be used to calculate travel movement speeds. but then this is D&D and not everyone wants the same realism I do, and the 9mph is the only speed the monster manual gives us. for those curious, I calculated this for my group because they needed to escape a Red dragon that murdered their mentors and wanted to know how far they needed to get before it would be guaranteed they were out of his territory. I did this for the fun of it and wanted to share what I found, and see what everyone thinks!

Aaron thank you for your time, that as a fun read. Birds and bats eat up to nearly five times their body weight each day to maintain daily flight. Also birds only fly hen they need to, or have a good thermal up drift ti circle in. Also bats will hit a fruit tree and eat till they are to heavy to fly. Larger the dragon the more it needs to fuel it's self for flight. Good new, gators and crocs are like bears, then can go for weeks or months without food. Once it's fat reserves are built up.

@@krispalermo8133 great point about feeding, yeah it makes a ton on sense a dragon would store energy. It is logical that if well fed before they could likely go days of travel on stored food. Again a reflection of their crazy high Con stats, and as you say, their lizard biology.

I just finished reading "The Bounds of Reason," which is a Witcher story in _The Sword of Destiny_ featuring a dragon hunt. What I thought was cool about that is that it's almost a communal thing with the king bringing several parties of dragon slayers, as well as attendants and so one. This creates a great situation for intrigue as everyone is competing for the lion's share of the dragon's hoard, as well as having various ulterior motives for being there. I really like the idea of running that scenario where everyone has a secret win condition, maybe in addition to trying to get the dragon's hoard (in the story, one character was actually a conservationist trying to rescue the dragon, one was in the pocket of the gem-cutter's guild and was trying to keep the dragon's gems from flooding the market, etc.).

On dragons in Dungeons: it's not actually all that weird when you remember that many dragons (if not all) are also spellcasters and could almost certainly change their form to just WALK out of the dungeon. Or, perhaps when they are about to be beaten, they pose as a slave or prisoner of some kind and are "rescued" by the party

The best way to use dragons is outdoors where they have room to fly . They do not play fair. They play to win. Not even the lair actions and some lesser creatures being involved in the combat underground makes up tor keeping the dragon from flying. It will soar and drop rocks and circle out of range until its breath recharges for another pass. Breathe, grab a PC, soar up a LONG way and drop them.

I’ve got two ancient dragons, one chromatic and the other metallic, that have essentially figured out how to work the same angle in the world. They both founded and operate adventuring guilds. The Ancient Silver Dragon started an adventuring guild to gather brave heroes and warriors to protect the realm from would be BBEGs and run monster control for the general benefit of the masses. Meanwhile the Ancient Red Dragon was watching this all go down and realized that these tomb raiding, dungeon busting adventurers were uncovering *a lot* of shiny hidden treasure. So he started his own adventuring guild for the sole purpose of gathering treasure hunters and taking the lion’s share of their loot. I’ve run several campaigns through this setting, and my players always love these two. It’s worked out great.

It looked at us, a party of adventurers, we looked at it, a dragon, and there was a moment of us all going "AH!" and then we fought without a word. Afterwards we thought "I guess we could have spoken to it?" but in the heat of the moment it was just pure instinctual combat

In my campaign world, there's a region of the map that surrounds a giant tower, built and inhabited by dragonborn. They made a pact with a black dragon that keeps the lands around the tower barren, by spraying the swamp lands with acid at night, corroding trees and killing off plant life that could conceal an approaching force. In return, they feed the dragon and keep it entertained by giving it prisoners to torture. The tribal folk living in the swamp call the dragon "The Night", cause it never comes out during the day and they've actually never seen it. "Travel without fire or The Night will get you." "Don't step into morning puddles." "Don't drink un-cleansed water." "Don't bathe in un-cleansed water." Their lives have always been that way and the adapted around it, but they still live in fear of this dragons influence.

I had a town that was in the shade of a ring of giant mushrooms. In the clouds above the mushrooms was a silver dragon's castle of clouds. In the ground beneath the mushrooms was a colony of myconids. The myconids made use of the dragon's fertilizer, which is what grew the giant mushrooms, and the dragon made use of the town because she loved people. They all lived in harmony. Except for the pesky hag in the nearby swamp, of course.

To be honest, looking at iconic creatures like dragons there is just so much you can do with them, to use another example me and a friend had a long conversation of the amount of stuff you could do with a Medusa, so I definitely agree the iconic creatures of DND have plenty more to give especally if you use them in new and creative ways.

That was a fantastic intro! Also a great inspiration for a campaign. Two dragons are in love, protect the country side from their over the top and powerful displays of love lol. I love integrating dragons into the lore of my world. I had a northern town believe that white dragons brought winter with them as they migrated south with the herds. I also like the idea of dragons as quest givers as much as antagonists (even evil dragons). All the hunting stuff I kind of want to integrate into my games somehow. I liked all of it

Blue dragon fighting strategy, at half health turn it into a giant game of wack a mole! Under sand recharging it's breath till surprise lightning! Give your players one round to try and hit him before back to full cover recharging, and this can turn a lower cr dragon into a great challenge for higher level parties! Also always check for a line when going under.

nice. I do miss these points though: * Subduing. You don't have to kill a dragon to get what you want from it. Also, you might want to tame smaller specimens. * Dragon personalities This is an important subject in my mind. Each dragon type is different and unique, and so are each dragon individual too. Its important to flesh dragons out for some quality roleplay. I think its great to practise interesting dragon conversations. A party might slay a dragon, just to learn that they might never find that special something they were looking for in the hoard. By persuasion, seduction or helping out the dragon, it might choose to help the players with what they really want. A special item from its hoard, a piece of important knowledge, a clue or something. What use is a dead dragon anyway? * Benevolent dragons Quite many dragons are benevolent creatures. They might be annoying, tricksters or hard to decipher or build trust with, but far from all dragons are evil tyrannic destroyers begging to be countered in battle. * Transformations You touch this subject briefly, but I find it a very important aspect of dragons altogether. With transformations, dragons can interact with the world in many ways. And they certainly do!

DRAGONS & MURDER HOBOS 20 some years ago I started going to my first RPG game shop, and I met murder hobos player groups. This was still in the days of AD&D2e and dragon fights were a whole different game. It ran an Open Campaign Setting where different player groups could compete against each other for good nature sport. Sadly one group got kick out cause these murder hobos killed a 9 year old kid's gnome and copper dragon mount. At the time the shop had " Council of the Wrym " box set campaign setting. So some of us ran dragon pc. Some nights all our dragon characters did was run from M.H. adventures try to kill us for XP and our hides. M.H. were use to their DM letting them just kill the monsters/ dragons for sport and these 20 some year old Adults were whining that we were cheating cause they were unable to kill our dragon characters. a.) We treated our dragons as teenagers just out of the house/ lair, and we were trying to have as much fun and trouble we could find. Wild hatchling are just over size eight year olds without parents telling them what to do. i.) Dragons are like " dogs," they Love human cooked food. And all children need hugs, even when they say they don't. So red dragons or black dragons are usually capture/ charm or con into behaving to human standers for cooked season food and have daily petting/ blanket rub down. ii.) Marsh/ wet land black or dragon dragons will try to kill another dragon breed to their " Area." Like any other wolf pack would. Plot device, take in a baby red and have the local green/ black try to kill it. Or the local noble tries to claim the beast as a " threat " to the local farming. b.) Green dragons as young adults will still move in groups of two to five with their siblings for protection from larger dragons, and humanoids. Greens are a gang of strait up muggers . AD&D2e red dragons left their parents lair by age juvenile or they are thrown out. A juvenile dragon is around 20 years old but by human standers, they just turn 12 to 13 years old. Red dragons are rowdy teenagers. i.) Reds never attack a target with their breath weapon unless they really Have to. Fire can destroy value treasure they don't want to lose. So they will stalk their target for days or weeks. ii.) Juvenile and young adult dragons will just " cat nap " in a open local grazing field to provoke a challage or try to lord over a small village till the baron's men show up to run it off. Also as any teenager that has just got out of the house with no curfew , they want to see and get into Everything. !
