Especially because poop is really just our body pretty much composting what is left over from our food. Dirt is actually similar to poop, it's plant poop which is just basically fine particles of dead plants and other things. Poop makes the world go round whether we like it or not. Some mushrooms literally grow in poop (which is why I always cut off the stem).

Right! Normal human bodily functions should be discussed and treated as such. We all fart, we all poop, we all pee, a lot of us get hemorrhoids (especially women after childbirth). We all get streaks on our undies now and then. It's all a part of being human and should be treated a such.

My guy, did you miss the points where he talked about : the anus is 1.5in long with crevasses in which soft poop will get, friction which will get left off poop to go down no matter what, not scrubbing deep to not hurt and avoid harming it ? In that matter i guess the two solutions are equivalent, in the end morality is : you'll have a dirty a-hole no matter what, so chill and stop overthinking it, that's why underwear are for.

Just want to say, thanks for the info doc! I just want to say to all the people watching this man, LISTEN TO HIM. I had a hemorrhoidectomy about a year ago. I have had broken bones, got a piece of metal stuck in my thigh, I used to lance my own subepidermal cycts and I have never experienced so much pain in all my life. I will do ANYTHING to not go through that again. And its not even the surgery itself. I got home and I hurt, sure. But then I had to poop. I almost passed out. Thank baby Jesus for Sitz baths and epsom salts. This happened for 2 weeks where I would see stars when I pooped. Grown ass man crying because I had to poop. So when this this man tells y'all do this or don't do this to avoid hemorrhoids LISTEN TO HIM.

I have a very hairy bottom, so toilet paper alone is a nightmare. I've been using a handheld shower head for 20+ years and it's life changing. You can also get a portable bidet when you're on the go. The hand shower or bidet basically eliminates friction which eliminates many issues that can come up in that area. Also, I somehow seemed to have trained my body to go in the morning before I shower which is a massive help.

Hey, if you can't talk to your doctor about hemorrhoids, get a new doctor. I'm so lucky to have a doctor that I can talk to about everything, no matter how embarrassing. I once mentioned to him that I had hemorrhoids and he immediately jumped in with, "yeah, I got 'em too", that just made the topic so much more relatable. I mentioned to him my growing bald spot and he immediately pointed to his own and said "yeah, welcome to the club!". We had a good laugh as he related his experiences with Minoxidil, etc. So get a new doctor you feel comfortable with and can relate to.

I wish that I had watched this video as a child - I used to obsessively wipe and consequently damage my butt and began to avoid using the restroom outside of my house because I would get super stressed out about getting it clean. Sometimes I would also clog toilets because of how much toilet paper I was using to try to get all the way clean, and if anyone knows that one Parks & Rec clip about wiping your butt feeling like wiping a marker, where it just keeps going and going, that clip is so relatable. Nowadays I have a bidet and am able to get it spotless in one pass, but I have felt what you describe here - the discomfort and itchiness after wiping - after using public restrooms. I’m very glad to have watched this!

Skid marks are disgusting and totally avoidable. After initial wiping, move over and sit on your sink or the edge of the bathtub, and reach back to wash your butthole under a stream of running water. Work a finger inside your starfish up to the first knuckle until the "greasy" feeling is gone. I've been wiping this way for over 20 years and never had a skidmark since. Obviously this isn't always practical away from home. I usually take some moistened paper towels into the stall if I have to use a public toilet. Also beware of weight limits for sinks.

I totally appreciate your candor. It's not shameful or dirty - it's just biological functioning! Most were only taught toileting hygiene briefly as little children. When we are young our bm is a certain consistency, our musculature is young and strong and we don't have body hair in those areas. While we might learn about puberty no one really readdresses the subject of BM hygiene and most people aren't going to ask. I think too, we have to adapt our hygiene as we age. Pregnancy, muscle laxity, injuries all change how that area is functioning and changing shape. Now factor in the differences of the diet. If you eat something greasy, your poop is going to be greasy and smeary and sticky to clean up. It's all just a part of living.

My career as a geologist has taken me to every continent except Antarctica. Very early on, I realized that there were two types of people in the world, those who loved bidet showers, aka ‘bum guns’ (small hose-mounted showers operated by a trigger fitted next to the toilet), and those who had never tried them. Why the West hasn’t adopted these simple devices is beyond my comprehension. The water jet cleans you perfectly, and the lightly dabbed the toilet paper dries you off. No need for the ‘technique’ that you describe in the video, Doc. Perfect cleanliness each time.

This works with my morning schedule so fortunately I can use my own bathroom. I think that merely wiping is not really being clean. But great advice here for people who still do that. I can't imagine running around doing my daily activities with a poo-smeared rear-end though.

Mine for example, every time i went to bathroom and I would dig for gold trying to make it where i wouldn’t need to go wipe later a few hours…I was causing bleeding to happen. Then I would pray to get constipated so that way I wouldn’t have to deal with the mess. I have had multiple hemorrhoids over the years, and currently still have 2 internal ones (that i know of). Great topic! Hygiene is always very personal and differs from person to person based on their preferences, and body to body. Yes, you wipe until you don’t see any more fecal matter on the tissue… but that is not the end of the story, or the wiping for that matter, and here is why. As the doctor said, if you are pooping dry, those are pretty much a one-and-done, granted. However, if your poop is tarry, mushy, runny, and not solid, not only are you going to wipe immediately after, you should check and wipe multiple times afterward, at about one-hour intervals. The exception is diarrhea because in this type of involuntary discharge, your body is forcibly expelling as much as it can via your colon and much of it is being carried and cleansed via water. Hence, you might have noticed during this temporary condition, you’re toilet paper reading or indicator is clean with the first wipe following a case of diarrhea. The body’s natural enema. Most times, although you initially wiped the anus clean, usually there is more stuck inside the rectum waiting to be expelled, which it does through capillary actions of the colon and rectum on their own, but also helped by normal body movements following your bowel movement, and gravity as the doctor indicated. With these two combined actions, you are more so than not, going to have additional poop to wipe clean. So, to ensure that you get it all, and not have the remaining remnants of your stool wind up on your underwear, you should wipe again about an hour later, and while the stool is still moist. At that hour mark, if there are no remnants, then you are good to go for the rest of your day, normally. And, of course, as the doctor indicated, some people’s anus’ are very sensitive to wiping with toilet paper that irritates their anus, so with these sensitive folks, try using moist wipes to reduce the friction. Again, great subject, doc! 😊

Hey Fred, that sure is some rant you got going on there. But I have to point out that you’re totally wrong about the way our body excretes waste and evacuates the bowel. There is absolutely ZERO capillary action occurring, for several reasons. 😱Most obvious is that faecel matter isn’t anywhere near liquid enough, nor is the viscosity low enough to allow for capillary action to occur, unless you’re essentially pissing out of your arse. 🤯 The colon and bowels work primarily via peristalsis and air pressure. 🤨Think of shit kind of like semi-congealed blood; once blood has started to congeal and lumps/solid bits have started to form, this blood will no longer be able to use capillary action 😂🎉🎉 there isn’t a complete seal. The liquid must seal with the capillary or the process doesn’t happen. It’s like saying that vomit could somehow use capillary action when there’s no possibility for anything remotely solid and/or chunky to use capillary action. This is the same as what happens when one evacuates their bowel, unless they completely liquid faecal matter. 💩

Good job, doctor. It's too bad we live in a society where you're expected to pretend not to have a body that has necessary functions, including elimination. Look at the lack of public restrooms across the US... Good down-to-earth advice in this video and I'm glad you made it.

I am very happy to have found an expert to talk about this area and to clarify issues that made me feel guilty. Society has made us feel that skid marks shows that a person does not take proper care. But I noticed that sometimes depending on the texture one cannot avoid skid marks. After this video I now understand the issue and my butt. Thank you doctor.

Thank you, doctor! I just want to support you. Yes, it's embarrassing to talk about this, because the topic is very intimate, but it's our HEALTH! Also, I think that people who watch this video are mature enough not to giggle.

Ok Dude you are funny to the point and explain a lot of things that nobody talks about. I am 68 now and for years I have had all the above mentioned conditions. You explained and answered a lot I didn't know. Fishers where the worst and I would wipe with wet tissue paper as not knowing what to do. Fishers healed, hemorrhoids seemed to be healed. Thanks for the info, great job.

Saw the title and JUST HAD to check it out haha I'm 50 so after all these years of wiping my own booty, I can't imagine changing my style to what you described. I wipe both ways. If you only wipe downward, you're pushing it down to the "taint" area. So you must wipe upward too, to get that lower area clean. Thankfully my daily poops are like clockwork - after 2 cups of coffee. I poop, go downstairs and workout and then take another poop, and jump in the shower before work. And in the shower with soap and water, I clean the whole crack and bootyhole area. I'm clean as a whistle down there .... as long I don't have to poop a 3rd time (after shower), which is what happened once I got into work this morning. Not clean as a whistle anymore. UGH. I hate that. Anyway, thank you for keeping it real & keeping it funny, Dr. Chung!

Honestly when it comes to cleanliness, there is no worse feeling than a dirty booty. Honestly I can get paint on myself or covered in mud all day. It still feels better than getting skid marks. Thankfully I don't need the toilet often, though I also don't eat often. I much prefer drinks, and I can get all my energy, vitamins and minerals from a single meal.

Thanks doc. This way is a winner. 1: fold 5 pieces of TP. I fold 2-ply 3 layers thick. 2: slightly dampen half of two of them (just wet fingertips with water and tap until slightly damp). Fold again to double the strength of the dampened wipes. You’ll figure out after a couple tries exactly how much to dampen. 3) Use two of the dry wipes to get the big stuff. 4) use the two dampened wipes to really clean the area 5) use the last dry wipe for final pass to clean/dry. Normal poop messes will be totally clean. You feel so ‘clean’ with this method. You also don’t have to buy wet wipes. It’s so strange how everyone uses dry TP. You would never do gardening work, wipe your dirty hands with some dry tissue paper and feel that’s good enough! Why do we think it’s fine to wipe our butts that way?

I have more bulk than you, so unfortunately I end up using a whole roll, sometimes 2 or more if it's very messy. I fold them the same way you do. Once most of it is gone, I use wet wipes until I don't see any brown stain on the wipes. Then I wash my hands with soap, dry them, use a wipe to clean around my buttocks just in case, and use one last wipe on my booty hole just in case (and yes there's been a stain in the just in case situation, in which case I would continue wiping until there's no stain). Then when I'm clean, I use toilet paper to dry and I'm good to go. Oftentimes I like to have a shower, especially in summer when all that moving around makes you sweaty.

Interesting topic. No skid marks for me. I was grew up in Italy, so after wiping I learned to wash my rear with a bidet. Now in the USA, I use a short bucket on a stool as a bidet. Or I go number 2 before taking a shower. Last time I had underwear with a skid mark was in my childhood. In Italy by building code bathrooms must have a bidet.

I know it's embarrassing, I know it's uncomfortable, I know it's funny, but it is good to hear all of this coming from a Proctologist. Maybe some people were taught the wrong way or come may be under wiping or some over wiping. Now we all know the right way to wipe. Dry poops though area cleaner for wiping are unhealthy poops. The messy wipings are healthy poops. Glad I'm on the healthy side. Keep up the great with the great info.
