    Use an angle grinder with a crimped wire cup brush (Harbor Freight $5) to remove the gunk. Use a mild abrasive felt pad at 320 grit for satin finish, and a wool felt pad with metal polish to get a mirror shine. Bosch Angle Grinder 5" is my favorite.

    What a great tool, i am a simple man I start with bar keepers friend, removes thin scratches and polishes surface (makes SS cooking pans have a mirror like finish) if scratch was too deep and didn’t come out i next use bar keepers friend with 0000 steel wool, if still there take some wet-sand paper on a flat block followed by bar keepers friend and that typically does the job for far far less money. Get any angle grinder. Add a rubber pad accessory to buff flat, or get the wool pad discs. The issue with a steel or aluminum exterior is the constant polishing. I'd spray it with some poly or lacquer to keep the shine. The Fein rollers are of course the best thing since they go with the grain and not in a circular orbital direction, so fewer passes are needed. If you can afford them.

    what is your advice on the stainless steel sink?

  • @FEINCanada

    @FEINCanada

    2 ай бұрын

    If it's for your stainless sink at home, for light scratches, I would suggest use a fine abrasive pad, such as a Scotch-Brite pad, to gently buff the area. Again, make sure to work in the direction of the grain. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure, as this can create more scratches. If the scratches are deep, you may need to seek professional help. Always test any cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't cause further damage.

    Hello, I am a car detailer and yesterday I encountered something I had no way to fix. My client has a Rolls Royce Phantom and the hood and area around the windshield are bare stainless steel. The hood is heavilly scratched and the stainless steel has a very prominent "grain" texture going from the windshield to the front. What would you recommend to fix that? I am sure I could remove the scratches using wet sanding but I know the texture will be removed.

    Try 0000 steel wool. Start dry with very little pressure. Add pressure very carefully and slowly and evenly, following the grain. If it does not produce the finish you like, try same process using a very light coat of WD40 (spray on rag and rub on). Good luck.

  • @FEINCanada

    @FEINCanada

    Жыл бұрын

    I would not use steel wool on stainless steel because this add contaminants to the stainless who cause rust spots to forms in few weeks/months. The first thing to do is determine what the grain finish it match and how deep the scratches are. The deeper the scratches are the coarser you will have to go. This also add more steps to the process. Same for the final grain, finer is it more steps you need to have.

    I just recently purchased 60 - 4x8 sheets of stainless steel from a restaurant that went out of business. 600.00 not bad! My plan is to use it to wrap five ugly enclosed trailers that are now just 1/2" plywood...and a bunch of smaller projects like building trailer tongue boxes etc... what grit should I sand those to for exterior use? Should I polish them to a mirror finish or will I just blind everyone?

  • @FEINCanada

    @FEINCanada

    Жыл бұрын

    The grit number depend of what look you like. Usually what is used in restaurants is a grit around 120-180. To go mirror it's a lot of steps and a lot of time. Still If you go that path afterwards you have to be very careful because it is so easy to scratch.

    There is multiple ways to achieve a finish, using compound is a different and older technique. In our case we use compound for mirror preparation and finishing only we find it faster because you remove the wheel preparation and less messy. For a number #4 finish and even for finer polishing drums will do a great job.

    The dust thrown off in these processes may not be too visible, but it is hazardous to your health in the long term. You may not bother all that much in the short term, but if you are going to spend the level of money for the stuff here that means a lot of work over the long term. So it makes sense to protect your lungs. Myself, I would be using a leather apron as well. Kind of hard to get all that stuff out of it afterwards.

    I could still see the difference between polished area and the rest - I would not accept that as the good result.

    You're the one who damaged it. Maybe be more careful next time and he won't have to bother with you. The only way to get it perfect is to avoid SCRATCHING IT. I can only imagine how awful you are as a client.

    There is no way to have the polished surface identical to the rest. A trained eye can always see the difference. The only way to make it perfectly identical is by refinishing the sheet on the same machine with the same abrasive and parameters that the factory used to polish it in the first place. Most of the time, this is not possible. In that case, we can blend the scratch pattern with power tools, like in this video, or hand tools to minimize the difference between the two finishes

    I don’t know what a “number four finish” is. Are you assuming that any and all who would find this video interesting are only those who would be insulted by defining this term, as you consider it so universally understood? If you did, you are mistaken, and you risk neglecting a possibly good sized body of potential customers with money to spend, and social networks within which to share product experiences, both good and bad. SOME of us low-lifes watch videos such as this in order to learn more about a subject, NOT to be excluded by proprietary terminology, “code” as it were, limiting the audience to those who already possess a certain level of knowledge and experience; those who “speak the language”, as they say. Some will have their videos “proofed” by someone interested, but less knowledgeable; specifically, let’s say ‘hobbyist’ level of interest, but no more than a layman’s knowledge, just to minimize such omissions. If, however, you just forgot to mention it, my apologies, everyone experiences the occasional imperfection - otherwise, great video, well-presented and demonstrated, fascinating product line.

    Thank you, we appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration. A number four finish is a consistent linear finish on stainless steel usually from grit 120 to 180 like what we see on a stainless sink or fridge.
