The BEST Upgrade for Any Woodshop - Vacuum Arm

#woodworking #woodprojects #woodshop #dustcollector
Focusing on your project, your power tools, and the task at hand while also dealing with power cords ands vacuum hoses can be a real chore inside any woodshop. It can cause multiple problems while you're trying to simply work. Today I will be designing and building a custom, dual-action shop accessory arm to help with the management of my vacuum hose. This is a great addition to any small woodshop and I encourage you to truly think about adding this feature to your own shop. You can easily add in additional features like an overhead extension cord. These features will add a tremendous amount of versatility to the use of routers, sanders, and many other tools with built in vacuum ports for duct collection.
I'd like to throw out a huge THANK YOU to Jon, over at Lincoln Street Woodworks for his original video, his design, and the inspiration he gave me to complete this project. I have his links listed below. Please take some extra time to go check out his channel.
I hope that you enjoy today's video and if you have any questions or additional thoughts, please feel to leave them in the comments section below.

In my plan to imitate this great idea, I will be using 4" sewer pipe for the beam and I will be including the authours extension cord idea as well as a compressed air line. Thank-you for the inspiration.

What I missed seeing here is a real before/after, with your boom arm in action. That is, "This is the problem I had before this... [cue footage]," and, "This is what I'm able to do now [cue really cool footage]." I see that this vid is 8 mos. old, too. How would you rate your own construction now after the fact? What would you change? How do you see this functionality evolving in the future?

I wondered why you didn't use a smooth bore tube along the arm as this would significantly reduce vacuum losses, with just a short piece of flexi at the bends? Otherwise, nice bit of kit; will be making my own version soon!

Sorry for the delay. I'm glad that you mentioned that. As of right now, I am very unhappy with the performance of that orange rigid hose. I'm gonna have to create a better solution. Thank you for watching

I love Jon's channel and am going to follow you as well. The modification for a center pivot point is just what I need for my shop. What about using a longer hinge, such as used on a privacy fence gate to get a stable pivot point that spreads out the weight? Just an idea.

Funny that you mention that. I was originally going to use a longer style hinge, but the big orange store had none in stock. I'm liking the additional center hinge modification and I think that you may find it usual. Thanks for commenting. Glad you enjoyed.

Nice modifications for your shop from John’s design. DownUnderWoodWorks and Woodshop Junkies both did a camera articulating arm for their cameras….different applications but maybe a project for the future??

Thank you for the kind words. I have seen the video you are referring to. It was a great idea. I may have to look into doing something like that. It would really help with the needed camera angles.

It's a boom for holding up a hose. Doesn't exactly seem like it could be any more complicated than you'd want it to be.
