This video shows clearly what effective packing looks like. If you don't have packing cubes, here's what I have been using for years now without any issues. I keep ALL the plastic packaging from the pillow cases, sheet sets etc. Anything that I purchase that I can re-use. I will then use one for my personal care items, the pillow case one for feminine products, the sheet set one for outfits. This way, they all fit into the suitcase and none of my clothes gets dirty. Also just in case of spillage, my clothes are protected. For shoes, I use the bags my handbags come in or any such soft bags. Reuse and recycle until you can get to the aesthetically pleasing stuff, especially if money is an issue and you can't afford this stuff. Then when possible, upgrade to your hearts content. Looks so neat! I dont have a suitcase that zips open on both sides like this, just one huge cubby hole...a little harder to pack when you have to think about the layers.

You can use free umbrella bags to achieve much of what you are using packing cubes for. Really convenient for dirty clothes when you return home. You can trim the bags to suit luggage dimensions. More durable bags are in museums, or wherever you might have to walk around a building for an extended period of time.

And that's my problem with packing cubes. You need to squish the clothes so it can fit in the cube, but when you take it out It's all wrinkled. And no a portable iron doesn't feel like something i would pack for a trip.

Of course, anything can wrinkle items if left too long. So I take my clothes out right away at the hotel. Or use the steamer /iron on the delicate ones if needed! especially when you pack them tightly. Have a fantastic trip!

it does in fact, make more space too!! because its compression, you can fit a LOT more into them and smush them down than regular stacking of clothes. But also great for organization and keeping your bag clean!
