I’ve had a Dockers carry on for 10 years. In my opinion you don’t need a specific bag with fancy or expensive features. Get packing cubes, edit your items, plan your outfits and then remove some items.

My experience demonstrates the other side of that. A friend passed along a decent piece of luggage. After using it on one trip, I understand why she didn't want it. But it was absolutely her generous gesture that was important. I was relieved she never asked about it. Perhaps she didn't want to see me tell a white lie about it, LOL. It's fine for road trips, just not good for air travel.

I have learned over the years to place a packing list in my actual travel bag. I edit it after each trip. No matter how little I pack, I never use everything. However, I get closer to my goal of minimalism each time.

I recently went on a 3-week trip and the best decision for me was to pack a piece of solid laundry soap. Really easy to give socks, undies and even t-shirts a quick wash in the bathroom sink, find somewhere in the bathroom (e.g. towel rack) to hang them and you're good to go. If you do it every day (i.e., don't let them pile up), it literally takes 5-10 minutes.

I did carry-on for an 11 day trip to London (UK, not Ontario) this summer and it was the best. I felt so much "lighter" and loved having less to choose from for outfits (which was the complete opposite to how I thought I'd feel). I'm a carry-on convert for life now!

I kept it very simple and thought we’d need to do laundry partway through but it wasn’t necessary! I took sneakers and Birkenstocks (I am no fashionista) and really basic, interchangeable pieces - tshirts, a couple of button downs, two pairs of shorts, a pairs of jeans and one pair of cotton pants, two dresses. It totally worked for me. When we got home I made a list of what worked and what didn’t (including things I never used). I’m planning another trip in a few weeks and those lists are coming in handy! I also didn’t bring a lot of toiletries, which worked out great. I’m a convert to the carry on!

✈️ Never heard of the 5-4-3-2-1 method before, so this was really educational for me! I‘m plus size, so a carry on is really challenging to pack for me but somehow I never thought of taking advantage of laundromats or laundry machines in places to stay, so I pack one outfit for each day of the stay. A friend of mine did though recently and it blew my mind 😂 He went on an overseas trip with 5 tops (button downs and sweaters/t-shirts), 2 pairs of trousers and a jacket, since they had a connecting domestic flight where luggage was weight-limited. I never imagined that could work, but he also used a laundry machine in one of their accommodations (plus a laundromat somewhere else) to travel for more than two weeks!

I’m so excited you found out about this!! I always bring a bar of laundry soap and a little stain remover so I can hand wash things if I don’t have access to a washing machine or if I just want to wash one thing! It’s not everyone’s priority but for me it’s that one extra I wouldn’t want to travel without. Finding somewhere to dry things has only been an issue once but I made a makeshift washing line of sorts so I don’t worry about that part. And if there is a laundry available it’s still perfect for a little spot clean!! Even if it’s not your cup of tea I’d still suggest doing laundry on holiday to anyone, it saves so much space and I swear it’s less effort than packing and carrying around extra clothes. Usually laundry’s just a chore for me but on holiday I find it a nice quiet moment :) I always wish I could hear more packing tips from plus size people! I’d been the same size for ages until I went up a few sizes recently. It didn’t seem significant but I had to completely change how I pack!! I always thought it must be more difficult for plus size people but that really put it in perspective. It honestly made me so curious about how other people approach packing based off all kinds of different circumstances!! Even little things can completely change how you pack, it’s so personal

I travel carry on as a plus sized woman and have for years. I pack enough socks and underwear for the trip, 2-pairs of shoes plus on my feet - stuffable jacket and long raincoat are both Columbia brand, 2-4 pairs of pants or capris, a couple of tank tops, 3 tshirts, 2 long sleeve, 1 micro fleece or merino wool zip up, couple of dresses. My wardrobe is a lot of quick dry and I wash and hang in the room or send out for laundry service depending on the country I’m in This January for Mexico will be 2 linen pants, 2 dresses, tank tops, 1 long sleeve, bathing suits, and a light cardigan. I normally travel in leggings and a long shirt with the cardigan on me. I use 3 packing cubes and a VERY small toiletry kit

✈Really enjoyed the video. A similar method I follow is 3-2-1...3 tops-2 bottoms-1 dress. I try to coordinate with one pair of shoes (2 if beach). I have everything able to mix and match. Laundry along the way really makes a big difference. I pack solid sheet laundry soap which takes up nearly zero space and I don't have to worry about using unfamiliar products on my skin that can become sensitive at the worst times.

My go to packing list has essentially become 3 simple and tasteful, blank t-shirts (wear one on the plane), black jeans (also wear on the plane) and one pair of comfortable trousers in reserve, one pair comfortable boots that I wear daily, a destination appropriate jacket for the weather, and then personal care items and electronics. Leaves room in my carry on for buying a few things to bring back. This isn't for everyone, but if you can manage it I can attest it is very freeing. Add a scarf and you double your potential daily outfit options.

I never tire of these types of videos! I was an over packer for years and challenged to a carry on only a year ago. I watched a ton of videos and I took a soft side Swiss Army with packing cubes and a backpack to Nicaragua. Since it was a mission trip, I left clothes there and brought a few things home. Never going back to the huge checked bag! I traveled once by plane this year and used a hard sided Delsey with compression cubes and a backpack and had clothes leftover so I can still pack less. We travel mostly with our RV and I am packing less. More to unpack when I get home. We also have a w/d in our RV. What I did on our last trip was thrift! Forget something, don't want to pack a lot, don't want to spend a lot of money, find a thrift store. Possibly flying 3 times in 2024; twice to the Northeast and to Africa. There will be RV trips as well. Packing light is definitely the way to go. I use contact lens cases for moisturizers and foundation. I have stick lotion and sunscreen. I use bar soap for body and face. Makeup is a compact kit with everything in it.

We were fortunate to have laundry facilities in each rental home. I did a lot of planning to bring clothes suited for our activities. I love using travel cubes. I still brought too many clothes. We had a great trip without any issues as far as clothes. My suitcase wheels shredded before we made it into the terminal to leave Detroit. Don't skimp on inexpensive carry-ons. We did have our purchases shipped back to the USA by the Irish merchants. They were happy to ship for free. You have to get a wool Aran sweater while in Ireland. Happy traveling.

No matter where I’ve gone or for how long I’ve never taken more than one carry on bag. I see lots of people with a carry on and a giant tote bag and think it’s madness😂. I’m in the camp of two pairs of trousers (that includes the one I wear on the plane) a couple tops, a blazer, a hoodie, and a small toiletry bag. Basically something to walk in and something to dine in. As a backpacker, if I can live for six months out of a 55L pack, there’s no excuse not to be able to travel anywhere but the arctic without needing shelter, food, and kitchen, using more than 40L of space - no matter the weather. All that is truly needed to go anywhere for any length of time fits in a single pocket (passport and access to money).

Wonderful video and timing is perfect! We're leaving for Bogota (cold) and Argentina (summer, hot) in 12 days and this definitely help. We're only taking carry ons and a backpack for our trip (two adults + a 6 y/o) so I've been carefully planning outfits that can be worn on hot and cold weather and will be wearing the heavier stuff (coats and walking shoes) on the plane. Any tips are more than welcome!

✈️ The 5-4-3-2-1 method is how I intuitively pack! I'm glad I now have a name to it and a video I can share with others. Right now I'm visiting family in the Pilipines for a month, and frankly I could've managed just fine with only a carry-on but I caved and listened to borderline hoarder parent! 😅

I believe I have filled the holes in wardrobe between strategic shopping and raiding my storage unit. South Florida / London have slightly different climates in December. 😅 All my winter stuff is stowed away, but I think I did pretty well. I was intrigued by your solid/cream makeup selection. I tend to just forgo makeup entirely when traveling because packing it seems such a hassle (putting on makeup in a tiny hotel bathroom is also kind of a hassle, lol). That highlighter and cream blush looked so nice! As far as clothes, 5-4-3-2-1 is a great place to start for folks just learning to pack light. It's an easy formula and is a great way to start thinking of capsule-style packing! I usually start with around that much, then edit down further until everything fits in a 30L backpack.

Thanks for the 54321 idea. On the packing cubes, those are considered compression cubes where you close the second zipper to compression the items. You flipped that calling them expandable. I suppose they can be used both ways.

Yes team packing cubes! Also will be keeping in mind the 54321 method to keep me organized! though I think slightly edited to a 4-3-2-1-1. For me, it's more than enough for a trip up to 10-12 days. And especially now that airlines often only allow a personal item! Grr! A 30L backpack works great for this and can fit the slightly edited version. :) Excited for upcoming travels!

It’s def tight because I’ve got 3 dresses (part of it was a cruise) and originally had 4 pairs of shoes, but down to 3 (black trainers, Keen water sandals that I can also hike in, and tan leather sandals that are my dressy option but also comfortable for walking).

✈️ very helpful Christina!👍❤️ We cruise a lot, the next is from Vancouver to Australia via Hawaii and Tahiti with smaller trips to see family in between. I am considering upgrading to the Monos suitcases for durability because Air 🇨🇦 Canada bless ‘em. They keep breaking the luggage I get from Winners- even managed to trash a Heyes one that survived for years. They’re quite good about replacing the luggage they bust but it’s tiresome. They managed to blow a case wide open inSan Francisco and if it wasn’t for an interior zipper compartment for loose stuff and my packing cubes I’d have lost the contents too.

✈️ travelling tomorrow to Heidelberg in Germany! Years of travelling with a 40L backpack has made me super accustomed to the 54321 method. As a kid I helped my grandma handwash (and sometimes do some small mending on clothes) so I know how to take care of my clothes when I’m away. Also there’s almost always a reliable laundry place in different parts of the world. Nowadays I’m eyeing a suitcase from Eastpak - never officially had one until 3 years ago & mine is falling apart so time to get a good quality one 😅

I have both the Monos carry on and the Monos metro backpack. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the suitcase, it is perfect! The backpack on the other hand, not so much. The outer pocket snaps into place but it is not secure. I've lost count how many times it's fallen off while I'm in the middle of busy streets or airports. It's one more thing I have to keep track of so I will be switching backpacks, not worth the hassle.

✈ My husband and I travel a lot for work and leisure. Sometimes it is just a two day trip and at times a month or more. What and how much I pack depends on our destination, the weather there and our activities ...just like you said...except for one place. India! So we live in Canada, but India is where we are originally from. We have family and friends there, so a trip to India is also buying and taking gifts for so many people. We miss birthdays, weddings and other special occasions, living so far away. So when we travel to India, we always carry two large suitcases each, plus our one personal item and one carry on. This is so normal to most Asians. All of the luggage we take, comes back full. LOL. Food we miss, ethnic outfits to wear in Canada as it is much cheaper to buy it there and gifts from our loved ones that we bring back with us. Most airlines do cover a two piece check in when you travel that far. Especially all Asian and Middle Eastern airlines. The first week of December, I'm going to the US for three days. That trip will be only a carry on, and wow your video couldn't have come at a better time. I'm going to follow your packing method and save me the worry of packing too much or too little. Oh....side story. Last month we went to Germany and the airline lost my husbands suitcase. So he had to go shopping for clothes as well as adaptors for our chargers, that we had packed in his suitcase. The airline did eventually find his luggage and had it sent to our hotel the day before our flight back to Canada. 🤦‍♀ The airline did re-imburse us the shopping. So that was good. Next time, we will pack at least one set of clothes in each others suitcases, just to be on the safe side. Safe travels Christina. Can't wait to see your vacation outfits.

Thanks a lot for this great video packing carry-on. In October 2024 I will go on a 9 day Alaska cruise. Because of only having 2 hours from arriving international at LAX to connecting flight Seattle (staying two days in Seattle before cruise), I decided to go only with carry-on and personal item. So, I'm a bit of an "over-planning" person (still having 6 months to go) 😂. I've just tested 5-4-3-2-1 method and folding instructions, whether it works even for Alaska 😁 and it really does and gets me more space in my luggage. In addition, I'm lucky - I will have free laundry at my cruise. And your tip, wearing a sweater over shoulder and using as a pillow when flying, is great - I have a thick (but extremely warm) fleece sweater and was worrying, how to pack it, now you gave me the perfect solution. Thanks a lot. Greetings from Moorea (sister island of Tahiti) in French-Polynesia 🌴 🏖 😎🇵🇫🇫🇷🇪🇺

I pack the same of 5 tops, including one warmer top like a sweater, but only 2 pants, usually blue jeans and black jeans, and everything goes with everything else. I tend to pack black, grey and blue. One thing I like to bring is 3 or 4 very light scarves to change this up a bit. I only bring one pair of shoes which I obviously wear on the plane, and they are usually a black pair of Blundstones or similar. For makeup, if you use cream makeup like me then you need to have a look at Seint cream makeup that all fits into a palette. The makeup and the palettes are TSA approved. Besides the palette all you need to bring is skin care, mascara and makeup brushes. I absolutely love this makeup and makes travelling so much simpler and saves a ton of space!!

Make-up wise, I learned to find "flexible" make-up. Natural eyeshadow palette that has my eyebrow colour so I don't need an extra eyebrow pencil/powder and highlighter. I sometimes use it as eyeliner too (just wetting my brush). Lipstick-blush creams. Tinted moisturizers that have spf so it also acts as my sunblock. Surprisingly as well, I tint my brows, so they're darker, so I won't have to focus too much on filling them. I also have lash extensions, so I haven't used mascarra for 2 years now. Woot.
