I haven't seen many groups who've played Storm King's Thunder, so it's great to hear an overview from someone who has ran it multiple times. I've been pretty sour on it, but I think I'll give it another read.

I've enjoyed it each time I've run it. I definitely use the written modules as guidelines not rules. I encourage you to use the parts you like, change what you can, and scrap the rest. Thanks for the feedback.
Regarding the mini-adventure, you might want to swap the invaders with goliaths (using generic NPCs from the Monster Manual) and to swap the mysterious elves that appear at the end with firbolg. The goliaths can be there as conquerors or they might believe they're actually competing with the real giants somehow. Doing so makes this small part of the campaign a more thematic setup for the rest of the adventure. It won't fix the other issues with it, but it makes it a little more memorable than just fighting goblins.
I would definitely keen to see your reviews on Adventure League modules. They don’t get much publicity at all. I ran the Icewind Dale twin campaign and thought it was very cool.

Running it right now and enjoying it, rather than speed thru chapter 3 I’m enjoying letting the story play out
