This is the Fenix TK20Rv2 - Comparing my favourite tactical flashlight of 2021 the Fenix TK16v2 with the new kid on the block.
Why is the new Fenix TK20R v2 my choice for best tactical flashlight of 2022? In this video I compare the TK16v2 my 2021 winner, side-by-side with the latest TK20R v2 so you can see exactly what's changed.

Product Sourcing:
When it comes to sourcing a product for review, I will usually either purchase and item personally or reach out to a supplier requesting a sample for review. Most suppliers, after seeing the channel, are supportive if they are confident in their product, appreciating the value of greater exposure.
I am sometimes asked to review a product by a supplier which I will only agree to if the product fits the channel and I believe will be of interest to you, my audience. Also the product needs to be worthy of a review. It is not in my interest to review inferior or poor quality products and therefore as you might expect many requests are politely declined.
Any sponsored videos (paid for reviews) are clearly stated as such so there can be no misunderstanding. Even with sponsored reviews I will only agree to a sponsorship on products and services which I believe will be of genuine interest to viewers.
I will always make reference in the video to products which have been provided for review by a supplier and I always make it clear to the supplier that they cannot influence or be involved in the review in any way if they choose to supply a product.
Sometimes a supplier will provide a link to the product or the supplier which I am happy to include in the description. Sometimes I will be provided with an affiliate link so I can earn a commission on sales and this helps to support channel costs but never at the expense of an honest review.
If a product I have reviewed is available from Amazon I will often include an Amazon link in the description. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you purchase a product or service with the links that I provide I may receive a small commission. There is no additional charge to you.
Comments:
I really appreciate the feedback in the comments - I find it a source of knowledge and inspiration - so thank you to all of you who take the time to contribute. I have recently found that if I continue to respond to all the comments as the number of videos builds, it takes time away from being able to produce new content which would be very counter productive! - so my aim is to read everything I can and reply when I can, after each video goes live, until the next video goes live a week later. I'll see how that works out 😊
Thank you for supporting the channel so I can continue to provide you with regular reviews, thoughts and ideas and (hopefully) inspiration! Please consider subscribing to keep up to date with new video releases.

Nice review, although I don’t entirely agree with the findings. I’m a police officer (UK) and I (and my colleagues) have tried a many torches from brands like Olight (my favourite at home), Nitecore (decent), LED Lenser (awful) and others… but Fenix is by far my favourite brand for work. I’m on my 3rd Fenix now (for reasons) but personally, at least from a general policing perspective in the UK the best for me is actually the PD36R. It’s a better size (the TK range is just slightly too big to be comfortably carried on a tac vest) and I disagree with the charging; we have to charge quite frequently and taking the battery out is a chore and opening all the time ruins the o-ring seal quickly. We have lockers for our tablets and radios with a USB C charger in them, so it’s far easier to just quickly plug into the side and water ingress has never been an issue. Everyone who doesn’t work in the emergency services/military (and indeed many manufacturers) think they know what the best ‘tactical’ torches are, but few understand what the actual day to day use is like. Unless I’m a special unit we carry 1 torch only. They need to be good allrounders (close up, reading, shot and long range searches, navigating through woods…) and reliability and ease of use is way more important than smashing glass, which you might do once a year at best (and we have other better things for that), so thats just a gimmick really. I do miss moonlight mode though, and I don’t think any torch marketed at law enforcement should be without it. It’s essential for close up work, writing/reading notes, checking kit, and etc without blinding yourself or your oppo who is driving. This probably account for 50% of its use.

@@mickyp4 The new PD36R pro. I have tested it side by side with the TK20 v2, and you can’t tell any difference in performance - same led, virtually same brightness (can’t tell unless both are on next to each other, even then it’s no more useful), beam pattern and spread, same tail switches and beam pattern. Basically the PD36R pro is the same torch, but its slightly shorter and 40g. It doesn’t have the same so-called ‘tactical’ head, but no one needs that away, and the smaller head on the PD mean it will slip in a pocket. The PD36R pro is also a bit cheaper at the moment.

Hey mate. Fellow cop here. I also happen to be a Brit but ended up in the States (long story). I find that I need direct access to Turbo mode with a single button press regardless of what mode I left the light on at, especially for traffic stops and punching through window tints on vehicles. Lower modes are definitely useful too for checking IDs and other administrative work. Currently using a Klarus XT21X and it’s been great

Good review as usual Jon, the best UK based channel of this type, but you need to take a look at the new the new-ish PD36R Pro. I have just tested it side by side with the TK20 v2, as I ordered both from Amazon (to replace the PD36R I have the side switch on the normal PD36R is very annoying) and you can’t tell any difference in performance - same led and battery, virtually same brightness (can’t tell unless both are on next to each other, even then it’s no more useful), beam pattern and spread, same tail switches and operation, same clip etc. Basically the PD36R pro is the same torch, but its slightly shorter and 40g lighter. It doesn’t have the same so-called ‘tactical’ head, but no one needs that away (even in my job as cop) and the smaller head on the PD mean it will slip in a pocket and is a better EDC. The PD36R pro is also a bit cheaper at the moment to. I also carry mine on a molle tac-vest every day and the little extra weight and size of the TK20r just tips it into the too big category. I honestly reckon if you tried it you would prefer it from an EDC standpoint mate.

The instant strobe is cool but the ability to instant turbo is the most important aspect of a tactical light which surefire, streamlight, olight, klarus, acebeam and literally every tactical product from these companies has. Fenix doesn't have that and that is a big no no. No matter how good your tactical light was built, if the UI is garbage, the whole light is just a fancy toy. I'm not talking about instant turbo using memory mode, instant turbo means in any situation, in any mode, you hit the main switch, the light blast its full power, no hassle.

This flashlight is very well built and I have had no problems with buttons locations as I always use the tactical holster that came with it. The flashlight does get hot within seconds in turbo and strobe modes. These are very expensive flashlights but is well worth their price tags because of their defense features and because they are rechargeable, which means they buy themselves.

I still prefer my TK16 Mk2 as the battery can be charged outside the flashlight as this has more advantages especially if you purchase a second battery like I did. There is no need to have extra fiddly charging compartments that rely on the O-Rings to keep out water. No mention if the rings were replaceable for the charging section. I also prefer the inclusion of the tungsten spikes as this helps to protect the paintwork of the bezel. Fenix are really trying to squeeze more money out of us.

  • @JonGadget

    @JonGadget

I get those points and the 16 is a great light - but if I was buying new now I would go for the extra range which is more noticeable that the video shows - and the battery state LED is good to have too. I wouldn't expect the bezel paintwork to degrade particularly without the spikes.

Really not a fan of the light remembering the last used mode. For genuine professional use it needs to be a UI that jumps straight to maximum output for when the user immediately needs a lot of light. A secondary switch either on the side or back that will let you get to a low or memory mode is my preference for a second mode, as you are generally in less of a rush to access a low light mode. Jon is right about needing to have a simple UI but the unmentioned additional point is that it must be consistent every time. No use to need a lot of light quickly only to jump to the lowest mode you used at the end of your shift the night before to look under the car seat!

You mentioned Fire/Rescue in your video. Waterproof, I found out, is not the same as having the UL logo on a light.

I absolutely love Fenix lights but I have told them to address the biggest drawback to their “tactical” lights- there needs to be a way to instantly get to TURBO or at least high. They should release a version WITHOUT memory mode so the light always starts in turbo OR give us a way to program 2 different modes - daily and tactical similar to what Nitecore and Klarus do on several models. Models like the PD36 TAC, TK11 TAC, that use their other tailcap are great, but would be nice to see their dual button tailcaps be able to have 2 different modes.

Magnetic charging, battery indicator you can actually see, direct turbo and moonlight mode. I can't see any benefits of having this TK.

I'm not sure if I agree with lightweight and compact as part of "Tactical" description. My issued Streamlight Stinger isn't anywhere near compact nor lightweight but it probably sees more "tactical" work than most so called "tactical" lights that people really just buy for mundane tasks. Sure a "tactical" light can be compact and lightweight, I just think that it's not necessarily a requirement.

I've always wondered - how genuinely useful is a strobe mode? Even for the police/military? The skeptic in me thinks its more of a marketing gimmick from the torch companies and the scenarios where a strobe would be appreciably more useful than a really bright mode is more Hollywood than real life. Nonetheless great review as always and still a really nice looking torch.

I do armed security overnight and use strobe all the time to disorient confrontational people and signal for different things. I’ve used it to signal my local police departments helicopter as well as officers so they can get to my location without my communication I’ve used it to direct traffic. I won’t purchase a light without strobe it’s a function I’m not willing to compromise on. Strobe causes different affects on your eyes than a constant beam. Constant beam will cause spots in the place you got shined in on your eye when you look away strobe will cause you to see spots all over

When it comes to professional use having no port on the body is a huge advantage. When you use a flashlight in hrash environment beeing sealed is priority number one also charging port gets damaged over time especially if you use it every day. It is much nicer to simly replace the battery or have and extra battery instead of buying a new flash light. I do have a flash light with a charging port and after one year of use already has problems including poor connection. It is not fenix but similar style. For non comercial use charging port is convenient but for comercial use it is a pain. I am guessing this is why the old model is available even in 2023.

Am I the only one who thinks these new lights coming out with 2000+ lumens on turbo are just trying to do too much? I just returned a Fenix pd36r pro because yes it can achieve 2800 lumens.. for about 30 seconds before getting ridiculously hot and stepping down. If I needed that much output I wouldn’t be using a single 21700 battery light. Anywhere between 1600 and 2000 lumens would be great and having such a gap between high and turbo is impractical in my opinion.
