The Best Slice of Life Anime: Bocchi the Rock

Фильм және анимация

2022 provided us some phenomenal anime and manga, such as shows like Spy x Family, Kaguya-sama: Love is War 3, Demon Slayer season 2, and Chainsaw Man. It seemed impossible to pick a favorite among all of these amazing products - but one stood far above the rest, and its one some don't even know about. This show is Bocchi the Rock, which is now the winner of the 2024 Anime Awards for Best Slice of Life. Follow me as I delve into this show about Hitori Gotou with her love for the guitar, and rock n' roll, along with her struggles of social anxiety. This video will explain to you why the anime is the best thing to come out of last year.

"Bocchi the Rock" is an adaptation of a manga from the mangaka Aki Hamaji, recently adapted by CloverWorks. The Studio's accolades are The Promised Neverland, Horimiya, Spy x Family, My Dress-Up Darling, Darling in the Franxx, Wonder Egg Priority, and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. Unlike their past with Zero Two, this story follows the socially anxious Hitori "Bocchi" Gotou (Yoshino Aoyama), an aspiring guitar player who wants to perform in her school festival. She later meets drummer Nijika Ichiji (Sayumi Suzushiro), bassist Ryou Yamada (Saku Mizuno), and guitarist/vocalist Ikuyo Kita (Ikumi Hasegawa). This entire band is a reference to Asian Kung Fu Generation, which have performed songs like Re:Re from Erased, After Dark from Bleach, Haruka Kanata from Naruto, and Rewrite from Fullmetal Alchemist. The Bocchi the Rock Experience.
In this absurd adaptation, CloverWorks gives us wild animation in many of the scenes like with Bocchis Solo. Gigguk’s reaction to Bocchi the Rock was surprising to me because I had no clue he’d enjoy it as much as he did. You can very much feel the love and passion put into their musical scenes as their songs like Guitar, Loneliness and Blue Planet, Karakara, That Band, and seishyun complex are fantastic songs. The masterpiece that is Bocchi the rock. In an honest review I believe very much that this is anime of the year, beating the likes of Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War, Chainsaw Man, Made in Abyss, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, Vinland Saga Season 2, Mob Psycho 100, Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Blue Lock, My Hero Academia Season 6, Kaguya-Sama Love is War, Spy x Family, and many more.
Thank you guys!

WAIT! Before you comment it, I know that's *Yamcha* and not *Goku.* Don't type it! I see you. I know you want to type it, but nooo you mustn't. Also editing this comment to put in that I have been told many a-times in this comment section that Hitori actually writes all the lyrics, not just the one song so that was an error on my part. Now, some of you might be getting a notification for this video and thinking to yourself: "Wait, didn't he upload this a few days ago?" And if you thought that, you would be right! The part where Bocchi does her solo was claimed for copyright, so I put more edits on that clip to hopefully keep it copyright free. Sorry for the ping! I just really want to make this video stick, I put a lot of heart into it. In other words, its good to be back! The response for the first time this video was live was so positive, and it made me very happy to have made it. If you haven't watched Bocchi the Rock, please go do so. It's so, so good. Happy New Year! And have a wonderful day :)

This show made me, a 30 year old man, change something I recognized I was doing to myself. The introduction of Hiroi, the "Happiness Spiral", and Bocchi's dark potential future helped me realize I needed to cut back on my drinking. I started drinking for the exact same reason as Hiroi, to overcome my introversion and anxiety but it had started following me home. I started waking up and feeling like I wanted a drink. Anyway, this silly magnificent show helped me realize that's not who I want to be going forward.

when the string broke on the last episode. its crazy how much i relate to the scene since im a guitarist and musician myself. when hitori tried to tune her 1st string it made a noise, and it look hard to turn the peg, in that instance i thought to myself ( oh, is the string gonna break?) and it did. that attention to detail is fantastic. this happen to me on multiple show and it always panic inducing every single time. but like hitori, you'll learn how to handle the situation in multiple ways.

@@MrHunteru the noise is definitely exagerrated on the show though, not necessarily mean that a string is gonna break. but sometimes it is :) what also impress me on episode 12 performance is the small detail like you point out in the video(the interaction between members etc) but also for me is this.. you could see small movement when hitori press a button on her pedalboard to switch effect on/off. or on the 2nd song she didn't stand facing nijika like the other two cause she's gonna play a wah pedal so she need to stand where her effect is. i could go on sorry for long post but i just so impress by the animation, they got no reason to be that good but it is that good.

@@MrHunteru the alcoholic bassist Hiroi coming to the culture festival (together with Starry manager and her elder alumni Seika Ichiji) was the crucial part: 1 she brought the bottle and placed it in the front edge of the stage 2 she lifted her eyelid when she heard Bocchi tuning the loose string, leading to the climax 3 Bocchi went to Sick Hack performance in ep 10 in Shinjiku Folt, where Bocchi witnessed Hiroi doing stage dive so when she was caught blindsidedly by the mic delivered from Kita (albeit in good will), she could only mimic what Hiroi had done, and without the best circumstances and atmosphere, her dive fell flat. btw, Seika, Hiroi and Ryo were the three started laughing, because they knew better than Bocchi that right atmosphere and right crowd were not there. @@nikitasfantasies6658 i’m not sure how to explain properly. But when you play with a slide(the bottle), the slightest move will change the note on more extreme level than playing with your finger. And also bcause the position of the bottle doesn’t touch the fingerboard directly, it sounds more smoother when you move around the fingerboard. Therefore what bocchi needed to do was find the right note and play around it even though the tuning of the guitar was off bcause of the broken string. Im sorry i dont think i explained it properly but i hope it helps.

This show was so good glad I watched it before it slipped my mind. The animation style reminds me of Courage the Cowardly Dog and Gumball with how it enforces several styles like claymation, 3D modeling, and surrealism. Bocchi is painfully accurate to how socially awkward people act but you want her to break free of it. She has a good support group for friends who try to make her comfortable. We could read between the lines that Hiroi is most connected to Seika the manager. Remember when Hiroi went to Starry and she held her arms around Seika (though Seika showed some grudge) and Hiroi addressed Hitori as Bocchi-chan right away. In contrast, in the scene of street performance, Hiroi said Hitori-chan in this entire scene. From the demeanor and speech change, we could see Hiroi and Seika must have contacted each other between the timeline from ep06 to ep08

I relate not just to Bocchi's anxiety, but to her tendency to catastrophize situations, to imagine the worst that could happen, and her neurotic tendencies to see the negative rather than positive in a situation. and also to performing best when shit hits the fan, while otherwise being a disaster. it's too real. And sometimes I do feel, metaphorically, like I could dissolve into dust, or pop like a balloon, after doing something particularly embarrassing or being in a strange and unfamiliar situation. And I think here it's important to talk about subject vs object, when it comes to storytelling. Bocchi is consistently a subject rather than an object, someone whose feelings we feel - whose mood literally warps the reality of the show. She isn't just the main character - she has heavily defined wants and ideals and fears. now, and this is a really low hanging fruit for comparison, but I can't help it, Komi from Komi Can't Communicate is by and large an object. Like, yes, we know she wants friends, but we don't hear her inner monologue, and both the writing and the shot framing put her up on a pedestal, and sort of otherize her. While a lot of what her classmates believe about her isn't true, it seems like it's only natural for them to idolize her and obsess over her. which, no? That's fucking weird. but that's beside the point. The subject of Komi Can't Communicate, in most cases, is Tadano. Sometimes it will be one of the side characters interacting with Komi. But it's not Komi. Seeing Bocchi's anxieties dramatized, and her panic attacks cartoonishly warping her, not only reinforces her subjectivity, but even creates a sort of 'hypersubjectivity' where the viewer's ability to feel empathy for the character skyrockets. She Just Like Me, FR. The visual gags have a conscious, holistic purpose - to put us in her headspace. The mixed media and the art style shifts are jarring, and that draws the viewer's attention more than something done closer to the show's 'standard' style. That further reinforces the subjectivity. In general, nothing in moving pictures, be it live action or animated, series or film, works better to enhance a main character's quality as a subject than to have everything warp around them. This is much easier in animation, but it's done quite a lot in live action. If the character's mental state affects what we see and how we see it, it affords them a certain status they wouldn't so easily have if we were just looking at them from an objective lens. Bocchi the Rock fully exploits the unique potentials of the medium of animation to do this in ways I've only otherwise seen in a couple of things, off the top of my head I can only think of the Monogatari series anime. And by making her subject rather than object, Bocchi the Rock portrays social anxiety much better than anything else in anime. We're not watching her fail. We're sitting with her in the failure. We're not laughing at her stressing out - we're laughing a bit nervously as her freak out cuts a bit too deep and maybe reminds us of that one time. also, I love Kikuri Hiroi more than is reasonable, Questionably Functional Drunk Adult Woman is literally my favorite anime character type.

The band performances feel like they're live performances because they basically are. They took a real band, filmed that band playing the songs, then drew the 2D stuff on top. That's why the performance scenes are so absurdly realistic. As for Hitori feeling so relatable to people regardless of gender, that's because Hitori isn't written as a girl with social anxiety, but as a person with social anxiety, who just happens to be a girl. It's a subtle difference, but it makes a huge difference. Also, the two moments when Hitori takes a chance and does something nobody expects, risks embarrassing herself but instead earns the band a bunch of fans just give me goosebumps every time I see them. Both times, she takes a huge chance, and she saves the day. Funny enough, they're also the only guitar solos we ever hear in the show, and they're saved for those real climactic moments, the way guitar solos honestly should be.

  • @ArchOfficial

I think they probably used mocap instead of rotoscoping. You can see polygon edges and the models just simply look 3D. They then drew some 2D on top of the cuts that didn't look good in 3D.

Sometimes key visual is what make or break for anime, and most of the times anime only got 1 KV. If they got popular, the more KV are produced for BD covers . But did you know that Bocchi the Rock has total 15 KV produced before airing, during airing, and after the last episode? Loved this video. Really loved your analysis of how the band evolves. And Episode 8 made me cry. Exactly the same moment you refer to. There is also another moment that stood out. When Bocchi performs on the street, the drunken bass player gives her advice: "Don't treat the audience as the enemy". When one of her future fans calls out support during the performance, Bocchi changes her performance and she recognizes that the audience isn't the enemy. However, doing an adlib slide guitar solo at the drop of a hat and under pressure is HARD, even if it's something you specialize in. Hitori really is a guitar hero and massively talented for her age. Hell a lot of the riffs she plays in the songs are challenging - way harder than you would expect for a guitarist who's been playing for 3 years. I feel like Kessoku Band is geniunely going to make an impact on J-Rock as a genre (both in the story and irl). Their album was the top of Japanese music charts for weeks with them being first place in the Digital Albums Chart for four weeks straight, apparently a first for any female group ever. This might just be me making assumptions, but I feel like it’s popularity correlates with many Gen Z’s resonating with the songs “written” by Bocchi. The concept of an underdog band overcoming the odds and becoming famous has been done plenty of times but I feel like the somewhat cynical lyrics of Kessoku Band’s songs becoming mainstream can be seen as inspirational for a generation of people raised during the internet era, where the constant stream of information overwhelms them and makes them feel like life in general is just a miserable existence. I mean I’m pretty sure it’s not like there hasn’t been other Japanese bands that have also written cynical Gen Z lyrics and are hits, I just feel like Kessoku Band might have left a bigger impact since it’s coming from an anime series with moe girls. I literally have nothing to back up these statements, like I said it’s just ramblings from someone listening to Seishun Complex for the fifth time on loop.

man i relate to bocchi the rock on a universal level, such realistic examples of what having social anxiety is like. never in my life have i ever seen a show have such a great story, animation, music and funny moments. i've never had this much fun with a show in a long time sure all these repetitive shonen are good but shows like these where you see these characters as actual people with emotions and personality other than just a super powered knuckle head who fights alot , seeing them as people i can relate to and feel for just hits me in a spot where no other anime could bocchi is now one of my fav anime and i 100 percent agree with the title. cant wait for season 2 ''if its ever happening''

Wish i had members like them when i was active in the band scene xD man i love how u pointed out how its so different to K-on i was feeling the same way towards that show. I kept waiting when are they gonna rock out ? but its mostly school slice of life for that show, while BTR feels like u are watching a band grow from the indies (it would feel this way even more if u continue following the story up to the current chapters in the manga!)

And I knew the anime is good, and there's care and talent put into it, but it's the first instance when I realized just HOW MUCH of thought went into making it. Amazing video, when I saw the the video length I didn't think I'd end up staying for the whole ride but the passion you have for this show really showed and I loved hearing your analysis of it. This show completely caught me off guard as well because I didn't even start watching, let alone even have it in my radar, until around the 4th episode when I saw a clip of Bocchi glitching out and I thought it was fake. When I went to find the scene and saw it was actually part of an actual episode airing that season I had to include it in my sat night anime viewing with friends and we quickly grew to love this anime. When we got to watch their first time playing together I thought to myself "Ugh, if they actually show them playing it'll prolly be short and maybe even a bit cringe" but boy was I fucking wrong. I can't believe how amazing the music for this show ended up being that it even got me to do the impossible and buy my first anime merch with it being the soundtrack to the show followed by the BD's. Never did I think I'd get as invested in the show as I did but with the whole the characters in the story, the absolute stellar animation, the banging music, and the character development for Bocchi to the point where I felt like a dad watching their daughter grow up it ended up becoming my favorite anime of the year. Hell it's definitely one of my favorite anime of all time now too!

While I was hooked from the beginning, ever since seeing clips of it, it was the concert scene that makes me floored. You have to understand -- I recently played through the concert scene of Trails of Cold Steel and started out playing/reading Musicus (from the same maker as Kira Kira), the former managed to botch a concert they try to hype and the latter managed to sell me that energy that concerts with minimum budget, stock assets, and mostly narration. That was two extremes of "being able to deliver a good experience and yet failing," and "not having enough resource and yet succeeding". So Bocchi took this concert energy that I only read up on and give me a visual that makes me _get it_ . I have never been to a concert in my life, and yet nothing has made me want to go to one as much as Bocchi and Musicus working in tandem celebrating the experience of going to concert. A lot of the Bocchi stuff are funny and #relatable, but the concert inspired a real desire for me to get out and go to one of these concerts/clubs now that things are finally getting back to normal. That was also when I know I needed to show this anime to my musician friend, and two weeks ago we spend just hanging out at his house marathoning the whole season. It was a ton of fun.

have to say as a Metal Musician myself this reminded me so much of the story arc behind my first gig (which I just had about a month ago, basically 10 years in the making) and this show catches the general anxiety so so well but also this great otherworldly feeling of finally being noticed, people actually listening and cheering, to contrast all the stress you go throw before you play (and sometimes during the little breaks in between). bottom line: made me cry a lot for all reasons (great comedy, great feels, great story arc) - this was definitely one of the goats, especially when it comes to music anime, and definitely worth a place in the hall of fame. I hope there can be a season 2 and if they ever do a Dub for this, they are gonna have such a hard time, but I wish them all the luck in the world, because this anime needs to be as availiable as possible for everyone!

As someone who plays guitar in a rock band, I am a sucker for any band anime and I already had my eye on this show looooooong before it seemingly blew up out of nowhere. For me, in addition to being a very good anime in general, it captures the spirit of performing in a live band and all the things that come with it. It was especially awesome seeing the little details too as a live musician, Bocchi playing a classy Les Paul Custom, Kita playing a Les Paul Jr, Ryou with the Fender bass, and my bands drummer said he even spotted Nijika playing a signature snare drum from Pearl. They were plugging into Marshall and Ampeg amp stacks, and it captures the spirit of live performance from an up and coming band pretty much spot on. Super happy that the show popped off and maybe this will lead to more weeb musicians in the world :)

Bocchi really takes animation as a medium and just plays with it. They used so many techniques that were just amazing. Not gonna lie it made me realize again what kind of possibilities lie in animation. Just a technique breakdown of animation stuff used in bocchi would be enough to fill a 30 minute + video... now listen I'm not saying you should do one xD but you totally should xD. The reason the Lives / them playing seem so well animated is that it's motion capture -> CG -> rotoscope -> drawing on top (and embellishment like the motion-blur of Nijikas Drumsticks, for example). They actually do this quite a bit (for example the scene you point out of "them just walking"), but its so subtle and well executed that its hard to miss. Overall the show is just a prime example of the power of letting all the involved artists be creative in how they want to do things. Absolute 10/10

I played guitar in a band during my school years. We had several small concerts on local events, bars and clubs. But after we graduated we all moved away. This was already 8 years ago and I barely touched my guitar since then. A few weeks ago I heard "Crow Song" by "Girls Dead Monsters" from the Angel Beats Anime again - the song that was the reason for me to start with guitar back then. I'm really hard practicing now, even have a guitar teacher who plays in a rock band himself, and it just feels like I'm slowly starting to live again after years of just "existing". Angel Beats and Bocchi the Rock are so encouraging and motivating on this path, I really love them. Especially I can relate hard to several scenes with Bocchi overthinking everything.

It gives the guitar the ability to play more chords on the same fret/string and it has a unique sound. VERY DIFFICULT though to play it this way, especially on the fly like that, which is why Seika, Nijika's older sister, was so shocked to see that. Every bit of Bocchi's practicing was meant for this moment. Now if only they would have caught her on the stage dive lol

Bro I was unprepared watching this show, and never HAVE I EVER SEEN MYSELF SO PERFECTLY PORTRAYED INTO AN ANIME EVER. I perfectly relate to Bocchi so much because I'm also a guitarist who has potential in writing songs and music to show to the world, but can't because of my utter despair in having social anxiety whenever I have the chance to show to people that I'm good at playing 😢. Not only that, I also fuccing picked up guitar 5 yrs ago because I also have the same reason as bocchi. Scared to admit it as much as I want to, but my fuccing ass decided to learn guitar one day because of being inspired of how popular the guitarist in my class are. In my mind, I was like "Mmm I wanna learn guitar too so I can get friends and be praised/popular/given attention around people". Lately I've also joined a club and then I got a chance to perform on stage once and it was so freaking awesome! So a bit of uplifting moments after that, I managed to conquer a bit of my social anxiety. AGAIN, NEVER HAVE I EVER THOUGHT THAT THIS BOCCHI IS LITTERALLY ALMOST LIKE A SELF INSERT OF ME INSIDE AN ANIME 😭💓 I FUCKING LOVE THIS ANIME SO MUCH, THAT I CRY WHENEVER OTHER PEOPLE PRAISE IT FOR IT'S UNIQUENESS

Bocchi is so relatable for me that it's almost scary.. She even posts guitar covers on the KZread (shameless plug). I also love the fact that every single piece of gear you see on the show are actual real world products (also Ryo namedropping somewhat niche brands that many young bass players dream of owning), hell, even Hitori's surname is a brand that makes parts for electric guitars and basses. EDIT: great video btw! subbed.

Great video, shame you didn't mention what Hiroi said to bocchi about how her audience isn't her enemy which definitely helped with her character development. This anime really made me pick up the bass again after trying it out two years ago then dropping it, it definitely reignited something in me.

I thought about mentioning that scene, but I didn’t want it to be super long so I went with the scene that was more impactful for me. I think it’s awesome you picked up the bass again though, I hope it goes well :)

to me, i agree with you. however that is before i watched Osama Ranking yesterday. i'm only 3 episodes in and believe this has the potential to become the best in 2022. but yeah i love Bocchi the Rock so much as i'm literally putting it above chainsaw man, blue lock, Kaguya sama, demon slayer, and maybe the same tier as Attack on Titan. please go watch it, it's so much better than you think. and also watch Osama Ranking too, it's so freaking good.
