Why am I not surprised that the puma velocity nitro 2 is mentioned as a beginner shoe. I think it's a great recommendation as it's so approachable and friendly at all paces.

Completely agree. Started back into running this year after doing a little pre-covid. Got the VN2 and they've been absolutely amazing at everything.

Balega hidden comfort socks are the best. I've tried many other brands but the Balega ones are so comfortable and they last forever. Also buying the Garmin ForeRunner 245 watch has been my best investment ever. Not a really starter/budget friendly one but it has taken my training to a whole new level.

Sorry Kieran, I know you explained yourself earlier but blowing £110 on under shorts and a base tee is not an option for most new runners. When I started six years ago I kitted myself out for that much including shoes. Yes I spend a lot more now but still use kit I bought for £10 years ago. Great video besides though. I would always look to buy last year’s version to save money. Some online stores bargain basement have great kit for a fraction of the rrp. Also think about sizing up half a shoe size from your normal shoe’s which I have done as feet swell slightly when you run. Also Decathlon stuff tends to be small so I always size up in their clothing also.

My gear includes aZengear calf compression sleeves. As for me, calf sleeves are better than socks. I feel really comfortable.

My number 1 tip for beginners is nothing to do with gear mine would be to try and join a local running club getting in with other runners and going to club training sessions adds so much to the sport of running.

Another great video, thanks! Was a little jarring hearing Tom and Nick mention the benefits of keeping it cheap, then Kieran throwing the £55 t-shirts at us! Would be brilliant to have a written shortlist for this sort of stuff somewhere.

Hi David, (Kieran here), I guess it depends a little on how you judge cheap. I don't really like that term so much. for me it's as much about value as generally items being 'cheap'.Items with good longevity stand out for me. And the Under Armour base layer tops I recommended here, have been going strong for close to 3 years with literally 1,000s of miles in them. So I think they represent really good value. The RRP is £55 but you can also find deals on them very often, too.

@@TheRunTesters Thanks for the reply Kieran. I was being a bit cheeky with my comment. I can see where you're coming from, and actually recently bought an expensive item with that same principle in mind (an ultra-light NB jacket that tom recommended - has been amazing!). Please keep up the great work - I enjoy watching.

Agree with the watch (non-recommendations). I ran with a phone only for a while (with strava), and even nowadays when I forget to charge the Garmin it doesn't really bother me. Also many people already own fitbits etc so just use that for the time being. Also agree re cheapo wireless headsets: like i mostly listen to podcasts so I don't fuss about sound quality.

I just started running early August this year and pick up Pegasus 39 for daily training and Alpha fly v2 for 5k parkrun. Now I got the shin splints and plantar fasciitis… I plan to get invincible 2 when I save up the money. 😊 and only Strava.

I’ve got a similar shoe rotation inc the invincibles. What do you think caused the issues? Was it the Alphaflys?

Just started running and you have Alphafly's already loollll. This is what happens when people watch too many of these running youtube channels. You do not need carbon plated super shoes after 3 months running, and for 5k parkruns. Just stick to the Pegasus 39 for at least 6-9 months while your body adapts to running.

  • @hkim9151

@@garethknapton2144 nope. I just use the alpha fly for my 5k race only… just like a little bit less weight on the run. Other wise it was only on that Pegasus as my daily trainer, easy and speed runs… so no recovery shoe. I thought the stack height would get me enough heel support, but nope… did not want to get max cushion shoe with max weight too. Lol

@@hummuswithpitta yeah too much influenced to get the alphafly , only use that for race day. The shoe geometry and the air pods are very helpful to get my PR on most days. Only stick to that Pegasus for everything else, which was not enough cushion apparently…. Now I am influenced that I need to get the max cushioned shoe too. Lol

Can not recommend None2Run enough! Well worth paying for beginner program. Went from zero running two years ago to doing two half marathons in the last few months. Once you’ve completed N2R then the Nike Run Club guided runs are great for starting either a 5km training plan or delving into long runs/speedwork. Wireless headphones and watch have have been a game changer but don’t underestimate a good pair of socks and underwear that’ll definitely help your comfort! Baby rash power/creme is your best friend if your getting chafing. I run in a hot climate so breathability is key. Try and avoid just straight cotton shirts. I’m still searching for the perfect shirt/singlet but the Nike Miler shirts and singlets are pretty damn good for hot runs (if they are a little short).

Just bear in mind that it's probably only good for 150 miles at its top performance. It will still last as long as other shoes, it'll just not have the same bounce that it once did. For this reason most will save them for race day.

Anything from NB or any other brand but New Balance More. It really hurts. One word to describe the shoes - pain or bricks. I need at least half a week after an easy run in them to heal my sore knees and ankles.

Trying on shoes for size at your local running shop and then buying them online for cheaper is not good advice. Independent shops will struggle to stay in business if everyone does that.
