No. He said you can be 3 reps from failure. It's best to go to failure every set. Most people are too lazy to do it though

@@janusasorousrex2118hitting failure on every set is not optimal. you are putting too much stress on your body when you don't need to and exhausting your muscles way too faes. ending with 1-3 RIR at most sets is ideal

@@alhassanali4829 Putting stress on your body is the point. Thats what elicits muscle growth. The problem of exhausting your muscles too fast can be fixed by just waiting longer between each set.

It's coping strategies for muscle growth - damage has to be done to the muscle, which is indicated by lactic acid buildup. Going nowhere near failure doing a set of 30 will cause lots of damage to the muscle, not as much as heavier loads but still enough to build muscle.
I just go to failure each set because I don’t know when I only have 3 reps left
I only go till failure on last excersixe
In my opinion there is no best rep range to build muscle as long as you’re training close to failure
And the higher reps you do, cardiovascular fatigue starts to become a factor. However, too low reps would mean you would have to lift super heavy, which could cause joint pain. Thats why, 6-12 is a great medium in building muscle
I always go for 10 unless I'm doing squat bench deadlift

Time under tension does not contribute to hypertrophy at all. That’s exactly why 5 reps can be the same as 30.

I'd say the optimal rep range depends on whether the exercise is a compound or an isolated one, In case of heavy compund lifts like Bench Press 8-12 Reps is good enough but for isolation movements like Bicep Curls you might as well increase the reps all the way to 15-20 to work the muscle optimally.

Important thing to have in mind is that not all muscles are the same, some contain more fast twitch and some have more slow twitch fibers, if a muscle is primarily a slow twitch muscle than it needs a whole lot more volume than usual 8-12 x 3-4 for example forearms and calves, most people don't grow them because they train them like it's chest or triceps

powerlifting or weightlifting is atleast a lot more functional than bodybuilding, f.ex explosive deadlifts or squats can help in wrestling

Rippetoe says the magic number is fives. Anything more, 6+, is too little weight to create enough stimulus. It’s just fluff and pump.
