You're absolutely right Shimmy, so many people love having a wide variety of t-shirts to express their personalities, and people can't really wear the same ones day after day, so they keep buying more and more, unlike mugs or hoodies or signs, so as long as you can come up with great designs and draw in the t-shirt loving customers, you're in business!

I think tote bags are great too. Where I live, single use bags (plastic and paper) are banned in many areas. I think this trend will be happening in more places for environmental concerns. We have dozens of tote bags because we have no other choice. When we go grocery shopping one tote is never enough. I know families where the couple each have their own car and keep a stack in each car. Also great to use for going to the beach or for bringing snacks to kids sports, ect. Tote bags are the type of thing you easily accumulate since they get lost in the mess of your trunk and closets and they go through wear and tear, so people buy more. Anyway, if you're not selling only totes you should at least be offering your t shirt designs also on totes. It's the same dimensions, really, so it's a missed opportunity if you don't, imo.

This is a truly insightful video. Thanks for making it Shimmy. I'm actually quite surprised that I haven't come across similar videos. Most youtubers in the POD space love to talk about what POD service you should use, where to sell, etc. But the kind of merch you want to sell is really important, and I never thought about the things you said before seeing this.

My husband has SO MANY t-shirts, maybe even TOO many! I told him that whenever he brings home one new T, he has to get rid of TWO. I do the laundry, fold and put away. I ran out of room for all his Ts and ended up stacking them on the blanket chest until he thinned out his collection so they'd all fit in the drawers.

Good video. I'm able to print white tees at home with my current set up but I'm looking to expand into colours with a POD company in UK. I used to print with vinyl on coloured tees but I think vinyl looks poor in comparison to other print methods that are available now. My worry is the issue with returns regarding sizing issues and other factors. Examples could be the printed design not being the correct size when compared to that on the mock up. In some cases prints are not positioned correctly, ie too low or too high or not central. I like to have control over where exactly I position my prints. I feel quality control might be something that is overlooked in some cases. Have you experienced these issues?

Issue with T-Shirts is the saturated markets. Not everyone can set up a shopify and make the site, drive ads, do socials etc, Amazon is almost impossible to get into which leaves eBay and Etsy where the margins are rubbish. SO suggesting t-shirts to newbies .... not so sure.

  • @shimmymorris1

I don't understand... if you can't sell t-shirts, why would you be able to sell mugs, posters etc... Most people can set up a shopify. it's not that it's difficult, it's just time consuming. But I think following steps makes it easier. If anything, t-shirts is the perfect product for newbies... every single platform offers t-shirts. Also, the margins aren't rubbish on Etsy...

@shimmymorris1 wall art is one of the top searched-for terms on Etsy, month after month! T shirt is not. As for metal signs and other high-margin products, you're typically selling to a passionate niche. They might not buy another sign but they'll buy one of your other niche products. So you don't have to worry about repeat purchases of the same product. The other thing about Etsy is that it's big on gifts, which is why they introduced gift mode. Mugs make great inexpensive gifts, and let's face it, the world loves coffee!

Tees have such low profit margins, are susceptible for refunds and returns due to wrong sizing, material quality preference of customers, faded printing after washing, etc. etc, and overall just not my thing due to the potential headaches with customers. Remember, it takes just as much time and effort to make a high profit item as it is to design and market for a low profit margin item. I do admit there are some PODers whom have made 1000s $$$ from selling just tees into the 6 figures - go figure!

Hey Shimmy. I appreciate your transparency and candidness. Very cool indeed! I really enjoy your channel, commentary, content and honesty. If I may ask, what is the best way to have a page within my website, perhaps titled Merch, whereby I can display whatever (say T-shirts and hoodies), so in essence, my shop/storefront is located within my website? Yet "under the hood" they get linked to wherever I'd like to send them, i.e., Shopify? I'm assuming this falls under the category "e-commerce"? Can you perhaps point me to a video where you may have covered this? I'd love to be able to have control over page design i.e., colours, models (wearing shirts) etc, so as it fits in with the design elements/concept of my website(s). Thanks in anticipation. Best regards to you ✨ Darren John Halifax, Esq 🇦🇺

Hi shimmy, thanks for the video! I have a question about niching down. I know we should strive for a low-competition niche. But starting I did my research and as a person with multiple interests, I gathered over 10+ Niches. How many designs do I need to have in each Niche for my store to pick up, I do wanna narrow them down, but I need to know which will make it, but don't wanna give up too early without putting in a decent amount of designs. So how many designs would you recommend per Niche? and if you were using Shopify, would you recommend creating a different site for each niche (exhausting)?

Now after all that and factoring in the ads you pay to get sales and the income tax you obviously have to pay too you can not tell me with a straight face this has a 71% profit margin, thats insane

Who on earth buys a t-shirt for 27 dollars???!!! And, does that even include shipping? Shimmy, I've always agreed with all that you say on your videos, plus your honesty and trustworthiness of which I respect and appreciate. But for this, I fervently disagree with you about high profit margins with tees. That is, selling them at a reasonable and digestible price in the teens - NOT at a whopping $27! The way you may be able to make decent cash is selling MANY of them - so it's a numbers game and selling 'high volume' . But just a tee here and a tee there, I don't believe you'll be retiring any time soon.

Thanks for the comment. And thanks for the support generally. Can I ask though what’s this based on. I only ask because I comfortably sell between 26.99 and 32.99. And to give some context. Today. 25th May. We’ve sold $919.15 worth of T-shirts. (Still an hour left till midnight) This is on an ad spend of $200. And product costs around $300. At this rate we would comfortably make $12,000 in profit per month. However, we’re growing. We’re not looking to stay still. So again, all my videos are based on my own personal experience. My own personal data. They’re not assumptions. If you watch some of Chris Heckmans videos you’ll see he does 4 figures a day with his T-shirt only stores price the same. So, again, can you share what this was based on? I’m genuinely curious

@@shimmymorris1 I really appreciate you taking the time to reply at length Pal. Well in answer to your question, I guess just the countless of sellers from both tenured to beginners on multiple groups, forums and platforms - all complaining and exhausted with the low margins of tees vs the time, money and effort designing and marketing them. If it was just a few, I'd take it with a grain of salt. But the shear volume of complaints from various demographics, to me at least, conveys legitimacy. That's all I have to go on except the multitude of low numbers (cost vs. profit) they've posted to support their claims, and yes, I have no hard cold facts. But I would imagine with vast number of people turning to higher priced items should be a valid sign, no? I am a part of Chris' community, (the guy goes into sooooo much more intricate details compared to any other I've seen on the 'net - especially when to comes to what I call all of the 'behind the scenes' info). I'm very well aware of what mega profitable results of his t-shirt biz he's acquired. So I'd say he's perhaps an exception to the rule. Possibly due to his acute finely honed marketing skills, vast knowledge of how to tweak, modify, and continually expand/improve upon what he's already established. But will always continue to follow you Buddy, regardless of my opinion of this particular video, as I'm very selective of who I pay attention to in the whole POD industry.

Ye it’s very normal to find selllers struggling in this business. On various groups sellers do complain about low margins or low sales. I would say it’s mainly because they don’t realise how hard this business in. Maybe they’ve watched someone on KZread and have the wrong idea about print on demand. Others maybe sell on Redbubble, teepublic or Amazon where the margins for T-shirts are insanely low. I think if done right there’s no reason why margins have to be low. This store I set up in January is less than 6 months old. No one had complained about the prices. It isn’t affected my conversion rates at all etc. I think pod has a lot of misconceptions because people go into it thinking it’ll be easy money and then realise it’s actually quite tough.

@@shimmymorris1 Really do indeed appreciate your time replying at length Shimmy - truly! I certainly respect you and the fact that you're having success with the tees. And, if nobody has complained about such prices, then hell, a huge kudos for creating something that evidently people are willing to pay that price. Yes it is indeed hard, but since it's in an industry that involves creativity, design, and marketing - the former two I'm very comfortable and innately adept with, and the latter is somewhat so-so/acceptable, but could be much better, I will stick to it no matter the pitfalls and any failures that may come my way due to the rewards being so potentially gratifying. You're awesome for showing so much interest explaining yourself at length, and maybe.....just maybe, I'll stick my toe in the sea of tees to see if I would potentially tap into anything that you and Chris have done successfully. That in of itself is enough incentive! Thanks so much again Buddy! :)
