    It was worth the time spent creating this video, Shimmy. You give a clear and broad look at something as complex as what sells in a design. One of those videos that I can watch over and over again to refine the creation of my next designs. Great content as always. Don't worry, 100,000 followers are almost there.

    First time I’ve heard someone recommend flat lays instead of human models for mockups - I agree that it looks better on the flat lays but I’ve heard people are more drawn to the human mock ups. Just curious if you saw more successful listings with flat lays or if the flat lays just visually looked better

  • @shimmymorris1

    wayyyyy more successful designs when using flat lays. The main issue with models is they take away from the main focal point of the mockup which is the design. You don't want to distract a potential buyer, you want to lead them straight to the design so they buy

    @@shimmymorris1 Well, you cited the focus being on the model as one of the big drawbacks of model mockups. But when you're setting up your listing in Etsy, there's an option to adjust the mockup thumbnail, which is what shows up on the main search page. So common advice / arguably best practices is to zoom in so that the shirt nearly fills the thumbnail canvas, but then when people click into your listing, they see they full-size / uncropped mockup. Hope that makes sense.

    Thank you Shimmy for this very useful overview and for all your tutiruals. Interesting that you suggest not using model mockups as it detracts from the design, whilst many Etsy tutots state the very opposite saying that potential customers want and need to visualise how the design looks in real-time. I guess you can only go by what you've analysed and the data associated with that.

    Great video, Shimmy! I have a question, and I'm not sure you've covered it on your channel. How do you handle sales tax through Shopify? Is that handled by Shopify? Or are you responsible for it? And what about sales that are made in the US or other countries? I'm on Etsy now, and they currently handle the sales tax. But at some point, I want to move to Shopify. Thank you so much!

    So Shimmy one question, most of POD gurus say follow only one niche for multiple products type or only one product type with various niches. But your design predicts various niches, so market place where selling products won't get confused what i am trying to sell or attract the trageted customers through organic traffic? As i am planning to open etsy pod by using 6 product types with focusing on 3type of niches at the beginning. Kindly suggest whether i am good to go with this thought or follow only the pod gurus .

  • @shimmymorris1

    @shimmymorris1

    It depends on the platform really. I really only recommend T-shirts although other products can work. With Etsy I would suggest multiple niches and organise with etsy categories.

    Thanks for a great video! Very informative! On the last point, you say you should never use a mockup on a model as your main thumbnail. On Etsy, 95% of all the thumbnails have a model. In my humble opinion, the ones without look cheap and lazy, and I have lower expectations for it to be a quality product with good customer service. Could you help clarify this point?

  • @shimmymorris1

    @shimmymorris1

    Funnily enough every mockup on Etsy that’s the main image that has a model goes against their T&Cs… so be careful. Also surprisingly it’s not 95%. On first glance it may look like that. But when you dig deeper and start looking at tens of thousands of Etsy listings. You’ll realise the vast majority that are actually performing well don’t include a model in their first mock up

Thank you so much shimmy, you're one of the few that are really awesome and authentic that i ever watched , keep it up !

  • @shimmymorris1

    It depends on the platform you sell on. Our profit on Shopify for 1 t-shirt is $17-$20. But then you have other costs and ads if you want to go down the ads route. We end up profiting about 30% so around the $8-$11 range

    I don't want to discount your analysis, but you didn't present any legitimate descriptive statistics to support your qualitative summary. You used a lot of generic terms and words like most, many, frequest without presenting how your categorical distictions and conclusions related to your population of designs. For someone who says they love analyzing data you didn't present any data or supported findings.
