The Best Place To Mount Your Fire Extinguisher | 4x4 Touring
If you like to take your 4wd camping into remote areas or even if you don't, having a fire extinguisher mounted in arms reach in your 4x4 could make a huge difference if the unthinkable does ever happen out in the outback, a fire.
After a few people mentioned that my fire extinguisher in my canopy camp kitchen is hard to access, so in this video we fix that problem with a awesome little product.
Check out Russell's fire extinguisher brackets at Kap Industries:

Word of advice I learned from an old timer that serviced extinguishers for decades...always mount them in a vehicle on the horizontal like this bracket does. If mounted in the vertical and just left and forgotten like so many people do, the contents will settle and pack in tightly from the constant vibration experienced in a vehicle. This can render an extinguisher useless when you really need it. It's also a good practice to remove the unit, hold it up to your ear and tip it end to end and listen for the contents to fall from end to end. If that occurs and the pressure guage is proper, you have a functional extinguisher.

I knew if I scrolled down far enough, someone would offer this sage advice. Fire extinguishers are specially treated baking soda and a CO2 cartridge to push it out the nozzle. Shake them every six months for a few minutes and never get that useless jet of CO2 when you need it.

I used to be a portable fire technician for 5 years doesn't really matter how you mount them, just self service your extinguisher every 6 months all you need to do is invert it and Tap it you will feel the content inside go loose and drop also check the pressure gauge and overall condition and your good to go👍 pressure test every 5 years or just simply replace them. As per the Australian standard 1851.
As someone who installs/inspects fire extinguishers I really like the bracket. Would like to see the extinguishers supplied with a hose to allow for access to tricky areas like engine bay etc.
Russell is lovin' you about right now.
I was at a gathering a month ago in Arizona. I look across the camp and noticed a whisp of black smoke coming out of a camper about 200 meters. By the time I realized what was happening - grabbed my readily accessible extinguisher and ran towards the rig - it was pretty much too late (not even close)! Vehicles with plenty of flammables inside get going real quick and burn to the ground with plenty of pops, groans, and explosions.
Thanks for sharing. After all that’s the whole point right? It’s about sharing information, tips and tricks in relation to the pass time/activity we all enjoy......Which sometimes involves a product 😱to recommend in order to easily execute said tip or trick. Why is it some people take offence and 👎at utubers doing a show n tell about a product to make our life easier, safer etc has got me stuffed. Isn’t that half the reason why we binge on the ol utube anyway? Im sure most of us can tell the difference between this little clip and a sponsored infomercial where you’ve sold your sole to the devil. Thanks again for taking the time and highlighting the fact that we need to keep these extinguishers more ready to hand 👍
Was just talking to the wife last night about getting an extinguisher for our Hilux. Ordered the bundle before the video was even finished. Cheers fellas

$110 is a great investment. Thanks mate👍👍👍
Awesome. Still have some prototype Russel Kapp custom brackets for my car (when he still lived here in WA.) Seeing this video makes me happy.
Have one in the cab one in the canopy, opposite sides in case of a roll over

Newport that’s actually a great idea. Wouldn’t have thought of that.
Just installed this in my NP300. Thanks @Seek Adventure! Best bracket and came all the way up to Cairns super quick 👍
Just ordered mine, cheers from NSW
Nice. I just have the bracket mine came with zip tied to the bar on the front of my passenger seat for adjusting the seat position. Works good. I've practiced pulling it out of its bracket. I also have a single latch on my fire extinguisher, which seems plenty solid, and easier to remove. I'd rather have a bracket like yours, but don't really want to spend that kind of money on it.
Great Video, I now have an extinguisher mounted via the KAP Industries’ mount! Great product. Cheers!
Proves a very good point! I have my tugged away behind the passenger seat in my Defender,... Will take me long to get to :-( I need a much better solution. Thanks for bringing this up!

Mine fits perfectly on the transmission tunnel between the gear stick and hand brake.
Just picked up my bracket today great idea thanks heaps to Russell who allowed me to collect at such short notice cheers mate
You are sure loving your timer lately haha
It's a great concept and not too bad a price for getting car specific ones - about 2 months ago I just tech screwed mine to the internal cross member in my 90 series I it's in exactly the same spot - works a treat! Good thing to remind people they need to carry an extinguisher . . . And make sure it's accessible - I carry 2 in my Prado 👌👍
That's brilliant. I imagine your old mate is reeling in the orders right about now.
I have a powder extinguisher mounted inside the back door (on the door itself), a large Halon extinguisher mounted on the back of the cubby box between the front seats, and another powder one that can be carried in a box or bag. They have to be very quickly accessible to be of any use.
Was looking for fire extinguisher mounting options and came across your video. I remember watching this when it came out. Miss seeing your regular videos. How all is well in WA.
Great video except it goes: On your marks... Get set... GO!! Keep it up mate 👏👏👏
Wondered why you looked familiar at Maccas a couple of days ago! Pleasure to meet you and like watching your 4wd videos!

Nice to meet you Stephen! 🙂
Just ordered two and a sticker even. Over the ditch to NZ. Cheers for the impulse buy 🤙🏻
A great little business Russell has going there. Good on him.
I spotted a brand new Nav NP300, tricked up to the hilt, probably never touched dirt, sand or rock. It had the tray door removed and the spare tyre mounted at an angle. Flanking that beautifully presented tyre were two, equally beautifully mounted fire extinguishers. I could only assume that the driver puts his beloved rig through so much hell (driving to work and the shops) that he needs quick recourse when his engine goes up in flames (?).
You're the Bee's Knees for offroading video's.
Just purchased one what a great idea! nice vid young fella.
Thank you mate for this great item,I purchased 2 of these for my BT a few years ago ,they are awesome pce of kit
Nice you use that system. This is a standard system used in Brazil. It comes from factory because is mandatory.
Really good idea. I think your test also raises the question as to whether the small extinguishers are big enough. I have a 2.5kg in my BT.

About 25 years ago I had this discussion with a fire safety expert. Except we were talking about boats. He explained to me, that he often gets asked how big of a fire extinguisher one should get and his answer was always the same: "How big is the fire that you plan to put out?" On a boat that is a very sobering question. Sure made me think about it. In a car (depending where you are) it's not so big of a deal. You can always step out of the car and watch it burn to the ground.
Nice bit of kit. Good idea, hope he does well. Good review.
great vid mate, refreshes me that i need to get a fire extinguisher and this sounds like one of the best ways to do it
One in my trailer near the exit. One LARGE one in my tow vehicle. One in my boat (when I had one) near the steering wheel, away from the gas tank and outboard motor.
Very smart idea. Have shared on Facebook. Thanks for the information.
Great little bracket and set up micheal if your up side down and the car catches on fire bit hard to get out and use it if its in the back but right at ure seat AWESOME will the set move forward great vid as always
Great idea, just ordered one of the brackets.
Brilliant idea, currently have mine sitting on the rear floor as couldn’t find a place to mount without causing a protrusion.
Great video ,I doubt if he would have one for my LDV . Looks like a great idea ,I will share it around..All the best with it.
Got mine and fitted it. I reckon we smashed up ol' Russell's website though hehe
Keep going mate. You're doing a great job!
Takes up The space where my thongs sit lol.
wow ,,,what a ball-tearer idea,,,first time I've ever seen a vid on day posting too !!!!
Thank you Michael, A great solotion i will order one and ask your mate to fabricate a bracket to fit a bigger fe on the wheel carrier of our 200.
The other possible issue with the extinguisher being in the canopy is what if the fire is caused by the electrical in the canopy or the fridge? Love that bracket 😁👍
Where do i put my thongs now? might need to mount it under the passenger seat, still pretty close

Those brackets look good to go. I've been thinking of where to mount mine as I plan to have at least 2 in the future (one in the cab & one in the canopy when I get it). Centrally, able to be accessed from either side and easy to identify (if it's not me grabbing the extinguisher).
I keep forgetting to buy a Extinguisher but thought this was a great idea so have jist purchased on off kap and saves the idea I had of drilling into my floor pan on my colorado . I now live in perth and came from nsw & so far don't mind it here but certinaly miss the lushness of coffs harbour
That was awesome. Thanks for the idea mate, never thought about that. Sorry for my bad english

Absolutely love your content mate. Keep the videos coming at us. I wish I could do a trip with you through the outback.
I hope Russell is taking care of you. Free Fire Extinguishers for Life. :D
I have a mount like that but by another co. in my WRX and having the extinguisher right under the passenger seat is perfect as it never gets in the driver's way but is right there should you need it. I want one for my Frontier. I looked at Kap but its for left side only. Thats the driver side here and I don't care for that option. I may have to send a request for us non-right side drivers.
@kirkc9643

Yeah I wouldn't be having it on the drivers side. It would get in the way, especially on long drives.
Great idea thanks for sharing I think I will look into one for the Troopy.
I'm surprised u weren't bogged....lol...great vid, top bracket
Not australlian, but i have my extinguisher in the boot and it's on the furnishings strappef with velcro. Best place, because it's out of sight but easily accesible.
I only buy from Tasmanian fire service, i have a easy reach 1kg (driverside door pocket) 1.5kg Mounted easy reach rear passenger one, plus a bigger 2.5kg in the rear of the cargo area. I know 3 fire Extinguishers seems a bit over board but at least i have enough to try and stop a large ish vehicle fire. Not to mention passengers also having access to one incase the driver is unable to use there's is a good idea too. And plus if one should fail i know i have another to use.
Hey.. great idea. However, from experience in mining utes. With the top facing the door.. over time, your feet will continue kicking the gauge, pin.. Best to turn around? Cheers! NB. Not sure if you're still posting videos. Hope you are!!!
What do you do for a job other than KZread??

The fly on the lip at 5:15 was a bit distracting... hahahaaa
Very useful and practical advice. Ta.
One small suggestion, 180 that bracket so the handle won't get kicked when going in and out of the vehicle.
One thing a lot of people may not be aware of, if you have a fire in the engine bay, one of those small extinguishers may not be enough to put it out.
@IanSR1970

Yep! Only 10 to 12 seconds for a 1kg dry powder extinguisher. Don't lift up the hood (until you believe the fire is out) as it will oxygenate the fire making it harder to extinguish, & may cause serious burn injuries. Pull the hood release & spray between the gap created 🔥🧯

But if you travel in a group, and everyone has one, you may stand a better chance
great idea! Ordered one
Nice piece mate. Thanks.
How good is that. Russel is very, no wonder he moved to the East Coast.
good tips!
Damn, no listings for my 80 series or Supra :(
How about this : For your own vehicle you have a FIRE STRYCER in your cab, not bulky and much better then a powder extinguisher since No residuals and small sized. For you mates you keep a bulky powder extinguisher out side locked and count the +10sec you need more to get it as a loss. Cheers mate
This is the best spot to put them, they're typically mounted like this to the passenger seat of trucks. Only thing you need to worry about is if the pin falls out you will end up with a floor full of powder.
@GutterRatKnives
4 жыл бұрын
A bit of masking tape will keep the pin secured but won't prevent you from pulling the pin out when required. Either that or slightly bend the pin on the opposite side to the ring to prevent it vibrating out.
mines been in that spot for years courtesy of zip ties, nothing for pre 05 hiluxes there anyhow
Great product
Doesn't it get in the way of your feet?
I'm starting to think that the fly is a pet.
I got that very bracket in my BT too!!
After you get your extinguisher out of the bracket just remember TPASS - Twist, Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep.

Yeah the sweeping motion at the base of the fire is where it's at
He should given you a coupon code because mate his sales will boom because of this!
lol like the new t shirts what on the back of it Michael ? so KAP bracket extinguisher bracket and extinguisher with locator sticker for $110 bucks?? not bad
Ordered mine thanks for that
We had an engine fire on the mighty Range Rover and despite the fire extinguisher being in the green zone on the dial the retardant just dribbled out .SAD . Lucky we had a new one in camper trailer which solved the problem so pays to check how old the extinguisher is .
Nice Micheal
If you search Orcish traction boards on amazon the seller is using screenshots from your max tracks vs xbull video to advertise their product
Hi Michael, Great video demo and explanation of Russel's product/s. People sometimes have a go at making their own mounting bracket etc, but considering the design quality and cost, I think he's hit on a great niche market. Any idea whereabouts he is over here?. I'm in Coffs Harbour NSW. I was almost expecting to see you snap off that key!. :)
Nice bracket but they should go on the passenger side as they can fall out and stop you from using the pedals but a fantastic bracket
@SeekAdventure
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, they can be mounted on the driver or passenger side, whichever you prefer 😊
But... If the car is locked (ok, who locks cars when camping//) and you are cooking under the awning a second extinguisher in/under the canopy is a good idea.. Plus you get 2 shots if needed.. It's a bit like a spare type, one is good, 2 means you can "keep on 4-wheeling with no fear."
@ Seek Adventure: Awesome Content! Absolutely Love your videos, they are so inspiring. I am curious...What kind of video/audio equipment do you use? The quality is amazing
How big was the extinguisher? 1 or 2kg.
This is a sweet setup. Too good to pass up. Ordered
Great job 👍
Hi, that is a great looking hat, what style is that from Akubra. Is it a golden spur.
Thank you.
Like the idea, but I would rather install the extinguisher the opposite direction (towards gearbox) as I'm afraid I'd hit the pin with my foot and stir up a toxic fog in my truck seconds later.

Yeah i saw that issue too, Tas fire service in tassie here, did not recommend it under or in front of the driver seat, as there is a risk your brackets may fail and cause the fire extinguisher to roll into your pedals. i will STRESS that some of these extinguishers have very cheap thin brackets hence the comment.
The link provided in the description is wrong
That's a thumbs up within 19 sec. Makes ya think.
I made one for my car and it cost me $20 in steel bolts and paint
Just want to make note that you should do a sweeping spray pattern.
Any for Dodge ram
Hi just fitted the fire extinguisher, disappointed in the costly bracket, my experience is that the bracket was not made to securely fit to the seat bolts, I had to purchase large washers to have a snug fit. Rating poor. Sorry...I really enjoy your utube....
little tip why not link in the description??
Does it prevent you from moving the seat at all?
I enjoy your video clips, well done, and the humor you add. But I think you need a far more dynamic voice saying "Seek Adventure"
not possible to order with a suzuki jimny :( nice vid thx
