Vehicle Fire Extinguishers: What Type is Best/Ways to Mount/How to Use

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you drive offroad or explore remote areas, a fire extinguisher is a must! We explain the best places to mount a fire extinguisher, two within arm’s reach. What class extinguisher to use for what type of fire. Merri will demonstrate the proper way to put out a small fire. And we run a time trail for putting out an engine fire, between extinguishers mounted within arm’s reach of the driver and one stored in the rear.
We have two extinguishers mounted in our overland vehicle. For fires under the hood we have a BC rated 2.5# HalGuard unit from H3R Performance. We mounted it using a universal front seat extinguisher mount. Another option we show is having it mounted on a molle seatback panel from Grey Man Tactical. For both we used an Extreme Duty Mounting Bracket. For common campsite fires we use the MaxOut ABC extinguisher mounted in the rear cargo area.

Great video. My brother who is a firefighter told me to PUT ON LEATHER GLOVES, pop the hood, give some short (not micro) bursts all around under the hood to create a blanket, AND THEN, open the hood with finger on trigger.

Nicely done, I had aviation firefighting training with the Navy and also had a house fire that almost took our babies life. I'm an absolute believer in fire extinguishers and knowing how and when to use them. Thank you for posting this!

Great Video: I bought the whole complete setup with extinguisher/Quick detach/separate mount to put on the passenger seat and it worked awesome .... that is until my wife got in and tried to move the seat forward about 6 inches! It broke the SEAL on the pin and the pin FELL OUT, and we ALMOST had an extinguisher accident ............ I thought I had calculated the proper distance, but on a long distance journey she moves the seat back and forth to different locations, such as when I am "night" driving, she moves it forward and then reclines the seat to sleep. During the day she slides the seat as far back as possible so she can relax and read. I have tried to somehow mount it so it moves with the set instead of mounted solid, but I have since removed it and will try and find some area in the back. Your second option behind the passenger seat is GREAT, but our seats are mostly DOWN as the back is packed with all the rest of our gear. I will try and mount on the REAR Window Molle, but of course that has stuff that will interfere as well. These are the FUN times on figuring out WHERE to put all the goodies. Again: Thanks for the great video and ideas.

Just a note, when I opened the hood that fed lots of air draft to the fire. You're better off just cracking the hood open an inch or two, and start discharging the extinguisher before you open it any further.

Fuses, fuses, fuses. People rewire without them or use fuses that don't protect the wiring. And fuel line fires are real. Almost had one myself as a result of a front brake fire. The fuel line was routed directly above the hub/caliper. Great vid.

Well, I see my guess a couple of weeks ago on the fire extinguishers I saw on the bench was correct. I have set up my 4Runner in the same manner with a MaxOut on the panel in the rear and the HalGuard in front of the driver's seat. One comment - I've been trained to release (pop) the hood and spray first through the opening before opening it all the way. I did notice Merri was ducking and counting before engaging the fire. Another fantastic video. Thanks for all the great content!

Great video! I just went through fire extinguisher training work, and all your descriptions were spot-on to what were trained. Quite a big time difference having the fire extinguisher at hand, and actually it should have been an even greater difference, having the rear swingouts already open were a big time-saver. I'm just starting to outfit my 4Runner now, so I'll definitely look into these companies that you mentioned.

The most important part of any emergency is to get away from it. Expensive rigs can be fixed or replaced. If you have decided to fight the fire be prepared and fight smart. Watching the rig burn is better than being burned. I mount my quick release extinguishers to the roof rack and bumpers.

First let m congratulate you for having quality extinguishers Amerex and Sentry are two of the best made. I see so many yachts and very expensive RVs with the trash one you showed, it makes zero sense to have garbage cheap safety equipment wether it’s a huge investment or not. I don’t know of any extinguisher that will ruin or even damage paint (fire extinguisher service vehicles aren’t destroyed by extinguisher agents), corrosive not really it does melt and can be a real pain to clean. I love how clean Halon or Halatron is and great as you said for under the dash but it’s best used in a confined area as that other wise there’s not enough concentration, it’s not so good for outdoors, imagine shooting hair spray in a breeze the Halon/Halatron looks and acts in the same manner, it blows away. I was in the extinguisher business for decades.
