The BEST Old School Amtrak K5LAs
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
A sampling of some of the BEST old school Amtrak K5LAs in the days when horns were mounted up front and had manual horn valves. Most of these horns are from the original batch of K5LAs, which had a timbre and tuning that hasn't been beat. F40s, GP40TCs, and AEM-7s!

@@dlane5292 Yes! Just guessing but about 95% of the CSX freight locomotives I hear and see have K5LLA horns. However, once in a while I'm pleasantly surprised when I hear one with an old school K5LA as it brings back fond memories from years gone by.

In 1996 I lived in NJ, near the central station, man it was nice to step into the backyard and hear this kind of beauty. 😌

Wow that makes me jealous, I can picture that image
Amtrak's FL9s were also retrofitted with K5LAs after their original Hancock air whistles were removed, and some of the clips you can find of them in use is absolutely stunning.

Well, for one thing, today's K5LAs on Amtrak are almost always placed behind the exhaust stack, which causes the exhaust to distort and foul them. This is because engineers complained of the noise. Also, third-generation K5LAs are tuned to meet the FRAs increasingly-ridiculous regulations.

BNSF1995 That's only for Full Covered Body Frame locomotives. Like the F40PH, the F59PHI, and it is the same with other F59PH's.

Milepost 282 Productions Interestingly enough, today's Nathan MicroProcision K5LAs aka 3rd gen K5LAs are actually tuned to play the original chords that the K5LA was originally designed to play from the getgo.

BNSF1995 The 3rd gen, or MP, or Raised Letter K5LAs are plenty loud in person. I believe the FRA failed at that measure. Thankfully
Lovely K5LAs
I see you caught one of the GP40TC's, nice catch :D
Wow I remember taking Amtrak from Florida to Philadelphia as a kid this brings back memories of those horns it's nice to hear them again 😊
Sweetest sound horns! Ironically, because they were so loud and clear sounding, railroads with them have been gradually replacing them with the newer versions which are deliberately dischorded, including the K5LLa.

I read that the K5LLA came out in response to a regulation for a lower fuckin decibel rating for train horns. My guess is that they fuckin lowered the one fuckin bell to give the horn a bit lower pitch to compensate for a lower decibel.
The k5la is a very beautiful horn
Wow, that was good, it brings back memories… I miss the F40-PH
I wish those old engines were still in service like FP7A
Very upbeat and happy sounding.
0:53 Well, hello again future Maine Eastern 488! That's the third time this week it's popped up unexpectedly for me in an Amtrak video! Go figure. Looks like it's being hauled off for maintenance again too... You know, I'm starting to get the impression 488 has a history of mechanical problems.
Even though I was born in 98', I still get a real sense of nostalgia alone just from the the Doppler effect. Really makes me wish I was born earlier just to live in the 90s and see all these genuine Amtrak trains. Not to see all these charger units and k5hl bullshit
great sounds!
all the way with the Nathan K5LA the queen of all train horns
Those beautiful K5LAs are the best!
The P40DCs also had their own batch.
Man those F40phs are some of my favorite Units 3rd to the acs-64 e60 and and the aem - 7
I love the old amtrak horns these are some old videos
Fantastic
Your back
This is how k5las became famous 😊
GRAND TONE!
That gp40tc in the first clip sounded good.
I like the one that emerges from the fog
Is this in New York?
OK BACK THEN CAMERA VOLUME USED TO BE VERY LOUD
Is there anyway to make a k5 from today into one like this matt?
0:14 sound too good :) makes me tearrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr a bit :)
I just recently watched the Amtrak youtube video on train horns. Was that you hosting it?
Amazing 4:21
That one clip where a GP40TC is pulling a FL9
I like the P5A’s on the F40PH rather than K5LA!
@mdamttc199 Nice vid! Anymore footage of AEM-7 horns?
