Engines of Amtrak - EMD GP40TC

Special thanks to The Winnipeg Railfan for helping narrate! ( / @thewinnipegrailfan )
Amtrak is usually known for their carbody locomotives, a staple of passenger trains in the US. Amtrak is also, more notoriously, known for their freight locomotives converted into passenger specifications. The GP40TC was one of those, luckily though, it was far more successful than some of its early counterparts. But how exactly has this Canadian locomotive stayed on the rails for over 50 years now? Find out in this episode of Engines of Amtrak!

Fun thing: My school bus in the morning runs right alongside 150mph NEC tracks (like feet away), and one foggy morning an engine like this (presumably one of these, a switcher/work train engine of some sort) came flying by southbound (coming out of the Providence yard presumably) by itself. Didn't catch a number, has always been fairly mysterious to me.

Possibility being transferred from yard to yard, but I’m not sure why it would be going at that speed. Idk maybe the engineer wanted to have some fun

This Copyright crap needs to calm down, people now need to get a approval or alter their video's. I enjoyed the old video about this locomotive, great story!

you do know they do that too avoid suspicion of people stealing shit right? They require people to ask permission or pay for the rights to use their content because this isn't the early days of the internet anymore. Content stealing is rampant and they have too protect their content however they can

I like how when Jared starts narrating again the music changed to his more calm and peaceful music from The Winnipeg Railfan’s chaotic trumpet music

Also on 5:53, #650-664 was used on Amtrak's GP40s back in the early 1990s. When they returned to Helm Leasing in the late 1990s, Amtrak reused the same numbering on their HHP-8s until ACS-64s came in 2014, and they were retired.

I literally have an ad to the side for Trackmobiles. This is nice. Also, I think these new “Engines of Amtrak” videos are slightly better than the original.
Please remind me why it is apparently advantageous to drop 1000 horsepower and remove the turbocharger, and what horn they used? Great video as always, my unknown friend.
@Vixen1525
Жыл бұрын
Maybe because more HP is not needed, and a turbocharger is another part that can fail easily. In general more HP does not add more power in certain uses. It really depends on other factors aswell. But that is just what came up to my mind.

@Carlos The gaming railfan oh hi there
Good Video I’m sad you had to upload it seriously what’s with the copyright
People complain the HEP unit makes a whining noise. Of course it does. It’s a freaking 2 stroke Detroit diesel revving it’s guts out. And when the blower and turbos of 2 stroke Detroits reach a certain speed they create a harmonic whine.
It's sad the og video got taken down, but still a cool video!
I really like The Winnipeg Railfan's cameo in this.
you are the reason i can’t tell people about my interest in this hobby

oh a reupload.. i was wondering why I had already seen this
What portion of the video had to be cut out and replaced?
Those Locos look Cool!
So regarding the gp-40s Amtrak bought, they were backups for the dash 8 which was a backup the for Genesis. So that means the backup had a backup, lol
This was a actually uploaded in August but due to KZread's shity copyright , this was taken down.
I have seen the Acela Express video unlisted, are you planning on doing a reupload/update to that video?
Well at least we got Engines of go transit now..
I Loved These GP40TC’s. *DISCLAIMER* These Are Not The GP40-2 Freight Engines. But It’s A 40TC An Oldie
Correction: Amtrak leased 15 GP40s from helm leasing, not 11.
The southeast Florida commuter railroad tri county rail tri rail for short started out using former GO equipment and had some M.K locomotive rebuilds when first being operated all tri rail rolling stock retained there GO color's and markings one of these types of GO locomotives was used for the tri rail startup.

Nice!
The Animating attracted Me.
9:20 I’m ready to watch the F40PH, but make sure that you put the Ex-Amtrak 370, 382, 308, and 310 were acquired to Metro-North in 2000. And as well as the Ex-Amtrak 270, 274, 293, 302, 311, and 400 were leased to NJ Transit from Railworld

the description exist
Note that while EMD built them, they were NOT built in the US - they were built in the EMD London, Ontario plant. (EMD was not the only part of GM that had a plant in London - there were two other GM plants there - one being a twin of the most famous GM auto plant that did NOT build Corvettes - Lordstown, Ohio - which built Camaros and Firebirds - including Trans-Ams. The other was for GM Truck and Coach - also known as GMC - in the Coach case, I am referring to buses - transit buses in particular. Like EMD, a surprising amount of GM Canada's Coach product found itself in the US - among the customers were New York City's MTA, SEPTA, and first DC Transit, and later successor WMATA. However, not even the surprisingly-successful transit bus business saved GM Coach - in either the US or Canada; basically the same thing that happened to EMD - the businesses were spun out and sold.) I know about the transit buses because I rode some of them in WMATA and ex-DC Transit (acquired by WMATA) in 1976 and 1977 - in the tailchase of their careers with the transit authority. Built in Canada, but inspected at the then-home of Team Suburban - Baltimore, Maryland. (In addition to being the assembly line for all Suburbans, the heavy-duty C/K pickups - in both Chevrolet and GMC branding - for the eastern US were built in Baltimore until the tailchase of the Clinton administration. However, the success of the Suburban did not save GM Baltimore from the bean-counters. (We ALL know *why* the Suburban was successful - in both Chevrolet AND GMC branding it could carry large loads, tow large loads, or both. It wasn't JUST the Secret Service that purchased and/or leased the beasts of burden - so did military installations and law enforcement; an even dozen wound up in the Maryland State Police.)
