The Best of Sammy Davis Jr. Live in the 80s!

Музыка

Sammy Davis Jr. had a career resurgence of sorts in the 1980s. He got off of drugs, stopped drinking and straightened his life out, and as a result his live shows became his best since the 1960s! His energy increased, and his voice became the best it had ever been, especially towards the end.
In this video, I've compiled 2 hours worth of my favorite performances from my archives of 80s Sammy concerts to share with you all. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.

Lovely to read Peter Anderson's story about Sammy. I am so envious I have adored him all my life, having discovered him at 16 years old. People used to say to me why Sammy . My reply was Yeah I like the Stones, Led Zep etc but no-one can hold a candle to Sammy Davis Jr. They thought it was an odd choice for a 16 yr old. Guess what I haven't changed all these years later. He's still the greatest.😍

I was blessed to see Sammy live in concert several times in the 70s and 80s, and even when health issues intruded, he never disappointed. He always told the audience that he sang his best in heat. NOT THAT KIND OF HEAT, but in warm temperatures. He would sometimes ask the audience's indulgence and ask the management of whatever venue he was playing to turn down the air conditioning, He was right. As you can see in that Paris concert, although his shirt was drenched with sweat, he never sang better.

In my opinion he had a personal magnetism that was inviting. One that portrayed himself as loving humanity. Where he was open to receive combined with accepting and embracing diversity. Is this a fact? This I can state as a fact that his singing and performances I watched (*sigh* none of them for me were in live person) these nonetheless did give ME that sense of feeling. Was it just an act? I DON'T KNOW! Though in my "gut" I just feel he held a genuine soul that not only was willing, but moreso, he held the desire to explore the vast possibilities in with the company of all others who held the same openness and acceptance. Willing to share the gained insights of personal experience. Where the goodness of gain wasn't focused on sel Where the driving force came with the purpose of not mere survival but rather with the intention to thrive with others in a harmoniously manner.

Sammy was a force of nature & spirit and the talent was without equal. His version of "And This Is My Beloved" from Kismet is finest interpretation and performance ever done. I've listened to dozens of others from the original Broadway cast to everyone else who recorded it. Opera singers the top pop singers and no one catches the essence of the song or delivers the emotional content as Sammy did. That makes this performance in Paris when he was 60 not only the best but an event horizon or watershed moment. I'm stuneed by it and keep listening to it over and over because it is PERFECT. Rarely does it happen. He caught the magic of perfection in this performance. Bravo.

I asked her how the show was & she told me when it was finished she told her lady friends, "I have no idea who this kid is but we have to keep an eye out for him. I miss this man so very much. He was a friend of mine, and I thank you for making these videos available. They are priceless. In the 1980's, I was a daily columnist for The Sacramento Union. Life in Sacramento in those days was very dull, so I asked Harrah's Club at Lake Tahoe if they would like someone to review some of their shows. I was surprised that a major paper so close to Tahoe did not have regular entertainment reviewer, so Harrah's was very happy to have me come up from time to time to review the shows. My first big-time review was Sammy. We hit it off instantly. After the first meeting, his manager Murphy Bennett would call me whenever they would be coming back to the resort. We met probably eight times. The interview always took place in the penthouse "Stars' Suite" atop Harrah's, then I'd go to the dinner show, and be invited backstage afterwards for another less formal interview. I was able to bring my wife at the time to meet him, as well. The times we spoke and laughed and "giggled," as he liked to call it, are precious memories for me. In the mid-80's, he was having a hard time quitting drinking. I told him I had recently quit and would be happy to help him. We worked together on this, and he was soon able to stop altogether. But the cigarettes were something else. There was always a big bowl of Pall-Malls on his coffee table, and this was one habit he just could not beat. The cigarettes were what finally got him . I have to tell you this is one of the most fascinating people I have ever met. I absolutely cherish my time with him and Murphy Bennett, and I was heartboken the day he died. I never took my friendship with him for granted. Before he died, we had talked about collaborating on a cook book together that would be aimed at people trying trying to quit booze. We were going to call it "Booze Blues." And then he died. It always fascinated me that wherever he went, he brought this huge chest filled with cooking utensils with him -- and Harrah's had its own five-star restaurant! I come on KZread many times to replay these classic songs and to rekindle my memories with my pal Sammy. Thank you again to whomever is making these posts.......Peter Anderson

His generation of singers and musicians changed the way audiences thought about and treated black performers. Lots of folks eventually figured out that they really did not want to be segregated from people like him and Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt etc. It started to seem obvious. Any barrier between that kind of talent and a white audience, just had to be overcome for everyone's own benefit. When he started in show business, many white people were nervous about what might rub off with intimate contact, by the time he was 35, many of the same people prayed some of that brilliance just might!

Sammys best singing was in the late 60's and early 70's......all the smoking and drugs....took their toll like they do to all people..especially performers who are in the public eye.....but of course even Sammy past his peak...is better than most....

Richard guthrie, correction, sammy was the best singer and the greatest entertainer that ever lived.correction again.it was very, very, very, very rare that sammy would joke around when singing a ballad.watch on youtube his version of old man river, what kind of fool am i,ive gotta be me,mmedley of hey there and this is my beloved, medley from porgy and bess, the song fr9m phantom of the opera,im not anyone, anthony newley medley.sammy was a true perfectionist who took his performing seriously.theres not one song i can ever remember, where he didnt sing a song properly.i would love for you to mention any song he didnt sing properly.also sammy loved to joke with his audience.its called having a rapport with them.please send me any song you felt he didnt sing properly, and when he joked too much.i would have to witness proof.sammy had more talent than 10 performers combined.be safe.

I disagree with Richard on two counts. He was not just agood singer; he was up there with the best interpreters of these songs. Secondly, he rarely joked in his song and if he did it was a good joke and therefore worth it. He revered the music and the lyrics. On this video collection, Sammy, sings Erik’s main song from the Phantom of the Opera. I had never heard Sammy’s version before and it is a little away from his normal jazz idiom. But it is the best version I have ever heard demonstrating his talent as an interpreter of lyrics.

What a stupid comment, if you had actually bothered looking at the performances on the vid you are talking about you would see he concentrates on delivering the performance of the song, and not "joking around" and is singing it properly from start to finish.
