People rightly marvel at Lomu's extraordinary combination of pace, strength and size but the really amazing thing imho was that he wasn't just a bulldozing winger - he also had great finesse with his footwork and balance. That gave him the option to beat defenders with a step or a body swerve that would normally be used by smaller wingers such as Shane Williams or Cheslin Kolbe.

For those NFL fans that have doubts about this man's ability to make it your sport, just see all of the Tongans and Samoans in the league now. And there are many Tongans and Samoans playing rugby league and union all over the world too. Over the last 20 years since he first came on to the scene, NONE have had as much as impact as Jonah. Great video and a super tune to go with it! Kia Kaha big man.

Rugby players work bloody hard just to wear their country's shirt. All Blacks is a huge thing here in NZ and getting to wear those legendary black shirts is what all school boys across the nation want to do when they're older. They pride themselves in one day playing for that team. Like how SBW turned down Australia's top dollars just to play for the All Blacks. It's one thing that made me respect so many rugby players.

You guys comparing Jonah to NFL players are missing the point - it was Jonah's ability to stand in the tackle that made him so dangerous - as long as he kept his legs pumping, people couldn't hold onto him. I don't think the NFL has much demand for that kind of skill set as a result of how the game works, although I'm sure that a few of the bigger guys would be able to do it as well without the padding, etc. But when you combine that with being able to run through a gap, even if it wasn't quite big enough, and to get on the outside of almost anyone, Jonah stood alone. We haven't seen anyone like him since and probably never will.

Don't know much about rugby but saw the documentary on Lomu and was very impressed. At 275 lbs with his speed, quickness, and determination I'm sure he could have been very successful in the NFL. The one difference I see is that rugby players often receive the ball on the dead run while running backs in the NFL usually get only a few steps to pick up speed.

The most monumental player in rugby ever. What i find truly amazing about Jonah is this: people today say that Jonah was "before his time" (and rightly so, he was, by about 20 years) and that there are more players like him around these days in the modern game (wingers that are at least as big, s strong and as quick) but the reality is, Jonah would step up to play against ANY modern team and go against any player in the world today, and they'd still be traumatised by him. Amazing and unique. RIP big guy x

+Mark Johnson Well Jonah Lomu was 6 feet 5 inches and 266 pounds and ran the 100 metres in 10.8 seconds. The only area of contention would he have been able to catch a football slung from 40 to 50 yards at high speed. One on one with a corner back like Deon Sanders, Sanders would have lost every confrontation. Every single one! The greatest corner back ever in the NFL(not saying it's sanders, just an example) would have lost one on one with Lomu, every single time! He wouldn't win one confrontation. To be fair, no rugby player ever won a confrontation one on one with him.

The biggest differences are: NFL far more explosive but a lot more recovery time is allocated from huge gaps between plays to changing your whole team (offensive / defensive) depending on whether you have possession of the ball or not. Rugby there are very few short breaks in play and all players are expected to play both offensive and defensive positions throughout the whole match. 2x 40 minute of continuous play. Basically it's stamina vs explosive power, difficult to compare.

Mark, I too am in a rugby-deprived area of the USA (thank goodness for KZread), and I urge you to learn more and watch the game. In very general terms, rugby players are divided between forwards and backs. Forwards are big and strong and not necessarily fast or able to sprint 100 meters without hurting something. Backs are fast and agile and usually not big. The fastest and most agile are usually wingers, the position Jonah Lomu played -- so at 6'5" and 266 (got those stats from another poster here) he was a bit larger than your typical winger. He was known and admired and loved by rugby fans around the world as a great athlete and a gentleman as well, and will be deeply missed.

Lomu was an incredible force. But, for the clown that said no one in the NFL is comparable, I've got news for you. There are probably around 50 guys in the league currently that match his size, athleticism and speed. Maybe even more if you count linemen on both sides of the ball that intentionally carry an extra 50-80 pounds because their position requires it. Both are great games but are different in several key ways. American football is not nearly as demanding in endurance but is much more about burst and quickness. A lot of the guys playing at 300 pounds and more have a natural weight of 260-280. They carry that extra weight without any significant loss in the first 3-5 yards of movement, which is where American football is decided. Can they carry that weight for a full 80 minutes of a rugby match? No. Fifty pounds lighter? Yes. Different games with different needs. Both are great games.

Yep but they can't play 80's minutes. And Lomu coudl run the hundred in under 11 seconds at 118 kilos (thats over 300 pounds) so no- even top players of his size in teh NFL could compare- they are designed for a different style of game. Lomu was a freak- irrelevant of game.

Expert Loser, you're an ignorant troll. Lomu was a stud. No doubt. But he'd be just another stud in the NFL. He was a man amongst boys in his game and in his day. He'd be playing with the big boys in the NFL and most likely wouldn't have even been a ball carrier in the NFL. He'd be a defensive end, like a JJ Watt. Get a clue.

Name 1 player that matches his athletisism. He's 6'5, in his prime over 120-125kg and ran 10.8 in 100m. And if he trained for the nfl, meaning he didn't need to practise his rugby skills and endurance he would have easily improved his speed even more.
