I kinda feel Iike if. The 6.8 Western caught on then it would be more widely supported. Sadly it was released in the worst possible time and that sort of spelled the fate for it to likely remain a niche/cult classic of a cartridge. Perhaps things will change in the future but time will tell.

I am a 60+ year hunter reloader and rifle collector and having owned hundreds of guns over the years and almost every cartridge made and can hunt with any cartridge made and I pick the 300 wsm because it’s just a great cartridge and works for big game and the best trade off in recoil and performance. 280AI would be my second choice and they both just fill all the boxes for big game hunting.

Wow, what a coincidence. When I first saw this video loaded to premier I thought of those 2 exact cartridges also. I was with my rifle builder on May 11th dropping more stuff off and asked him if he was to choose only one do it all hunting cartridge he also said 300WSM but slightly modified with a longer throat so bullets can be seated out longer, which is what I did with mine. I've had excellent luck with both of my 280AIs so far. Both of these cartridges are new to me. 270 Win probably will always be my favorite but I like a variety.

I still think 7mm PRC is the best all around cartridge. The only downside: Hornady is not very honest to the consumers and didn't tell us that the new batch of 7PRC ammo were using substitute power and hence the velocity/performance is much lower. To avoid this disadvantage, using Federal Premium 7PRC ELDX 175gr is the best alternative option.

Who would have thought....300WSM???? Just kidding. The 300WSM is a seriously slept on (by some people) cartridge. If I wasn't a .30-06 fanboy (mostly because of nostalgia) I'd probably shoot the .300WSM if I was going after a .308 cal big game rifle. It really hits a sweet spot with velocity and recoil. Its fast enough for reasonable shot ranges but doesn't have the recoil of the truly fast big magnums. Plus you don't have to chamber it in a magnum length action and ammo is relatively easy to come by. It has had success but not has fallen by the way side in recent years. You just don't see many factory rifles chambered in it anymore..... mostly the budget rifles that are chambered in 2 dozen different calibers. As soon as I saw the lineup, I guessed you were going to determine it the winner. I feel its even a better choice than the .300WM because of the action length

Pretty fair review. I like the performance edge of the 300 prc over the winchester short mag, and I reload, so that seems to strike the sweet spot of heavy punch, flat shooting, but not completely overbore. I'll also add a 28 nosler down the road, but the 300 prc will be my next rig. 👍

I would've liked to have seen the 338 Rpm included in the discussion. I'm considering getting one in a Mark V Accumark. Intriguing point system. Dynamics seem to lean it towards larger caliber which I'm sure will bother some, but I agree that 30 cal is the most versatile caliber for medium to large game. 6.5-300 may be a newer cartridge but isn't really a modern one. May have been a good spot to squeeze the 338 RPM.

280 AI is severely under rated, it is everything good about a 7rem mag but in a smaller package with less recoil! I love everything about the RPM cartridge line but it is crippled by only being produced in the Mark V and with only weatherby producing ammo. I went so far as to email weatherby about adding the RPMs to their vanguard lineup to increase their exposure and they brushed me off saying they saw no reason to do so. It wouldn't even be hard to do is the sad part.

Great video. I love a good spreadsheet analysis. What I do when I'm deciding on bullets fora given cartridge is average the yardage at which you get 1) 2000 fps 2) 1500 ftlbs 3) 25" drift at 10mph 4) 1 inch drop per linear yard. Then I take the result and multiply by 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 based on the combination of the subjectives like, diameter, availability and ease of buying the best powders for that combo. I'm recoil sensitive so efficiency/recoil is going to be mitigated enough already.

Hype & hatred aside - the 6.5 Creedmoor has to be on the list. Not because it will knock an elk off its feet at 800 yards, but because it works great for 95% of our hunting (and more). Ammo is available, highly effective and highly accurate, and relatively inexpensive. Lightweight, easy-to-carry rifles chambered for it are still very shootable and help get the youngest and smallest hunters in the field (and it works just as well for us big guys too). What’s not to love? At our house, we have already taken a few antelope with it (in a lightweight mountain rifle with a slender barrel), along with an old muley buck and a big Rocky Mountain Bighorn ram (and a couple of coyotes too, including one at 300 yards). And it’s not done hunting for us!

I agree with you on the 300 wsm.My brother has a 300 wsm and I a 300 win mag using reloads both shooting 220 berger bullets at around 2900 fps.The 300 wsm use way less powerder than the 300 win mag that gave the 300 wsm way better barrel live.At a1000yards accuracy is the same but it is easier to tune the 300 wsm both rifles is custom build and cambers cut to use the longer 220 bergers. The barrels on both rifles is 28 in krieger heavy palma and single shot target RSA actions.I think if you reload the 300 Wsm kan duplicate 300 Prc velocities or at least can be close.

Heck yeah my current choice (and choice over the last 10 years) of 30 cal magnums WON 🥇 by 3 points. Sadly for me though, it is hard to find a threaded left handed rifle in that cartridge and I can’t find ammo for it locally anymore anywhere. Thankfully 😅 I can reload. I might sell my right hand Savage M110 Long Range Hunter in 300 WSM and eventually buy a threaded left handed rifle in either another 30 cal since I do have some 308 size bullets or go to a 7mm cartridge of sorts. Not 100% sure which one and which rifle.

Purely for hunting, the 6.5x300. By far my favorite modern cartridge design would be the wby rpm cartridges. I trust the feeding of the longer not too fat designs more. 28 nosler has a great argument for the best overall hunting. The 280ai is great, but honestly it holds very little more powder than the 280rem, so reloaders could pretty much match it. I have a great soft spot for the 6.8 western. For 30 cal it would have to be 300 norma. It's really complicated, because out east the 6.5s are ideal. For out west the bigger calibers are better if you only have 1 rifle, but 2 or 3 are the best. If in Alaska, the 338rpm is the no-brainer. Obviously, I'm biased, but the nosler cartridges are similar cost to the wbys. One thing people don't think of about price, is the weatherby's have Peterson brass from all the people in with insider information I've talked to, which is one of the top 3 you can get in quality. So, a box of ammo for my 6.5prc at around $60 has probably $40 more value in brass compared to my wby's at about $100, and if you don't reload, 1 shot high quality brass is worth a lot. And of course with some searching online, I can get the cheaper wby loading for about $60 and my crazy 6.5rpm shoots half inch groups with it for some dumb reason. All that bs said, for the lower 48 where i live the 28 nosler would have to be number 1 for me of the options presented. For hunting, cost and overbore don't matter to me. I'm not going to plug for a different channel, but there's a Custom rifle maker with a ton of experience, comparing the 3 plus the 7mm rem cartridges out to long range, and while I don't agree on everything, the information is invaluable. Thanks for the video, and sorry for my long reply.

I love my .300 win mag and will always have one…I’ll freely admit the .300 PRC is a smarter and more up to date cartridge design. If I were starting from the ground up I’d probably go .300 PRC or .300 RUM, but as is I have a pile of .300 win mag brass, over a decade of loading and shooting experience with the .300 Winnie, and I just like it and it does what I need it to do. Good video as always, I’m one of the boring old cartridge guys haha, not even by choice but by default. The old stuff I have isn’t deficient to my need and I’ll just keep using it, but certainly appreciate the newer designs and have no beef with them. At present my centerfire line up is .243 win, .257 weatherby, 270 win, .300 win mag, .358 Norma mag, and 450 ackley mag. Not a single modern gun in the lineup haha.
