Actually i did notice that you were intentionally going upside down every time lol. I thought it was weird at first, but i figured since you were a smaller fighter compared to your opponents, you'd end up on your back anyway, so you were pre-emptivly doing it in a way that gave you more of an advantage. Or you were just experimenting lol. Since you are a teacher and it is a rare opportunity to figure out what works and what doesnt in such a common public location.
Mike you are an absolute beast! Not sure if I should have won our round as that up kick would have KO'd me in a real situation. Pleasure meeting you and hanging out with you!

This is exactly the breakdown I was hoping to see. I think people forget how dangerous upkicks are too, your opponents all knew how to mitigate that danger because of they are all well trained but to someone not managing the distance and the danger, they could easily get taken out with one or 2 good up kicks I wish they had a bunch of untrained guys to square off against you all too so we could see what difference training actually makes both in defending and attacking

Icy Mike as always with spot on breakdowns. Yes, sir, it was you who showed more advanced techniques inverting guard and also the most ofensive in grappling, consistently. What the other masters in this competition showed was high-level low-risk manuevers. It's the front kick practiced 10,000 times. But you were the one with the """situational awareness""" and clear mind to risk the most while almost getting the huge reward. And so as they say that ofense may be the best defense, "ofensive stalling" it's perfect for dealing with an attacker in this context.
@hard2hurt

Offensively stalling lol that's deep

It did seem that Ramsey essentially took the least damage. Maybe he doesn't walk away with all the Wins...but he's definitely walking away. Which is probably what most of us would care about if we were pulled into a fight on a bus (or train or airplane, or car, etc.)

Also because Jeff and Seth looked so confident with their striking maybe the “judging” favored striking like a UFC match.
What i found most enlightening about the bus episode is how little punching/kicking technique mattered. Despite all of you guys being trained martial artists, it always degenerated into mostly basic grappling/wrestling techniques and brawl style punching/elbowing

Definitely a robbery on that point against Matt. That was a tactical, well-thought out, and well executed sequence. Love the breakdown, can’t wait for the rest of the episodes!!
I agree here, Muay Thai clinch seems most effective here. If you know what a guard is and how to defend some submission attempts. Great format by the way. I'm really impressed with what Rokas put up!
I love how you explain it all and gave us a clearer insight on the video. Thank you for the lesson!
Amazing drill 👏 all of you were fighting with intention. Your series will definitely open everyone's eyes about self defense and what it takes to survive in reality.💪🙏 Thank you all once again for bringing this amazing series👍

Icy Mike is such a dynamic Power Bottom. Mike, try BPC-157 for your knee, YMMV, but I had ACL and torn Meniscus reconstruction surgery less than a month ago and it seems to speed healing and reduces pain w/o any real side effects besides being $40 a bottle. May help you heal w/o surgery.

Snicker.
This caught my attention because I have actually witnessed a pretty brutal fight in a bus here in Brazil. A big,, strong, muscled dude was apparently on drugs, yelling, punching the seat in front of him and intimidating everyone. I was seating right behind. Eventually, the guy in front of him snapped, stood up and started punching and front-kicking him in the face (while holding on to the top bars). He was a regular looking but tall construction worker type. He did quite a lot of damage to the guy's face and I was amazed that the guy wasn't knocked out. The big dude had practically no reaction and just got out of the bus when the driver stopped.
I gotta say. This did not disappoint. Lot's to unpack from multiple perspectives. Great job guys.
Awesome stuff Mike! I've watched a lot of your videos but had no idea you were doing this until now, can't wait to see the episodes 👍
I heard about the show just yesterday and loved both episodes. It helped that I follow most of the instructors and it was extremely inspiring to see all them finally meet.
So, what I have learned is that Mike's elbows are the picture perfect definition of damage, according to the show/competition. Edit: Also, he's comfortable fighting upside down as much as he is upright, which basically makes him Spider-Man.

Loved the first episode! Amazing concept and love how all you guys stepped up to the challenge. Respect to everyone involved.
Muay Thai is awesome for "street fighting". Some of the Thai instructors from around Oldham, where I used to live, worked on the doors at local clubs. They proved the effectiveness of what they taught in that environment.
It's been great seeing you in the USDC so far! Definitely looking forward to the upcoming episode
The show is great- thank you so much for doing it.
I LOVE this series you all are doing.
I'm so thankfull for this video. I hope you do more on every single episode of the series!
Glad to see this video! I was thinking a lot about this when watching. Fighting techniques were all very simple stuff. Headbutts, elbows, knees, a few regular punches and a few front kicks, and standard wrestling. Could relatively simply make a whole style out of it. Not a lot of moves to learn. Very interesting to watch.
@paba1042
Жыл бұрын
I mean it makes sense. When thrown into self defense situations most people resort to some kind of ugly boxing. I honestly think Randy Coutures old dirty boxing and wrestling is the ultimate street fighting combination, I think he’d fight like that in his sleep and most people could train some kind of competence in it.
Amazing and thanks for producing quality.
It's crazy how very few do Greco but the clinch game you get from it makes you a man among boys. It is amazing how bad very good wrestlers can be at the clinch game. Most styles of grappling dont promote it and it's not fun to learn. I have kids not show up on Greco days. They just don't like being forced to clinch.
This is the type of content that would've glued me to the TV if it was on TV back in the days. Great stuff
What an awesome idea for a show! I was actually shouting armbar! armbar! as you were setting up that inverted armbar. Super fun to watch.
Great idea. Great execution. Thanks for keeping it fresh.
I loved this breakdown and these episodes were so much fun to watch. The only thing I would say about what you said about BJJ is that for the most part improvement in it is just getting better and better at the stuff you learn as a white belt. A basic armbar is going to be dramatically different from a white belt and a black belt. That being said I do basically agree with you that the greco roman wrestling was so important
@resilientkid
Жыл бұрын
Most martial arts are about mastering the fundamentals than accumulating flashier techniques, especially Wing Chun. We agree.
@af4396
10 ай бұрын
Yup. That's why the white belts stop practicing scissor sweeps and basic armbars, because they "don't work," but then a purple or black belt hits them with it. There's a huge difference between knowing a technique, and being able to do it effectively in sparring, and that difference is years of practice.
2:30 Seat and Beat is now the official term for this self-defense scenario. Thank you, Mike.
This is entertainment and we're loving ❤️ it. Fresh content.
The fight between you and Matt was gnarly. Loved it.
It's worth pointing out that Seth, who is almost entirely a karateka, did SUPER well on the bus challenge.
@PHIplaytesting

I have to disagree on the "almost entirely a karateka" bit. 😄Not only has he dipped his toes in every martial art on the planet but he has years of muay thai experience and he just got second place at a national sumo competition, and probably some other stuff I don't know about. He probably has the most experience in different martial arts of anyone in the competition. Also he's huge lol.

It’s a pretty awesome concept, like the moving bus, stuff in the way and competitive aspect has to add to the adrenaline dump in a way that’s harder to replicate in any kind of sparring. I think Mike’s creativity and willingness to try odd techniques (even if wasn’t always effective) gives him opportunities to evolve in other competitions. Like dealing with someone larger like Seth bum rushing everyone because his style didn’t change much against each other combatant.
This was actually a really cool analysis, I appreciate it a lot.
Love this breakdown
Torn minuscus for sure. Got the same probleme for years. Hitting legs in de gym alots and knee over toe help me alot, give it a go!
:') Your last line in the video is the best. Also, I wish Karate had sparring with elbows and knees, not just the kata. I wonder how a Kyokushin trained guy would do on the bus! Loved all the Muay Thai applications.
What a great idea and how cool of you to al make it materialize!
The whole show is really well done and cant wait for episode 3
Oh man, i watched the first episode and i needed this video xD
In the meanwhile episode 1 & 2 are out. It s so amazing. Please more content. Best wishes from germany
Great video Mike!
Those knees Ramsey threw looked mad painful. Given its such a tight, confined space. I'd say knees, elbows and stand up grappling control would win in that scenario.
Great analysis.
Great conclusion, mauy Tai & wrestling!
One thing I've noticed in the video is that in many situations (in a normal bus ofc) it would be easier to deploy the emergency hammer on a window than to reach for a gun or other implement on your person. It was surprisingly educational, despite really awkward angles and footage not showing actual, like, attempted murder
"Seat and beat"! This is amazing. I hope you give commentary to every episode of the inaugural USDC.
I use to train Okinawan karate as a kid. We would practice fighting our way out of a porter can. Good times. Hadn't had the chance. For a bus tho. I've also trained fighting my way out of a car and into.

It‘s an excellent idea - we do this once a year with a standard public transport bus at my Sensei‘s dojo here in Germany (we‘re not allowed drive it around though). Poles that you normally hold on to, become great weapons to drive heads into and lock arms around. And the limited distance is a huge factor - it is a real test of fighting ability.

I would agree Icy mike used the best BJJ on the bus. And i also agree that the rear naked choke was a bit sloppy. But a sloppy rear naked choke still works unfortunately haha. What a fantastic series
This video was interesting to me, because I was assaulted when I was a taxi driver. He sucker punched me from the backseat with a hook shot and I elbowed him directly in the face. I was enraged, because the drivers seat and center console were in my way. I was too busy covering and striking to reach the back release on the drivers seat. I had to turn myself 180 and kneel on the drivers seat to be able to engage my assailant. I almost got my thumb in his eye socket, but the drivers seat limited my reach. He was able to get distance by going back to the opposite corner of the cab. It was a lot harder to deliver punches kneeling on the drivers seat also. For awhile the POS switched sides and got cover behind the drivers seat. I got out through the drivers door to come around to F him up and then he got out of the other side of the taxi. At that point I had to get control of myself and I jumped back in the drivers seat locked the doors and sped off. The police found him, because he was stupid enough to come back out from where he was hiding. The police told me I should get counseling, because I could become a really “bad person” and I shouldn’t want to take peoples eyes out. If the laws and courts were rational, I would have been able to just deploy my knife and start stabbing and cutting. However, I was able to beat him hard enough to leave him with stitches and knock an earring off his head. He’s lucky the police arrived when he came out, but he was near where he was staying, so maybe he had a weapon. Obviously, I’m done with taxi driving. 😂
I am rooting for you Icy Mike!

Man.. fighting inside the bus sucks! No space to kick or punch. Everyone needs to have this kind of training if they want to LEARN to defend themselves(of course in advance stages of their training). Because of absolute resistance from the attacker, feeling of claustrophobia in close space and desperation to get up is very frustrating and stressful. Not everyone can train themselves in self defense like this. Hard truth!
