I own both the 60 mm and the 80mm and although the 80 is better it’s nowhere near twice as better. One advantage of the 80 you didn’t discuss is it’s ability to use telephoto extensions which would help with insects for example. I take product photos for dispensaries and I’ve actually found the 60mm with an 11mm extension to be my preferred set up but I break out the 80 to showcase strains with a lot of trichomes and contrast because the 80 is undoubtedly sharper. In fact the 80 mm with a 20 step stack makes the product look 3d

You obviously do more macro work at a higher level than I do. I appreciate the comment and the great information.

Good to know, I want to get into macro and the 60mm is a lot cheaper than the 80mm.

I appreciated the care you put into this review. You helped me decide this is not my next lens, way too big for me to carry and enjoy. I may look harder at the 60 instead, or just keep using an extension tube.

Thanks for the comment! Glad I could help. It is a big lens and for carrying around I think the 60 will be better. I need to test that one out soon.

Great video with great info! I always learn something from your videos, so thank you making these. I'd love to hear your take on the Nikkor MC 105 F2.8 compared to the Fuji 80mm. I really enjoy my 105, but would like to hear other photographers pros and cons. Thanks again!

I don't know if I ever told you but when I was working as the in-house photographer for a local company I did all the product and model photography with a Nikon D800. My one go to lens that I used 95% of the time was the 105 macro. It, of course, was not the Z mount but I loved that lens. Amazing for everything I needed it to do. Compared to the fuji? Equal. I don't know that I would say one is any better than the other. Loved them both.

Thanks for the video- the 80mm macro is number 1 on my list too. I have two macro lenses for my X-T5 - Fujifilm 30mm macro and Laowa 65mm macro. The 30mm is a great everyday lens but the working distance is too short for product photography. The 65mm Laowa gives twice life size 2:1 so great for insects. It’s half the weight of the 80mm and a third of the cost, but it’s manual focus only. Both are sharp lenses. The 60mm fujifilm is supposed to be frustrating slow at focusing but has nice character. It’s very reasonable on the used market. The 80mm macro can also be used with teleconverters - which could be interesting. As I said the 80mm is in my list.

I just bought this lens second hand on eBay for a lot less and it is in excellent condition. I share the same thoughts about the weight. I am thinking about selling it, as I do mostly garden/insect and it is heavy.

It's heavy and it's big yes. I've got it on my X-T5 and without the L-Bracket (which extends the grip) it's not fun to use for a longer period. But the images are great and it's weather resistant, which is a huge plus for doing outdoor photos. The Laowa is great (2:1 mag.) and it's pretty light aswell but it's not weather sealed.

Good show. I’ve recently purchased mine used for 1,200 cdn and have been using for a few days it’s great but like you I find the focus is annoying. I have it set on wide tracking as a rule and using xt3 as camera. But yes it’s great. Definitely a winner. Is it considered a prime lense?

1/500-1/1000 will not get any gains from OIS - almost the contrary - for some lenses - like the 100-400 for instance… OIS is mainly for slower than 1/250th

I know that you're not heavily into macro but having 2:1 capabilities might change that a bit as it allows you to see a world largely beyond the scope of human vision. @@Todd_Kuhns Yeah watch some videos on the Laowa, they are very complimentary. I've got the 65mm and it is very slim. It still also works great to infinity.

Best macro lens ever? Nah. It is a GOOD lens, yes, but BEST? Nah. It only goes to 1x magnification and the AF is, as you say, frustrating. So for true macro work, often one shoots manual focus anyway. And then the 65mm Laowa MF lens goes to 2x magnification, is as sharp, and much cheaper and lighter, smaller. (I have both and shoot with both frequently). For portrait / fashion shoots, AF is beneficial and the Laowa would not do but perhaps the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2 will be a better option, for half the price of the Fuji XF80mm. I do not have that lens, it is on my Wishlist though. I hear a lot of good things about it though from all around. Very sharp, good AF. And for product work, perhaps it is worth checking if the 85mm AstrHori Tilt lens is a good idea? I'm not sure about the sharpness, but it does tilt so you can get more depth of field in your shots without focus stacking. It is again all manual, but it is also about 1/3d of the price of the Fuji XFX80mm. So for less than the price of the Fuji XF80mm you can get 2 of the lenses I mentioned above and try out the 3d and resell it / return it if it does not work out for you. How about that? 😉
