Fujifilm 16-80mm A Year After... Let's be clear

Ғылым және технология

Why the hate for this lens?
Let's try to debunk some of the fake news around this travel lens from Fuji.
The lens was released a bit more than a year ago, and i bought it on day one as i needed it for a photography workshop Iceland.
I've been using this lens relentlessly in every possible condition and without any additional care.
Too many people talk about stuff they don't know.
This doesn't come as a surprise, we all know that, and the world is full of knowitall people ready to stalk about everything, with no clue.

I’ve owned this lens for over 2 years now and have done reviews of it too. As you rightly say, it’s great for what it was designed for. Primes will most always be better than zoom lenses, so it’s pointless to compare it with them. Your pictures at the end demonstrate that its more important to have a good eye for composition and light, rather than being a pixel peeper and obsessed with edge to edge sharpness! So thanks for putting this out there! Cheers

The 16-80 is one of 7 lens I have.....and the one I use the most. Great for video. Acceptable and often time incredible image quality...depending on if I use it correctly. I use it from around 20mm to 65mm. Usually at F5 to F8. Prime lens I have...the Zeiss 12mm Touit 2.8...the Fugi 16 1.4....the Viltrox 23 1.4.....The Viltrox 33 1.4....the Viltrox 56 1.4 the Viltrox 85 1.8........the Mitakon Speedmaster 35mm f/0.95 Mark II Lens.....and the one zoom.....the Fugi 16-80. When I travel....I take all the lens....but the 16-80 is on the most. I agree with you Luca....the 16-80 is a great lens for what it is.

Stunning images, thanks for doing this review, I have this lens and completely agree with you. I am not a pixel peeper that blows up pictures looking for soft corners, I am a photographer who looks at the complete picture. It is quite distressing to hear some of the negative opinions on this lens as I fear people hesitate to buy this lens and are missing out on one of the best all round lenses Fuji make. My travel kit is 10 24, 16 80, 70 300, all have ois, wr and I can use all my 72m filters if I attach my 67 72 step up ring to the 70 300. Thanks again, love your work, just subscribed.

I'm watching this waiting for my second copy, and looking at your awesome photos, I really can't wait! My first copy was soft throughout the entire range, looked like it never fully got focus, and the bokeh was about 2x more out of focus on the top left corner versus top right - tried it with electronic shutter, with a timer, on a tripod but it was just a bad copy. It took me a while to realize that there must be some Quality Control issue. I just hope I get a good copy this time! Great video, thank you. In these times I get quite jealous of travel photos. :)

I have just bought this lens, second hand in mint condition. Mainly for landscapes, nature, and hiking in general. Although it was a bargain, I was a little bit worried after all the reviews and comments about it on the web. But after watching your video I decided to take the risk and go ahead. I must say that I fully agree with you. It has been a game changer for my nature photography. It's perfect? No, it is not, but I can do almost anything I need in the nature with it. In real conditions sharpness still hasn't been an issue for me. Maybe distortion in raw at 16mm? But its close up capabilities are wonderful, the wide range, the weather resistance, and the OIS, oh, the OIS!.... I pair it with a light xc 50-230 and a 12 mm samyang and I have in my backpack absolutely anything I need for nature in a very compact and competent set!! Thank you for your reviews!!

Well informed analysis of this great lens. Have used and tested nearly every Fuji lens. Currently have the 16-55 on an X-T4 which I initially used with. 16-80 and now returning to a X-T3 and 16-80. One to save weight and balance of lens and camera (the 18-55 is very front heavy. Optically slightly superior but not enough to keep it. For the scenarios you mention and the excellent pictures you demonstrated at the end you made a great argument for that lens. Well done. Why do people go on forums to find out about lens and camera performance. Both there and on social media which I have scrapped just regurgitate repeated cliches from who knows where. Use the lens and give it a try you will not be disappointed. For the very small number of vloggers who are out there don’t buy this lens. It is quite simple.

People are catching on to this lens. There aren't too many flooding the second hand market, and the used prices stay high. It's worth the premium over the 18-55 for myself and is mostly glued to my camera. If you need to capture moving subjects in the evening/interiors, then pick something else. However, even for night shots, you can use the OIS to capture very low ISO / low shutterspeed still images without having to lug a tripod with you.

@@dylanwalsh4592 if you are looking to use this at night without a tripod. experiment to see the slowest shutter settings you can use. You should be able to use the lens at its widest aperture of F4 and 1/15 shutter speed or even slower. This will allow you to use lower ISO values and capture nighttime scenic shots. Of course moving objects will be blurred with slow shutter speeds but you can use that to creative effect.

It has the range I need 95% of the time. It is sharp. The star bursts are astonishing. It is a wonderful lens (for me). The 16 -55 may be optically superior but at the age of 62 and 2 heart attacks it is not what I need. I use a Canon SX70 if I want superzoom and just cannot be bothered shuffling enormous lenses. Apologies to all those reaching for the smelling salts with my saying this. I do not use it indoors and it can be a tricky beast to handle with too many pixels but at least Canon still hanging on in there making something. I am getting a S10 which is bundled with the 16-80 at the same price as the the 18-55 but £50 less cashback. Even if the 80mm is not razor sharp it is academic to compare with lenses with reach which is much less and if you want a wider zoom up against a fence with 18mm you cannot zoom with your feet. I fled from Fuji to m43 as there was no IBIS and they were saying it was not possible but looking forward to returning to Fuji especially with IBIS and 26mp. The m43 future is opaque as Panasonic are obviously not interested and time will tell if OM can get out anything really new.

Exactly my feelings about the lens. For what it was designed, it's very good. Well build, optically okay, nice size and functionality. For general purpose photography, it's plenty enough and I find it as great upgrade from 18-55. Some reviewers have expectations that are probably not possible to meet. Perfect optics with brighter aperture will surely result in a lens that is huge and expensive. You expect top quality? Pick a prime of desired focal length. You want lens good enough for most applications? Get 16-80.

I never said it's a lens never done before, the 24-120 range (105 at times) is well covered in almost every system. Nor I ever mentioned other systems as I don't have the knowledge to compare them, even though before settling in Fuji I used Nikon and Canon cameras and lenses for years (not the cheap ones, but the best in their lineup). Bottom line, however, I still think the Fuji is a really good lens, although not perfect

Hi, thanks for sharing. As for the question on the telephoto... The 70-300 is better, not miles better, but better. If you can find a good deal on the 55-200 then go for it, otherwise if the difference in price is minimal, go for the 70-300. The difference in size and and weight is basically non existent

Sharpness is debatable. To my eye the 16-80 is sharper overall, but not by a huge margin. I wouldn't choose one over the other based on the sharpness as they are both more than good. Size vs versatility is the question when it comes to these 2. Even price, now that they have the kit with the 16-80 out is less of a choosing factor.

Purchased this lens in an X-T4 kit, works well for me. What I learned to not do was to use the zoom feature aggressively, but with the OIS on the lens and camera I haven't had any issues. I am looking to get a prime but have been hesitant to purchase. Tried a Fringer adapter for some 'L' "Canon EF lenses, but to heavy for my taste. Adapter has been returned, though it works well. So, 23mm vs. 35? I'd be okay with the F2.

Ciao Luca, great video as always :) I got my 16-80 with my X-T4 and love it. When I travel I always take it together with my 10-24 and a 23 f1.4 for low light situations. At 16mm it shows quite some distortion in more arquitectural situations, but that's my only criticism. Then again, the 10-24 is superb at 16 and 18mm :) By the way there is a review by ex-Fuji-X photographer John Armstrong, who compared the 16-80mm to his prime lenses and concluded that the differences were marginal :)

Depending on the type of photography and the context, actual pixel peeping quality matters more. Sharp edges and some nearly invisible distorting in landscapes vs professionally paid portraits and print related work.

When shooting portraits in studio with flash you 'll end up using F8 or F5.6 which is the sweet spot of sharpness for this amazing piece of gear. The colours are amazing and the focal length is perfect for portraits. I find it is a all round lens and the perfection of it is exactly this multipurpose of genres it applies to. Travel and outdoors but also portrait, studio, events. I also know people are not really used to this lens on a portrait head shot studio environment and absolutely should try it.

The corner sharpness becomes important in those high resolution shots where the whole frame is the subject, such as landscapes or product shots. I'm not saying it shouldn't be taken in consideration when testing a lens, but after testing it we focus more on real life shooting

I’ve already replaced it with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, which is lighter, faster, and focuses much closer. I don’t need OIS because I have IBIS. So those are my priorities. Buongiorno Luca , Complimenti fai recensioni veramente chiare e utili.

I own this lens as well. Lately, I've been using my viltrox 85 and see noticeable difference in contrast, giving the Viltrox the edge. Anyone else here see a drop-off in contrast compared to other lenses? Compensating settings to increase the contrast on the fuji? Nice photos!

The Viltrox 85 is a contrasty lens, which is weird for a portrait lens, but not to the point where it would make the 16-80 lacking contrast. At 80mm the 16-80 loses a bit of contrast but nothing dramatic

what is the best stabilized lens in the fuji world in your opinion? Heard about 16-80 being the best but other say 10-24 is better?

  • @LucaPetraliaPhotography

    @LucaPetraliaPhotography

Well the 10-24 is great, but being wider it is easier to stabilize than a 16-80mm. To me, from a photography standpoint, the 16-80mm has probably the best stabilization of all the Fuji lenses. It's got some issues for video works, and you need to be aware of that

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography thank you. When it comes to video the 16-80 has some Focus issues, so maybe the 18-55 could be an option. (Although it is quite old)

@@erik6678 it's not just the focus issues, but also the stabilization tends to fight you when you start panning. They improved it via firmware update but it's still visible. The 18-55 seems to be smoother for video in general

Unless you need the 55-80mm or the 16mm, I think the 18-55 2.8-4.0 has better optical performance and it’s lighter weight

  • @LucaPetraliaPhotography

I don't agree on the better optical performance, as in the same range they perform neck to neck and the 16-80 focuses way closer and perform better on stabilization(for stills). But that being said, the point of the 16-80 is exactly that... Being versatile

They're very different, for different purposes. I like them both, but in different conditions. For outside and adventure the 16-80 is way more convenient. For events, low light... The sigma wins

Hello. I've a question. I'm the photographer of the tourists who is coming to hotel which I work. Family, couple, single woman, man, kids, babies are my clients. They are having holiday photos from me. Garden, pool, beach, sunset on the beach wherever needed or desired. So the question is x-h1 with 16-80 or x-t3 with 16-80 ? Thank you.

Get the Xt-3. It's a better camera overall. Not that the x-h1 is bad, but the Xt-3 is more modern, better AF, better sensor

I have X-H1 and I like that it has IBIS build in, so it will stabilize even those vintage lenses. I think that X-H1 needs battery pack as it consume quite a lot. I mainly chose X-H1 as the price dropped so much.
