    Well, at least since they let a writer retcon/update the origin. I mean, why does it make other Hulks too, unless everyone has a Hulk? It means Bruce wasn’t special, except that he’s “the strongest hulk there is!” Thunderbolt always had a Red Hulk in him? How about Harpy Betty Ross? Rick? Does Doc Samson just not have any hulk in him? The Leader? It was always the gamma, that was a trigger, but eventually everyone becomes a hulk. We did just get Thor Hulk, with his daddy Mjolnir. Bruce is driving Hulk like a truck now. 😂 I actually like some of the newer stuff, but the whole God’s Hulk form, and Hulk being TOAA’s favorite or something, meh.

    That would be amazing, even with its slightly shallower depiction of Bruce struggle if we could have gotten that same quality for Bruce's character from that movie too most of Avengers AoU all the way up until now I believe we would have gotten there or at least close to that happy medium between the two maybe, not as artistic or quite as deep, but I believe we'd all be happier

    This is the BEST Hulk movie I've ever seen in my life, I was a little boy when I saw the movie in theaters and it completely caught my attention throughout. I know it's been ridiculed for how long it is and that it's "boring", let me tell y'all that I sat through King Kong (2005) and this film and I wasn't bored at all. This film is a underrated near masterpiece, the reason why I love it is for how dramatic and somber it is. Also the story of Bruce and David definitely hit home to me personally because I had a complicated relationship with my father. Also that scene in which Bruce is underwater (after the nuke killed his father) and he has the only nice memory of his father made me sad, when I rewatched the scene after my father passed away last year... I was sobbing endless tears. My hatred for him was gone and I still miss him, and it's why I hold this movie close to my heart because it spoke to me personally and it did the character's psychology extremely well.

    Personally, the best adaptation of Hulk of all is not even live action film but rather the Avenger EMH, specially how it portrays Hulk and Banner duality, with both having distinct personality and having to work together to prove themselves as heroes to world, unlike films where Banner is main protagonist while the Hulk is just savage beast for the action scenes (the only films I felt Hulk had personality were Ragnarok and Infinity War)

Usually Banner and the Hulk are against each other, with Banner wanting to find cure and Hulk just wanting to be left alone. In EMH, not only they are able to interact but Hulk is truly trying to hero, unlike the comics were, most of times he did is it was when he had Banner mind (otherwise he saved the day bc his friends and Banner got involve in trouble).

    The repressed rage aspect was first explored by either Jim Salicrup or Roger Stern (I'm not sure which) in the late 70s, at the same time David Michelin made Tony Stark an alcoholic, and Chris Claremont started transforming Magneto into a Gypsy Holocaust survivor. That was a period when the Marvel writers had taken a page from Denny O'Neil's Batman, and Jack Kirby's Superman to explore a more grounded emotional truth to characters.

    This is the best interpretation of the hulk ever in live action. It shits on the 2008 and 2012 mainly because hulk is treated like an actual character and not just a spectacle for action. Hulk is treated like a Frankenstein monster, a misunderstood creature who just wants to be left alone and is also capable of doing heroic things, like when hulk saved that jet pilot from crashing into the bridge and saved Betty from the dogs. We also get a glimpse of hulk vs banner the monster vs the man, in the comics hulk hates because he thinks banner is trying to make him weak. Hulk is just as much important as banner is when it comes to character and I feel like live action interpretations of hulk after 2003 miss the mark.

And I know that you love those types of characters as based off your dc movie videos. Plus, imagine Red Hulk being an allegory for the military becoming the threat they fight against. But either way this was an incredible video.

    I loved this film so much because when I was a kid watching this, I really felt like reading a comic book while watching one simultaneously. I didn't care about Hulk's color or size because from what I've learned, many Hulk comics also portray Hulk in different colors and sizes. I loved the story, the pacing, and the whole feel it had. Plus, Eric Bana acted his ass off, and so did Elliot, Nolte, and Connelly. I personally loved the comic book transitions and how it presented the scenes. I never got lost in the movie, I knew what I was watching, I knew what the story was trying to tell me.

    I appreciated that it took the emotional aspect seriously. The Hulk really feels like an out of control curse on Bruce Banner that destroys his old life completely. The MCU Hulk feels very tame in comparison, more like the Looney Tunes Tasmanian Devil. Visually though it's pretty goofy. The comic book transitions and split screens make the whole thing feel a bit artificial even though the tone is more grim and serious.

However, I haven't rewatched it since, believing the hate this movie gets and thinking maybe kid me had it wrong. After this video, though, I am compelled to rewatch it, as after how The Hulk is being treated in the MCU nowadays, I need to watch something that actually does The Hulk some justice. Update: Okay, I rewatched it. The editing is wack, and the pacing could be better, but overall a GREAT story that is better than some recent MCU. Also that action sequence in the desert SLAPS! Arguably the strongest Hulk in live-action.

    Could not agree more. It's a cinematic version of a comic book for adults and I loved it back in the day even when everyone was trashing it. Ang Lee and Eric Bana truly got the essence of the Hulk even though Bana admitted that he wasn't a comic book fan. Norton admitted that he was a comic book nut and understood the character as well. I still prefer the 2003 movie though. I think Mark Ruffalo nailed the role as well upto the first half of the first Avenger movie and then it just all started unravelling towards the second half and from thereon and subsequent movies the Hulk literally started coming apart at the seams. And that pathetic lullaby just drives me up the wall. It was used in the comics once by Romanoff and had no effect on the Hulk whatsoever. In the MCU movies it calms The Hulk down out of nowhere and there is no explanation given as to why it works and how it was first used. Just a series of contrivances and plot devices. Don't even get me started on the clownification of Hulk in Ragnarok. Watching Rufallos interviews he just appears to be parroting words to show that he gets the Hulk and I'm starting to wonder if he actually fears getting typecast and secretly despises the character.

    As others have said in the comment section this movie really dives into Bruce's issues on a surface and internal level unlike in the MCU. In the MCU they touch on it but don't expand on it due to Bruce isn't the main character, favor jokes, and Hulk is only used as a weapon instead of his person. That's why I sometime in the future like in EMH a conversation between Hulk and Banner. Maybe Hulk is tired of being fused and wants to be the one in charge. We will probably see that eventually hopefully. Anyway this movie holds up as time goes on. The editing is a little weird and was really a comic book come to life. If Bana comes back I want to see him be the Maestro of the multiverse. I think that would be great change of pace for what we are use to seeing. I want to see Betty and Rick Jones in the films. Smart Hulk and Banner being the forefront are kind of getting annoying. Skarr should question Smart Hulk and say, "Who the hell you are? Where's my real father?" Overall great breakdown on why this Hulk should be appreciated more now.

    Thank you for this. Hulk has always been my favorite version of this character. Lee gave him a depth that is missing in every other story, and made him a fully realized persona with a rich narrative. I always recommend this movie to those who have not seen it, and will debate vehemently with anyone who has seen it and rated it less than it deserves.

    This is the 2nd Hulk film I've seen. I saw this film after seeing "Planet Hulk". The film was great, it had action, drama, comedy and adventure. My favorite part of the film was when Hulk was fighting his Dad and let him absorb his powers. The film taught me to control your negative emotions like anger and find a healthy way to deal with it. Studies have shown that mediation can help people manage anger and reduce aggression. The duality of Banner and Hulk really creates the struggle Bruce has with his anger. It really sets up the tone of Banner when becomes angry and becomes the Hulk.

    This is 100% one of the most underrated comic book movies of all time. Way ahead of its time. Does it take itself a little too seriously, and I don’t mean the material and the character, I mean itself at times? Yes. Is there some total conflicts with some rather odd goofy choices? Yes. But no, the ILM affects were not bad when this came out in 2003, they had the balls to put the Hulk in broad fucking daylight with the most obnoxious shade of green and purple ripped shorts, accurate to the comics, and it looked convincing. The action scenes here are more iconic to the source material than anything that came since. And there’s like a sense of believability and wait to it like when he throws the tank 2 miles after swinging it around. Or the way he jumps on the F 22 raptor, it just feels way more believable , acting all around is fantastic, besides a messy third act, and the fact they should’ve made Talbot the villain who mutate himself with gamma as well at the end so he faces Talbot and his father, with a more clean, looking final battle, this could’ve been an absolutely stunning, great comic book movie . I liked that the Hulk was essentially a repressed Child memory as a metaphor for PTSD, mental illness and anger issues. The Hulk looks like Eric Bana in the very next movie the character five years later, not made by ILM looks like cheap video game graphics and looks and acts nothing like Edward Norton. Not to mention the dollar store version of all the superior versions of the same supporting cast characters from this movie. If you fell asleep during this movie, you don’t like interesting contents. This was much more thought-provoking and stays with you. Massively underrated. I wouldn’t call it a film. I would call it a very good film that with a few alterations could’ve easily been an instant classic. The score is awesome. This takes a steaming dump on the Incredible Hulk, 2008+ a superior comic booky Hulk character in the avengers. Hulk 2003 and Hulk in avengers 2012 are the best iterations of the character on screen.

    Probably takes away my objectivity a bit but some of the things you critique I genuinely enjoy about the film, particularly the comic book style panel editing. I really liked what he was going for there and thought it was consistent and well done throughout. My only real gripe is the writing lets me down sometimes. I think about the Betty Bruce Ross nightmare scene “doctor it’s these dreams I’ve been having…. Tell me about your dreams”. Or the better Bruce breakfast scene where Bruce talks about his booming heartbeat. But at other parts the movie - particularly the most important parts - the dialogue and writing is spot on.

  • @joeytocd

    Interesting. I interpreted the scene where Betty tells him about her dreams as Bruce's earnest attempt to engage and be vulnerable with her, unlike his own dreams that keep him up at night. It gave us a glimpse into their genuine but fractured connection to one another. Could just be me.

  • @patrick4662

    @patrick4662

    @@joeytocd oh I totally interpreted the scene the same way. I also just loved the look of the scene, very intimate moment, and I think that cabin/woods setting is the same location where the dog fight is later. But it was just that one exchange I referenced, the delivery of the lines didn't really match the sincerity of the tone. I genuinely couldn't tell if Betty was just being playful or serious, and then Bruce is like 'tell me about your dreams' in sort of a deadpan way. So maybe its the delivery more than the writing.

    I saw this movie back in 2003 when I was 13 years of age and I really liked it, it's true The Hulk is a raging monster that destroys anything in his path, but he is also a tortured soul, The Hulk like the Frankenstein monster just wishes that everyone would leave him alone, since he is seen a monster there is no way that is gonna happen and everyone falls in a vicious cycle. I'm not gonna deny this movie's flaws, the acting is bland, the editon was a creative choise that could have been handled better (I mean look at Sin City, that's how you make a movie look like a comic book), the pasing is a little off as well, it would have been better is if they cut the whole begging with David Banner and started the movie with just Bruce having a nightmare due to flashes of his represed memories, and we leave the whole father reveal as a mistery throught the movie and not shown in the 1st fourth of salid movie and constantly coming back to it so we could see somenthing we already saw. I think Ang Lee had a great script that no one else understood, nor the producers nor the actors nor the executives at Universal, but they wanted a "superhero movie" to compete against movies like Blade The X-Men Spider-Man form Waner Bros 20th Century Fox and Sony repectively, and just so happens that Universal had the rights to The Hulk, so they let Ang Lee make his Hulk movie without knowing what they had and just to make it to the growing market of "superhero movies".

  • @ivane5110
    @ivane5110 Жыл бұрын

    Ironically, since I'm a major comic book fan and especially Hulk fan, the "comic book" editing/transitions were a major reason for me not being able to get into the movie. The lead and often Nolte's acting also failed to draw me in, though for opposite reasons; Bruce most of the time seemed wooden to me and Nolte seemed over the top. By the time acting scenes happned that were interesting to me, I had been so uninterested in the characters for so long that it was just too late. But I did like that Hulk was actually green and had purple pants and wasnt muted and his raw power was obvious. I also like that he had daylight scenes and wasnt hidden in shadows and drabness. And, as comic accurate as I'm guessing as it was by then, since Bruce's abusibe dad arc didnt even exist yet when i was still collecting the Hulk, I had that bias against the movie as well. Still, even though this isn't anything I'd watch again, I do like to think that this was the Hulk of the Toby McGuire universe and that the lead may actually appear again in that context, even if just in cameo; after all, for many, he is THEIR Hulk every bit as much that Bixby/Ferigno are mine.

    The movie is underrated but I think David Banner ruined the film. Nick Nolte was too over the top and he didn’t have any real motivation to wanting power. If they did Brian Banner like in the comics of being an abusive husband/father scientist who believes in a “monster gene” the movie would have been better.

    While I do think this movie is fairly dated by today's standards, I still got a soft spot for it. Exploring Bruce's past and psyche imo was a great decision from Ang Lee. Also let's be real, as whacky as the editing is or as cartoonish as the CGI looks. We are talking about a FIRST TIME adaptation. Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man film showed that they could be great. Still superhero Cinema had a long way to go before they really became popular. I know it's a far cry in comparison and quality but honestly I think without ang Lee we wouldn't have the MCU.

    After rewatching the film and having read many Hulk comics, Ang Lee Hulk is not that terrible adaptation, having ideas and elements taking from comics, like Banner drama with his father. However, I feel the movies fails to be good because of 3 major factors: 1) Establishing that Hulk was always on Banner because of his father experiments was mistake, making seem like Banner was destinated to become Hulk, unlike the comics where Banner's father actions created the Hulk in Banner's mind, the accident with Gamma Rays just manifest the monster created by all his anger 2) The pace of film is too slow and takes too long to get to the action scenes. The Hulk only appears 4 scenes and only one of them is actually well shoot and feels epic . The rest feels short or poorly done, being made at night making hard whats going on. It' makes the film very boring for people who were expecting a action-packed super hero film (not help by the fact Ang Lee tries to replicate the dynamic comic book style of transitions but doesn't fit with tone of the scenes) . That wouldn't be the case if the scenes of character talking was interesting but sadly this brings to another problem... 3) The acting in this film is weak. The actors are great (specially Eric Bana and Sam Elliot) but their characters are so stern. There's so few emotion when they deliver their lines. It's the same problem with the characters in DC Snyder films or Star Wars prequels. If we can't feel the characters emotions and personality we can't connect with them and their drama and consequently, we can't feel interest in the story.

    1) I agree with that. 2) We just got spoiled with MCU-DC non-stop action, you can't please all people as some want action others an actual film with ups and downs. They did a lot in the dark(and compared to Transformers or Venom you can see more then well what's going on), to reign in the budget, the editing and comic book-like panels are a problem, yes, true. 3) True, solid casting, but they're all a bit wooden. Yes we do see the same thing from Superman, being so stoic and boring yet die hard Snyder fans will come to his defense.

    @@4Everlast 2) It's not just lack of action, it's the lack of balance between the action and drama, considering how other films at time like the Raimi Spider Man trilogy knew when to have good action and when focus on character drama, making the film interest for mutiple types of audience. Ironic I felt Norton Hulk suffered from opposite problem, having too much chase and action and less character drama, although the climax between Banner and Abomination is th fight I wish Bana's Hulk had, with Bruce not only fighting the villain but also helping people, giving his battle stakes and helping Banner come to terms with the Hulk, seeing how the anger he always feared is not only part of him but something he can use those he care for.

    @@alexandrefrauches132 Yup, messy tone. True, true. I agree, liked Norton, but no one looked and felt like The Hulk(visually) like Ruffalo, the 1st act of Norton's Hulk was SOLID, but you'd get a great Hulk film if you combined the best of that Hulk with this, Ang-Lee's Hulk, now that would be perfection.
