this is why starting a game and playing the opening is always the best, because so much feel possible... it's also why games as a kid felt amazing to us because we believed you could really do anything if you could just figure out how

Yes! I was just thinking about this the other day when thinking about a script. I remember believing I could go anywhere if I flew the plane far enough in GTA SA as a kid, haha. Where you’ve been? Missing your great content!

Yeah, more and more I notice this drags down the second half of open world and open world-ish games. You always run out of interesting upgrades to find and/or anticipate way before you run out of world to explore, and neat upgrades to find are what make exploring worthwhile. Currently hitting this wall hard in Xenoblade 3, and it really dragged the second half of Tears of the Kingdom down recently as well. Which is extra annoying considering that it's not like either game didn't have plenty of room and need for more upgrades as they were. To be clear though, I don't think this is a problem with the big, open map design itself. That sort of freedom is a very good thing and I DO NOT want to go back to directly linear narrow hallway game design. Developers just need to do a better job of filling their big worlds with compelling upgrades and such, and making sure there are exciting upgrades to find through the entire adventure. Which should be more about having MORE upgrades to find in total, rather than increasing the time/space/grind between them. For example, I've never yet played a big open world game and not wanted my character to move faster. So make sure to throw in movement speed upgrades to find and bam, you solve two problems at once.

Crazy how some people hate games that give you this level of freedom. They're some of my favorite games ever. Red dead 2 is also one of them.

Glad that the algorithm recommended me this video. Immediadetly subscribed since you seem to be exactly the type of video essayist that I enjoy. Looking forward to watching your other videos and your future work. Also cool that you talked about Elden Ring and Outer Wilds, two of my favourite games. I think From Software in general manages to really capture this spark of wonder for me that makes me totally immerse myself in the world of their games. The atmosphere and world design of their games are just impeccable. I still often think about Lordran and wonder what could be just out of bounds or remember the great atmosphere of Yharnam and wonder about its eldritch horrors. Thanks for this awesome essay! Keep it up!

Thank you! I’m really happy you’ve enjoyed my video😄 Outer Wilds is definitely one of my favorite games, once in a life experience, and I have become addicted to all of From Software’s games. Bloodborne’s atmosphere is amazing indeed, I think the twist with how they present the horror in the unknown brilliant and I definitely have a weak spot when it comes to lovecrafitian horror. Need to replay Bloodborne asap

*Control 2019 gave me the biggest sense of Wonder I think I've ever had with a game 👍 the size of the Oldest House, the eerie dark vibe on every floor, not knowing what to expect around each corner....it completely immersed me like no horror game ever has and captivated my entire imagination 👌 I really hope Control 2 can recapture that and add more intriguing events and experiences* 🙏

I’ve got some high expectations for Control 2 after what I experienced in Alan Wake 2, Remedy sure is special, can you imagine if they go around the globe fixing AWE’s? Would be really cool. And they really reached their vision with Alan Wake 2, Control 2 is probably going to be a huuuge step up.
