    Konami ain't to be trusted. You'd only need to do basic research to understand why. -They let any trash dev that asked make a Silent Hill game post SH4 and they lost the gold master discs to Silent Hill 2 & 3 proving they really don't care about Silent Hill as much as they say. -They made Metal Gear Survive and relased inferior remasters of MGS 2 & 3 proving they don't care about MGS. -They killed Castlevania for years. Firing devs who had worked on classic installments. (That Netflix show doesn't count because Konami didn't do a thing but Ok it and collect a check for other's work). -They are only making remakes of flagship franchises now because their pachinko gambling profits (you know, the reason they fired all those talented in house gaming devs) in Japan were cut to due new Japanese laws. This is just a desperate move to walk-of-shame back to videogames to after their failed pivot to gambling blew up in their face. They don't care about these beloved franchises. These executives can talk as enthusiastically as they want in front of their Silent Hill green screens, underscored by classic Yamaoka music during those Transmission directs. I don't buy that they care because their actions in the last decade plus say otherwise. I'm of the mind that SH2R is frankly nothing but a glorified movie tie in game. Konami and their tendencies over the years have instilled this sort of raw cynicism in people for them.

    28:53 a little correction. I recently played the Legendary Collection and MGS1 is not on the disc, but a download code. Multiple even. One for each language.

    Evan can't understand 'if you don't like it don't watch it'? Seriously? If you dislike a show and simply don't watch or talk about it, it lowers all forms of attention towards it. If you take to social media and loudly complain about it you start to create discourse around it, get it trending, which means more people watch it to find out why it made you so angry. The line goes up for the showrunners because all they see are more viewers and they don't give a crap if you love or hate it, all that matters is you're watching it, so they'll keep following that formula because it got what they wanted, views. If you don't like something, turn it off. It is legitimately that simple.

  • @stapuft

    @stapuft

    Exactly it used to be "dont like ot dont buy it" but since we have diverted from fiat based ratings to attention based, "not watching" is the new "not buying", its econ 101.

    1:24:00 Disco Elysium is an example of media that would not be anywhere near as widely acclaimed and would not appeal to anywhere near as many people of different persuasions if it didn’t wear it’s politics proudly and intelligently on its sleeve, didn’t have the ability to laugh at its own ideology, and have good-faith representations of other ideologies as well as equal laughs at their expense. It is largely untouched by culture war grifters on either side because it’s literally too genuinely political and intelligent about real-world serious politics in general for them. It’s for grown-up brains. Politics *_can_* be in media and not ruin it, they just have to be communicated _smartly_ and with great care and knowledge of the subject matter. Only good writers can make it work. Neither culture warrior faction has good writers so that’s why you usually don’t see much of that sort of thing anymore. As an enjoyer of Star Trek, Son, I also point to Deep Space 9 as a deeply geopolitically inspired work. It draws tons of inspiration from real-world political and international intrigue.

If they’re hostile, just avoid ‘em. My family has never had the “ruined Thanksgiving” phenomenon because that’s always been family policy. It’s the same with a piece of media. Just don’t treat people like they’re the devil and stupid as hell and you can have a dialogue through your work and make something worth playing, reading, watching, or at least worth thinking about.

    Its a two way street. Konami let him run rampant for awhile pre MGSV/Ground Zeros development. Thats how Kojima ended up pushing the boundaries of his employment by running up the budget for MGSV and making a demo for a new Silent Hill game that he didn't even get Konami execs approval for. Kojima didn't just start acting like a Rockstar. Not unless he was treated as such by his employers at least somewhat. Konami definitely played a part in inflating that ego too. Otherwise how does a guy like Kojima, who has said since MGS2 that every new Metal Gear game he's worked on was his last one, make MGS3, 4, Peacewalker, and V, not to mention helping with Revengence? Konami probably had to butter him up some everytime.

    @@stapuft I don't like Konami as much as the next guy but I don't think Kojima is God on the throne either. He's a damn good dev with great ideas. With that said Kojima ran up the budget of MGSV and made that PT demo on the company dime without approval. Things like this would get anybody fired at their job. Out of all the things Konami has done over the years I find the firing of Kojima a weird hill to die on because out of all the anti employee and anti consumer stuff Konami actually has done they were totally justified in firing him. If I worked for your company and used up your money and resources on a pet project I didn't get an ok from you on in addition to inflating the budget on a current project you'd fire me too. No level of talent is worth a blank check. Remember every piece of media you've ever loved had to work within the restrictions of a set budget. Limitless budgets for media rarely turn out well. Games with limitless budgets meander in development forever and turn into crap like Star Citizen.
