Teddy I don’t know if you have already done this but I would love to see a “newly graduated watch” list. Good to see another video that caters to people who still appreciate vintage proportions. You say that dress watches have become less of a thing in the last few years. I had to wonder what you meant by the last few years. When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s most men wore a dress watch. But from the mid to late 70s sportier watches crept in.

Some really great options here Teddy, I certainly love the Lingines Sector dial, I came very close to getting one last weekend but the Longines Tuxedo 3 hand won out by a whisker as not only does it look good and classic there is nothing in my collection that looks even slightly similar. I do find myself drawn to the Hamilton and the revised Tissot Visodate ( have the old 2824 based one) more as well. Keep up the great work Teddy.

Good choice in selecting the Baume & Mercier Clifton Baumatic. That is an underrated watch. It has so many things going for it, including wearing well on the wrist. Unfortunately, not many watch enthusiasts know about the new Clifton Baumatic. For Longines, I think outside of their Heritage collection, their Master Collection with the barleycorn dials, Breguet style Arabic numerals, and blued steel hands on leather strap are worthy dress watches. For example, model number L2.628.4.78.3 which has a classic case diameter of 38.5mm and thickness of 9.2mm.

This is a very good list of what is my favorite category of watch. There were a few that I was unaware of. I would add to that list the watch that is on my wrist as I type this, the Tissot PR100. It is a very simple, elegant design in the modern, large, easy to read face, but it is not so large that it overpowers my relatively small wrist. It works with anything from jeans to a tux. It is price is at the bottom of you list.

For me the problem with modern dress watches is that they’ve gotten a little bit too far toward the “big and thick” end of the scale in a lot of cases. Dress watches are supposed to be subtle, classy, and understated whilst being beautiful and elegant at the same time. They’re not supposed to be wrist bling. And they’re not supposed to be so big or thick that they’re on show literally all the time because you simply can’t fit them under the cuff of your shirt. They’ve become garish and pretentious. It feels like people these days think that the correct size for a dress watch for their their wrist is one that fills the entire width of it. And to me that kinda feels like it defeats the point of a dress watch. I suspect this is why so many people are buying vintage watches from eBay and places like that these days. I wish more makers would go back to making 35-39mm dress watches that are maybe 8mm or 9mm thick max. They don’t even need to be automatic because it’s not like you’ll be wearing them all day, every day. So you’ll probably end up hand winding them every time you wear them regardless. I just bought a lovely little 35mm watch from the 60’s with a really great looking domed, grey sunburst dial and separate day and date complications at 3 and 6 o’clock similar to a Seikomatic Weekdater but a little fancier. It’s got a hand winding movement and honestly it’s SO thin. Without the domed crystal I bet the case is no thicker than 5mm. I really wish there were watches like that still being made, instead of 44/45mm monstrosities that look like you’re wearing a satellite dish on the end of your arm lol.

I have big wrists yet I really don't care much for the oversized look, I have wall clocks that are smaller in appearance.

Completely agree with this ! 35 - 40 mm watches with a max 46 - 48 lug to lug with a max thickness of 10mm is ideal! Satellite dish on the wrist made me chuckle and deserved the like!

What are some watches you'd suggest that fit your criteria? I.e. smaller case size, slimmer profile, vintage aesthetics?

@@Bkesal14 it’s been a long time since I posted that comment, and I think it would seem that in the meantime some companies have really caught on to the prevailing consumer sentiment. I think at the higher end of the budget, the Longines _Conquest Heritage_ and _Heritage Flagship_ models are both really great modern reissues/reproductions of much older pieces they produced previously in the 60s I think. The _Conquest Heritage_ is my personal favourite because it’s smaller at 35mm (Flasgship is 38.5mm), and its domed dial I feel is a much more faithful reproduction of the dials from the era. Both are super thin considering they’re automatic, too. Also I saw that Rado reintroduced their _Golden Horse_ model - a sporty dress watch they produced from the 50s/60s onwards in many different forms. Its casing and styling seems to perhaps be a bit of an homage to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, with fluteless or fluted bezel options. The main difference being the Rado sports a heavily domed dial as opposed to Rolex’s much more modern-looking flat dial. At the lower end of the scale, a few more budget-oriented brands have also capitalised on the call for a return to retro, with brands like Accurist and Geckota to name but a few releasing their own versions of the classic 60’s style bicompax racing chronograph (à la the 1968 Heuer Camaro) featuring tonneau/pin cushion cases with round bezels and dials. The compromises made here, however, are that the movements are usually either quartz or mechaquartz with no running seconds dial. Although I will say I picked up Accurist’s version, the _Retro Racer,_ with blue dial and orange and white accents, for half price at £70 down from their £129 RRP and I’ve been VERY impressed with it so far. It’s thin, its stated size of 41mm seems to wear much smaller because the lugs are so short, and the finishing is really great for the price. Sadly it’s since been discontinued it seems. If you’re not intimidated buying from Chinese sites like AliExpress, then I’d also fully recommend looking into the brand Mysterious Code. They produce some really lovely retro-inspired pieces, with their best I think being their interpretation of the 50’s style Longines bi- and tricompax chronographs. The model I picked up was a bicompax with blue guiolloché reverse panda dial with silver subdials, and I have to say for around £75 (available here: a.aliexpress.com/_EJ4RdTZ), I’m absolutely delighted with it. It uses the Seiko mechaquartz chronograph movement featuring a sweeping chronograph main seconds hand and has been incredibly accurate so far. The only downside for me with this brand has been their awkwardly modern and stereotypically Chinese-gibberish-attempt-at-English random brand name. Its just such a nice little watch at 38mm that I can bring myself to ignore that.

Due to the fact that I’m not one who generally needs a dress watch, I’m a big Certina DS1 fan. I have three models (a 38mm Roman numeral dial, a 39mm Powermatic 80 black dial and a 41mm small seconds silver dial) and they offer me a nice range from vintagesque dress style to very sporty dress but I have no problem wearing the sportier models as dailies. My three DS1s are all out of production but, in my opinion, are better because they offer decent lume and a more modern aesthetic.

i Find the Ball racer very attractive since I own a white dial with light blue markers and hands I can say is a modern interpretation of a mix between a Datejust and Explorer with magnifier glass at the 3 position, 40 mm diam., 100 meters water res. which could also serve as a casual watch and a list price of $1600 but it can be had at under 1k in the gray market

I love your videos! I’m a big fan! Could you please do a video on the Frederique Constantine Slimline Monolithic. It’s so intriguing with its 40Hz Fc-810 movement. It’s so smooth it reminds me of a Grand Seiko Spring Drive. Thanks & keep up the great work!

I own the Hamilton Intra-matic with silver dial and gold case (h38475751) and bought the Fluco Nizza silver suede strap for it with gold buckle and it is a stunning combination. Hamilton offers such value and quality for the money. Great movements and sapphire. Makes it tough to buy watches with lesser specs.

Please continue this focus on dress watches, 3-5k should be next. Dress watches are often more interesting (design-wise) than sports timepieces since they have to be much more minimal, not to say austere even. Great video, cheers!

My collection veers higher but I could not help being impressed by the references from Orient, Seiko Presage, Tutima and Nomos. There are exciting watches at all price ranges and it would indeed be possible for somebody to have a nice three watch collection for as little as $1,000 to $1,500.

I have the Clifton Baumatic ( bought as alternative to the AquaTerra which was a bit pricier than i felt comfortable with paying) and the Hamilton jazzmaster, both great daily wearers! PS: Work in a suit and no tie environment with a bit more relaxed Fridays.

IMO Hamilton has a winner with their Jazzmaster Thinline series. Nice and thin (as the name would suggest) to slide with ease under a dress shirt cuff, good quality leather bands, reliable ETA 2824 workhorse movement, and nice clean minimalist dial design, all for comfortably under a grand.

The Intra-matic and the Orion are the top of my dress watch list. Unfortunately, I so rarely have the opportunity to wear one that they likely will be a few watch purchases away. It's hard to justify spending much on a dress watch, so it's a hard purchase to justify. Maybe I will end up with a Time Marlin Auto or Seiko Cocktail time instead, since those are a bit more affordable.
