Sonic and The Black Knight is, I'm pretty sure, the only Sonic story with an actual proper ideological conflict, where the villain isn't doing what they're doing because of revenge or cause they want power, but because they genuinely believe it's the correct thing to do. Also, With Me goes unbelievably hard.

This is where Sonic peaked as a character honestly.

Amy Rose (in this game/mid-late 2000s to early 2010s era) would demand we say otherwise, but honestly, we need more people that actually believe in Sonic's story and that he didn't just write it to piss off his friends and rivals so he can purposely stand her up on their date... and Sonic, this time on purpose, wins the fight by turning into the Werehog...

My personal favorite part of Black Knight is how Sonic behaves in the cutscene before the final boss. He doesn't treat Merlina as a genuinely evil villain, wanting to simply stop her and be done, but instead speaks to her like a friend, asking for the reason behind her actions, trying to talk her out of having to fight. He only decides to attack once it's made clear she isn't going to stop until she's been defeated.

I dont care what anybody says The Black Knight is the peak of sonic's compassionate and kind personality and where he's such a badass too with the sword. It is actually one of my favourite sonic games and the first one I actually completed fully, I loved the Secret Rings too. These two games and Unleashed formed my childhood

Not to mention them also feeling for Merlina when she not only raged at Sonic thinking she was just an overrated AF serial killer like Walter White from Breaking Bad, but also wanted to fight him as the main antagonist of the game even after she accepted defeat like she should’ve thus tying to the beautiful ending of a kinda sorta underrated game… until the post-credits scene which wanted to give us the idea that unlike Merlina, Sonic was the real villain of the game for the reason I said.).

Random fact: there's a file in the sound test bonus feature, where Blacksmith!Tails asks about Sonic's gauntlet in a similar way to how he asks about the knights' weapons, implying that modifying or changing Sonic's gauntlet was going to be either switchable or modifiable.

I love this story and characterisation, Sonic's personality and the way he acts everywhere is the peak of his character, also really loved Merlina as a villain. The art style and graphics, although they aren't extremely high budget, the style feels just so matching and feels so expressive. Haven't played the game but from all the clips and everything I've seen the story. music and characters are amazing.

This entire game and Rush's "He's like the wind" are my favorite bits of Sonic, and completely encapsulates why I still love this character, I never stopped loving him, since my childhood, he'll keep being a model for me for the rest of my life

I can't decide which I like more. I didn't know for a long time that SEGA held a poll for what fans wanted to see for a third storybook game and that Greek Mythology won. I wish we could have seen that

Crush 40’s cover of With Me is atrocious. I like the instrumental, but the vocals are godawful. The vocalist for Crush 40 works for songs like What I’m Made Of and I Am… All of Me, but songs like With Me just do not mix with his voice and how he sings.

With Me is easily the most underrated vocal song in the franchise, and just how in the hell did they get Marty Friedman on board?! I also really like how we see the effect that Merlina letting the underworld loose has on the land, as we revisit old places and see them changed. Further building her up to being a threat. Black Knight is still the last good story we've gotten from the series.

Unpopular opinion: satbk is my on of my top 3 favorite Sonic games.

Knight of the Wii

Personally, I like using Shadow more than Sonic, because when you use soul surge, everything stops due to Chaos Control. With Sonic, everything slows down. And if you get Shadow's ultimate weapon, Shadow will use Chaos Blast. It doesn't have a very wide range like in Shadow the Hedgehog, but it's very useful if you're in a crowd.

I appreciate black knight story much, and I think this is one of the reason why I kinda dislike the future sonic game stories due to inconsistency in character developments....until Sonic Frontiers redeemed a bit of Sonic's character. Also, if only Jason voices Sonic in Frontiers, I would love to see that. (Not saying Roger is bad, he is decent as well, but I kinda interested in Jason voicing with serious tone)

This was one of my favorite games as a kid cause I just loved Sonic and I was a huge nerd so Sonic with a Sword was just the ultimate mash up. The combination of great music definitely hooked my little brain on playing way more and I would just sit there swinging that damn wii remote for hours. Going back and listening to the soundtrack now also just makes me love the game more cause I have just have a fondness for the soundtrack and the memories associated with it. With Me Powermix by Crush 40 is also just a fucking banger.

It didn't age well at all (seriously, Sonic was mostly in character in the 2000s, and I trust his story). While technically, what Sonic did (he stood her up on their date and he confessed his feelings to her in Unleashed, whereas on that topic, I wouldn't be surprised if Sonic turned into Dark Sonic the Werehog) was wrong, I feel like Amy took it as if Sonic were worse than his other ex-girlfriend Fiona Fox (unlike in Ian Flynn's comics) and other enemies, yet more people felt bad for Amy (and the rest of Sonic's friends and rivals like Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge and the Babylon Rogues) and wanted Sonic to just stop being "self-centered", "dishonest", "misogynistic/likes to beat up all women", "inhuman", "narcissistic", "racist", "anti-SJW" and "a deliberate danger to his people". I understand the feeling of being stood up on an important event, but then there's also taking things too far (heck, even Sonic's friends had their moments back then of being out of character themselves by enabling Amy's flanderization in games like Black Knight and the Riders series, mainly Free Riders, and I'm sick and tired of those who defend her in that game) and needing to respect Sonic and stop treating him like a bad person/character just because he did something wrong, especially because he has plenty of optimistic, protective, level-headed and skillful qualities.

Thanks! I go into my thoughts about Secret Rings a bit more in my video about it, but I think Sonic's good in that game too. I'm also a fan of him in Unleashed (though I haven't played it in a while). I definitely think this period of Sonic games has my favourite characterisation of him.

I feel like there's elements in this game that sugest it was going to be so much more, the short runtime (which to be fair i don't see as a bad thing, on the contrary nowadays i loathe the thought of having to put my life into some 50 hour game regardless of how good it is) Sir Lamorak and Galahad aren't used at all in the story, the knights only being playable in 4 levels doesn't give much of a reason to go back to them with different weapons, the style system unlocking kind of late in the game, etc. But despite that the story, the look, the soundtrack, my favorite song ever Knight of the Wind, the medieval gothic aesthetic, Sonic's best characterization to date and the satisfying gameplay are enough to make it my favorite Sonic game next to Frontiers

I love this game too, I played it all the time as a kid (I also got the game from my cousin!) And the cgi cutscenes of sonic slashing thru shit is so gnarly.

This game has the best story writing in any Sonic game (apart from Frontiers cuz we have Ian Flynn in that) and people look down on it. Black Knight will always be and still is my favorite sonic game of ALL time and I will gladly defend it

Sonic abd the Secret Rings was an amazing game and takes skill to beat, I literally did a speedrun of the stage on the console version for Levitated Ruins and got the best time score on that stage. Its on my channel.

I grew up with this game, I put many many hours just playing it for fun. I love Sonic and The Black knight. I played it more than sonic colours. me and another guy used to take turns playing it at a place where kids could just hang out. me, my siblings, and friends would play the multiplayer for a long time whenever we did. I have so many memories with this game. Sonic and the Black Knight will always have its own section in my heart. I do NOT care how terrible people say it is when it made me and family/friends happy and brought us together.

There's a German video that explains some of the finer points of this game's story which I found to be rather eye-opening. One of the points is that Caliburn tests Sonic whether he has the potential to be a king. A knight can run away since he is of more use to his king alive than dead. But a king must be willing to sacrifice himself for his people. That's why Caliburn becomes Excalibur when Sonic refuses to give up when fighting Merlina. I think that's what you missed at 3:08 and 3:22, but I did so, too. P.S.: You called Black Kninght a bad game in the thumbnail? I think its gameplay is surprisingly deep, but it took me a while before it clicked. That's why I consider it to be underrated. But I also somewhat like Secret Rings, so maybe I shouldn't watch your video about it considering how much you seem to hate it.

the sword reminds me of mimir from god of war but this game did it first, every game needs a main character with a companion that just talks to them.

I love that this game is getting the respect and attention it deserves. I remember being like 7 years old and thinking that the coolest thing in the world would be sonic with a sword. while that gimmick was probably the coolest thing at the time, what made this game so amazing was the way the story captured everything I liked about sonic. I expesically loved the fact that instead of the terrible cgi cutscenes weve been used to in basically all sonic games (even with current day frontiers), they instead decided to do more of a comic style story book approach to story telling. This on top of the music, the collectables... man this game was awesome. I felt as if sonic worked best in these settings, thrown into a random world or siituation where he does't spend too much time wondering how he got there, rather how to solve it in a way he determines to be the best, whether its wrong or right. Great video!

honestly I really wish the bosses in this game were harder

if you craft the best swords for the characters they get very powerful. shadow fires chaos spears with every sword swing and his soul surge becomes chaos blast. blaze her thrust attack creates a fire spear in front of her that kills multiple enemies. and knuckles, i have no idea i see no difference so you can skip him lol but according to google it increases his soul surge reach and his swords hit all enemies on the way back

Saying that this game has no challenging Bosses is a statement beyond false King Arthur #2,Earth Dragon & Lancelot Returns are the 3 hardest Bosses in the game

The worst part is that the full levels are locked behind completing all the missions in an area, but the full levels are actually quite fun

Fun fact: The VA who voices the sword, also voices Reala from NiGHTS. So head canon is that after JOD the jester was cursed into being a sacred sword, until a pure hearted person comes to prevent a disaster.

"the REAL Sonic" You mean the Sonic you grew up with? Who are you to be the arbiter of what and what not the "REAL Sonic" is? Shiro Maekawa himself said that he wasn't a fan of the classics, and wanted to make the character into his own thing. So even the writing in this game is a detraction from the "original" Sonic. Either way, it's very dumb to gatekeep a cartoon animal in the way that you are right now. All Sonics from all eras of the games are still Sonic, and they're just as valid. Sonic is Sonic.

I do clarify in the video that I think Black Knight is the best out of the games rather than all Sonic media. I've never actually read any of the Archie comics though. I've heard some good stuff about parts of it, I've just never set aside the time to read them.

Stupid and cool pretty much sums up the game. An that rules okay.

Sonic is about as interesting here as a brick. All he does is lecture others with platitudes. For a better example of what they were trying to go for, I'd look to Zidane Tribal from FFIX. His ethos is expressed in a similar "I don't need a reason to help people" shtick, but it comes from someplace real, and Zidane is far from a perfect person despite always doing his best. He's more relatable as a result.

I'm honestly astonished as to how you could come out of this game thinking that, when it's by far the most nuanced and interesting take we have gotten of this character in pretty much anything ever. The subject isn't just "I don't need a reason to help people" but more so "I will do what I think is right no matter what anyone says, even if that makes me the villain", and "things aren't beautiful because they last but because they don't".

At least movie and Prime Sonic are flawed people with good intentions, not just a lifeless vehicle for the author's personal philosophy. Sonic's beliefs are never challenged and he's never forced to confront anything about himself. He's a static character, which isn't always a bad thing, but certainly isn't worthy of merit in the primary protagonist for a story that's taking itself even a little seriously .

@@LordExor Ummm... what? Alright, so as you mentioned yourself your problem with Sonic is that he's a flat/static character, which like... yes? I get it if it's not your preference but there are LOTS of stories with a static protagonist. I mean, there's an entire trope of the paragon hero which centers around the idea of static main characters. Movie Sonic and Prime Sonic are precisely what you said, flawed characters that need to learn stuff, and that's fine for their continuity, but it isn't, and never has been what game Sonic is. Sonic being a static character has been the case ever since Adventure 1 and on-wards. That doesn't make him boring or "lifeless" it just means that the stories are focused on how he effects the world around him rather than the other way around. You know, like lots of good stories out there. And the idea that he has no flaws is simply untrue, esp in the case of Black Knight where his depictions is much nearer that of the Adventure games. He actually has a lot more flaws than your average paragon hero. He's snarky, to the point of meanness sometimes, he rushes into situations - hell, a central theme of this story is how he does what he thinks is right no matter what anyone else tells him, which can certainly be a very big flaw depending on the situation. If you do not have a preference for flat protagonists, that is understandable, but that doesn't make those characters bad or lifeless. It's just a case of stories different than what you're used to.

And you're right, it is a personal preference. I'm fine with static characters in other contexts; pure evil villains, utilitarian secondary characters, etc. But your main protagonist? The one you're supposed to follow and empathize with the most? Why would I want a perfect paragon of shining virtue at all times, where the narrative never once challenges this character in any meaningful way beyond physical danger? Sonic in Black Knight comes across as condescending and preachy. Sonic goes from character to character and proselytizes until these poor wayward saps convert to his mode of thought. That's not endearing at all, even if Sonic can be proven to be objectively correct in all instances.

@@LordExor sounds to me you don't like sonic's character at a fundamental level. as the other person mentioned, sonic as a static character has always been game sonic's DNA, and imo can lend to much more nuanced stories like black knight, unlike prime and movie sonic
