Came for the camera advice. Stayed for Danny's cynical dry humor. You are a legend brother! GoPro batteries are an abomination. My GoPro 3+ black edition in its prime worked for about 30 minutes in the cold. Please consider giving us you best advice for video editing. Thank You!!

Danny, as a video guy I get asked all the time about what camera I use. I agree 100% that story is more important than gear. I think this is what makes your content so special. Keep crushing it!

I was always curious about this so thanks for making it. I'm also glad Im not the only one that hates GoPro batteries. I have lost so much amazing footage due to gopro battery dying within minutes after full charge

+1 for the RX100. I've had the mark II since it came out in 2013 and it's still going strong. Small enough to toss in my pocket and the image quality, even on that early version is REALLY good!

So sick! I started out with a GoPro 7 and a Canon M50 with a kit lens in a fanny pack, worked great for me. Upgraded to the A7siii with my swiss-army knife lens, a 24-200mm beast, for skiing I carry it in a "digital holster" it's tremendous. Converting a ski-pole into a monopod also helps with stabilization. Love the vids!

I'm a big fan of dji pocket 2 for my hiking films. It has a gimbal to stabilize, auto levels the horizon, great mic and battery lasts forever and is fantastic in cold weather. I use that for all my talking shots, sony a7siii for walking shots.

The point about communication is so good. I see so many people with top notch gear and nothing to tell.

So many camera gear youtubers who don't know anything about creating films.

Awesome video. This is a topic that I always want to know more about. Your advice of making it accessible is perfect. It's hard enough to get motivated to film anything when you are out there suffering. I mostly use my phone and Go Pro as well, I like your idea of using the clip. I am always struggling with storing it, definitely guilty of the 'excaliber' method.

Very well said... especially about the size and the fact that the best gear you don't have accessible is worth nothing. I personally made good experiences with the Olympus OM-D series. Or the latest iPhone - the software on these smartphones can do miracles.

Fabulous Danny, sage advice. Tempted by those enduro gopro batteries, it's just how fiddly they are too, grabbing that little tab with cold sausage fingers and the battery cover always flicks off and drops in the mud!

We need a video on your post-processing and color grading...we're always strugglisng with matching footage from differebnt camera.

This is great information! How much footage do you typically record in a day? How do you cue into what will be the key parts of a story while it's happening in real time? That's the real challenge for me in my mediocre adventures and tying to tell the story on my KZread channel. I either take too much footage or not enough... Either way it makes the edit challenging (or impossible!). If you take your Rainier video as an example, I can see why it did so well. An amazing story told in just over 10 minutes.

I was disappointed with that camera. When you are freezing your ass off on a mountain no one has time to switch lenses or modules. For this reason, I carry a camera for each function that is easily accessible exactly how Danny has with his setup

Would love to see a video about your gear garage, approach to organizing your gear

Can you do a video on your GoPro settings and any post processing you do?

Try a peak design capture clip, you can clip it to your backpack strap with little to no wobble and it locks a camera in.

I use the knock off peak design clip and it has been going strong for a while, total gamechanger

Surprised to see you and I ended up using identical cameras: GoPro 11, RX100 V, NEX-6 (Predecessor of A6000 series). They are tiny but mighty.

what about 360 camera for alpine adventures? have you considered that and the pros/cons etc? I have never used one but maybe they are better for shorter clips but no for youtube videos? Whats your opinion thanks.

Do you color-grade your footage from the Sony and GoPro to make them match better?

I'm surprised you wouldn't use a peak design clip for your camera to make sure it doesn't fall out when you bend over. The clip is awesome! I swapped all my gopro batteries out for the Enduro batteries, they work so much better. Those are the batteries that should come standard, not the stupid ones that shut the camera off even though it's at 60% still.

Great info here! Very clever on the Rx 100 and the Mammut small case, I am going to try that. I put my Rx 100 usually into a Lowepro Dashpoint 20, and either slip it through my waistbelt (hiking or backpacking) or use a 2 carabiner system to attach so it hangs on the side, but I can easily and quickly access it (learned from a guide in Canada when ski touring). Might want to also look into a chicken tamper camera bag. They will custom make any size you want and are decently priced. Have a wallet from them and have been happy with it over the past few years.

I gave up on gopro batteries in cold weather. I can't find any of those enduro batteries in Canada so i have my hero10 hardwired to a small'ish USB battery bank that's tucked inside my jacket.
