Hagan Core 89 // A Ski for Volcanos and Everything Else

Спорт

We have been searching for what we call a "Volcano" ski and the Hagan Core 89 has gotten as close as any backcountry ski to that definition. What is a volcano ski? For us it needs to be damp, versatile and light enough. Early on we were skiing the hardened and irregular snow found on volcanoes in the PNW on light weight carbon skis. We were nearly jostled to death. Not just that but the skis were easily redirected by all the strange snow and ice formations that only seem to be found on Volcanoes. Sidewise icicles resembling WW2 beach defense comes to mind. The Hagan is not the lightest ski for its width but it seems to meet at the perfect intersection of weight and dampness. I've taken it on Rainier twice plus Antisana and Chimborazo. It's easy to ski, which comes in handy when you're mentally and physically spent. It's not burdensome on your backpack and it doesn't require a big boot to drive. Like I said, for us it's the perfect Volcano ski.

    Christof, good on ya for passing these boards, boots, et al on to your guide. From casual observation of the Artisana video, that will be a significant weight drop he'll relish with each step upward.

    I couldn't imagine doing those mountains at that elevation with a setup that heavy. Andres was an animal for sure.

    So good to have Cristoff back. Thanks for the tech review. Leaving your gear for the guide was a class act move. Danny probably wouldn't have done that. (Danny always seems to lay a dig in on you so I'm sticking up for ya.)

    I'm only a hobbyist ski/board builder, but from my experience wood density can vary widely from batch to batch, and the amount of resin bleed when the ski is being pressed can also vary. The difference of 100g could even be that the core wasn't as dry as the core in their measured skis. Since each pair is mostly hand-assembled I think you have to assume they'll be advertising the best weight they've found in their pre-production or first batch.

    Sure there is a technical reason why manufacturers can't guarantee exact weight to the gramm... but then they should just advertise the average of what can be expected in production. Just doesn't feel right if you can almost be sure that the skis you will actually hold in your hands are going to be 100g-ish (per ski) heavier than what they were claimed to be. Sadly, apart from OGSO Mountain Essentials i don't know of any manufacturer doing it like that.

    Yeah I also understand how there can be variations. I'd just love for once to be surprised with a lighter ski, lol. Underpromise and overdeliver, Mediocre style!😜

    Thanks for sharing, great content as always. How do they compare to Movement Alp Tracks?

  • @cnuila

    @cnuila

    Alp Tracks are noticeably lighter and stiffer, and require a bit more skill to ski well, but rewards a strong skier with amazing performance at such a low weight. I feel like the Alp Tracks are some of the pinnacle examples of best skiing skis AT THEIR WEIGHT, which is amazing. Sometimes though, either because of ability or application, going the absolute lightest isn't the rightest.

    Any chance of a review on the Scarpa F1 XT, that I see Danny is rocking? Did any of you consider the Tecnica zero g peak? From what I’ve read it is the best thing out there - in that particular weight/performance segment...

    Hey, so I have a request for a review/demo video if you are accepting those: Can you guys cover the various backpacks you use/have used? Im a weirdo about backpacks. You guys have a bunch and you both seem to be thoughtful enough that you would have some strong opinions about your bags. Cheers!

    Great review that left me chuckling with the ending. Do you think it is different enough from the Escaper Nano 97 to warrant having both in a quiver? Aside from your quiver reveal, it’s been hard to find any feedback on the Nano so far.

  • @cnuila

    @cnuila

    Yeah definitely different. The escaper is much lighter for its width. Essentially it weighs the same as the core 89 but is 10mm wider and 8cm longer. It is a great all-rounder touring ski for a mostly soft snow area like Utah. The escaper is essentially the same ski as the Dynastar M-Tour 99 so anything you read/hear about that ski applies to the escaper. I had both and they are identical. (Same parent company same materials, same weight, I concluded they are the same ski)

    I own the Escaper 87 Nano and it is fantastic. It tracks very well on piste in my experience. I know that because we didn't have enough snow for a lot of off-piste routes as of yet 😢. It's light so it is manoeuvrable and quick when climbing. I got the Hagan Pure 10 bindings (the same as the atk crest 10 afaik) on there, which are excellent as well. Just looking forward to removing the brake, which i don't like. In summary I have to say I'm positively surprised by the skiing performance for the weight. Also there were/are deals all over Europe for the ski or ski/skin combo.

  • @SwiftAnthony

    Hagans are quite popular in Europe, built for the conditions you find here. Their freeride powder ski is 99mm I think, which is a joke for Utah conditions :)

    I don't understand the concept of a "volcano ski." It seems that people who get "volcano skis" want skis that perform poorly in variable and are incapable of high speed skiing in any type of snow. So really, they just want a ski that is light. If you are fit enough to climb whatever volcano you want then why would you explicitly choose a ski that is less reliable and not as capable? I think you did a good job talking about how this ski doesn't perform as a high performance ski, but I think that anyone watching this should also be told clearly that basically any ski under 1500g sucks in true variable. Sure some are a little bit ahead of others, but let's be honest, they all suck. The term volcano ski should be rebranded weight weenie ski because that's really what it boils down to. It makes sense if you are trying to go for an FKT, or if you have lower levels of fitness that prevent you from completing an objective due to equipment weight, but my point ultimately boils down to-if you can carry it up there, and you care about skiing, then you should. Heavier always skis better, is always more reliable, and is always less sketchy in variable.
