The Best Bits - Dinghy Show 2024

Спорт

If you're looking for a buzz at a boat show the RYA Dinghy and Watersports show has it in bucket loads. It's on our must visit list every year and together with my long suffering crew we scoured the show for our favourite stories.
We make no excuse for focussing on the people rather than a fancy edit of fast moving action, because it's people like this and their enthusiasm that make this show so special.

I'm 73 years young, raced Turnabouts (plywood learner), Finn's, Jollyboats, Laser's was at the helm of Omega one 54ft SS design aluminum sloop designed for Cowes and retired from our US Merchant Service as a captain. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, amazing the development in racing today, magnificent.

I've been one of the very first owner of Toper ISO in 1996 In Iitaly - Lake Garda. The distributor was Technovela located in Bergamo. It's amazing to see that new release.

As a former Flying Dutchman sailor from many decades ago…it is really good to see the 505 and rocket as kindred vessels. Lots of high tech appearing updates!

Flying Fifteen - great for a Father/Daughter combination! Contact your local club sailing FF's or class rep and they will probably have a boat for you to try 👍

The N18s tried the 'replace the hull' wheeze but within a few years a compleletly new rig had evolved. It got them through the transition period though.

01:30 good taste to love the 505.Don't be intimidated with all these controls. Take one for a spin. After 5 minutes, you will settle in. After ten minutes, you will wonder how you ever sailed without mast rake control at your fingertips. It really is such an amazing and eye-opening experience.

Unfortunate mis-speak.. in the chat about the Firefly, the guy mentioned the 1948 Olympic Games and ‘Mark Elvstrom’.. clearly he meant to refer to the mighty Paul Elvstrom

40 to 50,000 pounds for a Moth??? how on earth is that such a popular class, how do so many people have that kind of cash to throw on a tiny boat is unbelievable. That blows my mind, i could buy a boat to get me around the planet for that kind of spondoolies

A view from the UK. I've got to say on watching this as a 73yr old, who last sailed in his teens, was there anything on show for beginners, -' an introduction to sailing' - i hope there was. I felt one had to have evolved with the sailing products to know what you and your interviewees were on about. Talk about jumping on a moving conveyor belt. Who else but an experienced sailor could jump in the Marlow 50 and know what's what. The interview with Caroline Croft with the Merlin Rocket and her description of the mods on the boat was gobbledygook to me. She is a classic example of what i mean by evolving with the sport. Can we have a bit more of the more 'basic' introduction models as well as the 'billy wizz' boy racers please, that would be nice. As you have probably surmised, i'm NOT a SailGP, America's Cup person, i am an Oyster 495, Hallberg Rassy type person. Oh!, just a thought; Were you taking this opportunity to secretly patronise your own wishlist? That's why we saw the dinghy's' we saw?

Dinghy sailing by adults in the US is no where near as active, it seems. I would have liked a look at the SHOW, not the drill-down interviews with class sparkplugs. The title is not accurate on the video. Was really just a big advert.

Sadly...not a lot of innovation evident...has everything been done? Sailtech...? A one design moth knock off? Any new systems? fittings? Anything with a broad application? Anything that could lower the barrier to entry for the sport...any Tech Gamification of our sport?

So I guess all the old ISOs are competitively redundant now and are going to join the never ending pile of unwanted fibreglass cluttering dinghy parks around the country. Will all the new boats add 30kg of correctors when racing against old boats? Why on earth do builders constantly feel the need to 'develop' one design classes that were created 'NOT' to be developed.

The industry must sell more of what is already available but even better make improvements even if it makes existing models in the class obsolete. Back to cheque book competition. Not the best way to encourage the impecunious young to participate.
