𝗜𝗭𝗠𝗜𝗥 𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗬 - The Best (And Worst) Things About Izmir

Izmir, Turkey (Türkiye) is the country's third largest city. It has a very different feel and atmosphere compared to the other cities we visited in the country. Find out what we like and don't like about Izmir, and find out if we think Izmir is a city where we could live permanently.

Here is some more information about prices and the cost of living in Izmir as of Summer 2022. Remember that prices can change quickly here.
If you plan stay in Izmir for a year or longer and plan to rent an apartment then you might want to check out the sahibinden website. We personally would be happy in a small 1 or 2 bedroom about 60 square meters (or 650 square feet). Right now (Summer 2022) these are renting for around 5000 TL or USD$300 per month, but prices vary greatly depending on the neighborhood, age of the building, etc. We suggest adding another $50 to $100 for utilities (higher is summer and winter and lower in spring and autumn). For food we generally eat only two meals a day and eat out a couple of times per week. Based on current food costs, we think $350 per month would be a good food budget for us in Izmir. Our health insurance is US$250 per month, but health care is generally inexpensive here. Here is a budget we think we could live on in Izmir (but everyone's lifestyle is different and it might be higher or lower for you):
$400 Rent and Utilities
$350 Food
$50 Transportation
$100 Activities and Entertainment
$100 Miscellaneous
$300 Health Insurance and Health Care
TOTAL: US$1300 Per Month

    I am living in izmir and these are some of my thoughts. Summer heat is definitely a real issue and a by product seems to be the waterfront smells terrible a lot of the time. The sea is also generally very dirty and suffers majorly from red algae suggesting a high nitrate content. Don't live in a "grave" as the locals call them, that is a building over 15 years of age, as before that building regulations were not properly enforced and if there is an earthquake (and izmir is a very active area), they are highly likely to come down. The problem is that there a LOT of older buildings, most of the housing stock in fact, and newer buildings carry a price premium. There is a general lack of investment in the city as politically it is unpopular with the leadership and have obstacles put in their path and a lack of funding. This shows in the general feel of the place, roads and pavements, buildings, social projects etc. We planned to live here but have decided not to.

  • @snailtravelers

    @snailtravelers

    Yes, most of the northern regions along the Black Sea, such as Istanbul and Trabzon, are cooler in the summer. But they also have colder winters, sometimes snow. Turkey doesn't really have any regions with year-round mild weather like you find in places like Mexico or Chile. In Turkey the places with milder summers are cold in the winter, and the places with milder winters are hot in the summer.

    Great question! It probably seems as though we are never in Turkey when you look at our KZread channel. But our videos aren't always real time, I just make one video a month and spread them out. We actually split our time between living in Izmir and traveling. We will be having our two year anniversary for living in Turkey soon and so far we have no regrets or plans to leave Turkey. The biggest challenge for us has been the language barrier and trying to learn Turkish, this has been much more difficult than we expected. Still, for us the pros of living in Turkey outweigh the cons. The people are so friendly here!

    Hi, where is the best place to stay in izmir? Recommendations for food and things to do? Where was the restaurant with the view? Is there any parts of izmir coastal side where it is more conservative and less ibiza like?

  • @snailtravelers

    We think Alsancak and Passaport are two great areas of the city to stay in Izmir. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants here. From there you can easily get to Konak, which is the heart and historical center of the city. The train to Ephesus (Efus) leaves from Alsancak if you want to visit. The restaurant with the view is called Izmir Seyirtepe Restoran; you can put it in Google maps to see the exact location. It is a bit isolated and you would need a car or taxi to get there. Izmir in general is not a very conservative city compared to the rest of Turkey. The northern areas such as Bostanlı and Karşiyska are the least conservative and traditional, whereas Konak is probably the most "authentic". Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for watching!

    @@ForhanaChowdhury-u1x Food is generally affordable, about $6 for a full meal at a cafe. We haven't yet been to Kuşadası but have heard it is very popular, and it would also be a good base if you are planning to visit Efus. Çesme is another popular coastal area near Izmir. Food prices would be slightly more expensive in Kuşadası and Çesme compared to Izmir, but still reasonable.
