Very cool tutorial. I always love to see artists bringing recreating the old animation techniques with CG.
I definitely expected Turbulent Displace but blur + levels is a really clever and more effective way to achieve that. Great stuff as always
Thank you so much! Amazing work, I have no idea how all these combinations come to your mind, but please don’t stop!
you saved my life. I was struggling with hand-made animation and now I can do it with good results and easily! Thank you so much!
Exactly what I needed: A smoke loop animation. Thank you!
Saw this on Instagram yesterday and was really excited for it!

Man love your quick AE lessons, great stuff!
This is such an amazing tip! Thank you Ben!!
Your tutorials are some of the best I've found on After Effects. Short, sweet, to the point, and easy for a beginner (like me) to follow. Idk what I will use this in just yet but I'm sure I will be using it!

I wasn't completely happy with Vegas. I tried "Find Edges" and then "Linear Key Color" to achieve the same result. I got back to Vegas in the end but both technique have their own ups and downs. I thought it was worth mentioning. Thank for this great tutorial Ben, I am always amazed by what you share with us

Using Vegas to put a stroke on a layer using its alpha is a really good trick. Ive never been able to find a good way of doing this. Cheers.
3:56 woooooowwwww (mouth from right to left) I'd never thought of using alpha channel and gaussian blur together!!! Brilliant! 9:42 I just learnt from other tutorials that pressing 0 is better than pressing space because it loads before playing instead of playing while loading. I practiced this project for 4 times and I picked up something different in your example and my project. Really learnt a lot, thx!
this vegas effect trick amazed me, thank you a lot!

Thanks so much, I though I might lose some people at the start because it looks so crap before you add the blur and levels, haha
Ma men! 🔥🔥🔥
I don’t animate but I find it fascinating to see how this stuff is made
To apply a stroke to shapes like this, I always prefer to use Stylize>Roughen Edges with the 'Roughen Color' option. You can change the thickness of the stroke by tweaking the 'Border' and 'Edge Sharpness' values. This method also has an added benefit of softening/distorting the shape even more depending on the 'Scale' value of the roughen. Set the 'Scale' really low, like 10, to diffuse-granularize the edges; or set it really high, like 500, for a softer turbulence. You can set the 'Fractal Influence' parameter to 0 if you don't want any distortion at all and just keep the stroke. Roughen Edges is one of my most-used secret-weapon effects, it's pretty powerful once you get the hang of it.
Just wanted to let you know I really enjoy your videos.

Haha "smoke armpit". I like the jargon on this channel.
This is very good! I've used roughen edges in the past after the blur but the levels on the alpha technique seems more clean and intuitive! Also, I'm eager to try a procedural crack at this using particles or some noise. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much! Roughen edges is a great alternative, you could use it to add some texture to the line as well. :)

After spending years working in all the Adobe programs nothing is quite as creative and fun as after effects.
Awesome tutorial! I’d love to see this tutorial again but with smoke that doesn’t crop off screen! I’ve been trying to find a solution for that that still feels organic.

Hey Ben - love the videos, very helpful to me as someone who is learning AE whilst I use it for work. I actually want to make a looping 2d smoke and show the top, as I want the top to show (for a cup of coffee steam). Currently, I'm doing something using a feathered linear wipe, but I want to try your way of making smoke - any suggestions on how best to achieve this?
This video has been a HUGE help to me! Thank you! I am also wondering how exactly did the blurred vision effect. I feel like I missed something in there, but I can't seem to figure out what you did to achieve it.

You can also just add "Layer Style>Stroke" and have the same result in one step... but like cobra commander likes to say, "Not knowing is the other half of the battle!"
Great!!!

If you want to go through the pain of keeping them all in one shape layer, you can use a merge paths with a path offset that expands the shape and then another with the exact opposite to contract it back. If you get it set up correctly, it'll blob it together and you'll still have it as vectors. Of course then you'd have to do any turbulent displacement, etc. after.
