The Beauty Complex: Pilot Episode 1- The Club Kids
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Would you watch a show about beauty history? This 6-minute "Sizzle" is currently being pitched to networks. It’s a dream of mine to travel the world exploring beauty culture and makeup genres that have existed throughout history. I would love to hear your feedback! The possible name of the show is Beauty Complex, a play on words but I’m happy to take any suggestions!
Thank you to Walt Paper, Sacred Boy, and Kabuki Starshine for allowing me to interview you and share with the world your amazing art.
Walt Paper- / therealwaltpaper
Sacred Boy- / sacredschneidmiller_of...
Kabuki Starshine- / kabukinyc
Not only will I explore ancient and current beauty rituals but we’ll see firsthand toxic ingredients, application techniques, and even what certain shapes or colors signify within that culture.
In this video, we’ll learn about the 1990s NYC Club Kids and how their makeup and eye-catching looks inspire beauty today, then attempt to recreate a look inspired by their art.

@@RnR-Rebel May I ask if you ever had a chance to meet Nelson Sullivan in those beautiful days of magic and inspiration?? I'm a huge fan of his and watched every video he made that was released on YT. I adored getting to see that world and Nelson's perspective as he navigated and ventured through the scene in NY at that time! Wish I could've been there to see them in all their glory! He even has video of Ethyl Eichelbeger performing several plays she wrote, preserving her art and creativity for future generations to marvel at. I love Ethyl so much. @@ForReal_Lauren - I *think* Nelson was just an acquaintance if I’m remembering correctly. I wasn’t really into the “club kid” scene; tbh I think we were too “old” in our late 20s-early 30s! Not “old” in age, old as in we’d been dressing wild, doing crazy hair & makeup for well over a decade by then, you really tend to settle into your own personal style mashup (still always playing @ 63😉) by that age if you’re a creative. Many of my friends were in drag shows & I learned *more* about hair & makeup from them then at cosmetology school (bless😘); so I did know Ethyl (RIP😢, very kind to me, again more of an acquaintance) & others before the “club kid” scene. My friends & I never stayed static so we’d be involved in many scenes at the same time. The NYC underground scene was so wild from the mid-70s until gentrification started; once there were no more dirt cheap apts for us “starving artists” who made it *the* place to be it wasn’t nearly as exciting🙁. C’mon what other time in history would an artist open their LR as a gallery show because no gallery would show their work but now it sits in places like MoMA? It was like the Wild West but for creatives & some of us never stopped thank goodness! Love & respect to you as well! 🧡🎸🎶⚡️
I love the fact that you were able to interview multiple people who actually have participated in this part of makeup history! This was so well produced as well. I look forward to the next one!

obsessed with his quote
I'm litterally obsessed. I can't tell you how many times I've watched your shorts so I'm IN LOVE with this episode. I can not wait. I've tolerated other artists talking about vintage hacks and what they used/did but I love these more cause it's you!!!! AHH
I will watch ANYTHING you share.
This is style.
I've always been interested in makeup history. Thank you for making this series because I am HERE FOR IT! 🥰 This is just the series I've been wanting. I'm so glad you're not just covering ancient Egypt or Victorian Era makeup but any and ALL makeup history. I'm happy to see long form videos on this, even though I love your shorts, tiktoks, and Instagram stories 🖤🖤
obsessed obsessed obsessed! we needed this level of thought-out content and overall needed you on youtube, legend🧚🏻 i would watch hours of those
I guess you could say I was a Club Kid. Technically, I was a New Wave/New Romantic/Zolo guy, but all these years later it probably doesn't make much difference.

New Romantics may be one of my all time fav beauty moments. You guys inspired the club kids! That show is definitely in the lineup if I can get the money to make this happen 🥳

@@erinparsonsmakeup Funny thing is, I felt no affinity to Alig and his ilk back in the 90s. The New Romantics were about maximizing and transcending 200 years of the best fashion (the Romantic Period to the early 1960s) with a futurist twist. The Club Kids took a kitchen sink approach that seemed like outrage for the sake of outrage. Granted, most of today's observers would lump us all into one category.

@@zaraspark7467 Thank you!! I'll have a look.
I have adored your tutorials on ancient makeup for months now, and I am so thrilled to see you continue to develop new content based on makeup thru the ages!! All the best to you! I hope that this brings new eyes to how makeup can continue to inspire and how we keep building and referencing and developing on trends from the past. All the best for your museum!
This is so needed! I love the way makeup can reflect society and how it can be use as a form of rebelion or protest. Your channel is one of the few that talks about this in the internet
Please keep going Erin! I loved your shorts, but loved even more your longer videos (you’re such a good narrator, big charisma and beautiful voice). And this new concept is just amazing! Can’t wait to discover the history of makeup with you on Netflix or somewhere else!❤️
Omg yes I want this as a full series so badly so fascinating!!!!! And beautifully edited ❤️❤️
I CANNOT STOP WATCHING THIS EPISODE, AND I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT!!! I LOVE YOU ERIN
So exciting to see you're posting more KZread content, love love love your visions
MORE PLEASE!!! Literally the most exciting video I’ve seen on KZread in years. I cannot wait to see the other content you’ll make. You’re a gift to us all and are so inspiring!!!
Thank you for making this. It made me emotional, inspired, moved, grateful. Knowing history is so important, I feel like I relate to these people more than anyone in my life today. We need a revolution...
