I purchased my first copy of "Revolver" in September of 1966 not long after its release on vinyl, of course, which was all we had at the time. I then purchased a Parlophone copy while in London in 1970 after visiting Apple headquarters at 3 Savile Row. I was 16 at the time of my first purchase and to say that I was simply mesmerized by the album would be an understatement. Nothing like it had ever been heard before and nothing like it has ever been since. It was and is, in short, the greatest pop/rock album ever made. The Beatles ruled the musical world at the time and this album only reaffirmed their dominance and magnificence.

Hi Brian. I first heard Revolver when my room-mate bought it on its release in August 1966. We lived in London and I was 19 at the time. It was (of course!) mono at that time and played on a small "Dansette"-type record player. We were already Beatles fans, so you can imagine how blown away we were at the time - culminating in Tomorrow Never Knows. Still just as blown away over 50 years later. To use your words: life-changing.

1979. That's when I discovered all the albums - - though their singles were a regular childhood background throughout the Sixties. Every kid knew 'Yellow Submarine' without hearing the track on a record player - - that band was in the air, like a 10-year vapour trail. The recurring experience of hearing those albums in '79 was, 'Jesus they wrote that one, too?' over and over again, songs that were in the ether of any '60s childhood in England, some that were hits for other bands, like 'Good Day Sunshine. 'Jesus they wrote that one, too?' '

Hi Brian, I'm from England, it was 1966, I was 11 and one kid at our school had Revolver, he invited a few of us to listen to this masterpiece. it must have been the original mono, even at my early age The Beatles were so influential, there will never be a band like them, love and peace

Revolver isn’t just my favorite Beatles album it’s my favorite album period. It actually may be my favorite thing ever. It wasn't the first CD I ever bought (that would be cracked rear view by hootie and the blowfish) but it's the first Beatles album I ever bought. It blew my mind. Especially I'm Only Sleeping and Tomorrow Never Knows. My life hasn't been the same since.

I love Revolver. I have three cassette copies. One is sealed. The sealed copies go for a good amount, my one copy got eaten a long time ago and fixed it, but some sections of the tape sound a bit garbled. The second copy I bought was sold at my library when they got rid of their whole cassette catalogue after they became obsolete. It sounds great and I still enjoy listening to it.

I’m lucky that I live in Zürich and can find German pressings in most second hand Vinyl shops. I bought the German Magical Mystery Tour on the Apple Label recently for 25 Swiss Francs and its sound and quality blew my socks off.and it was because of your posts, you are the man for recommending the best sounding pressings. So Odeon Revolver is next .....

I’ve got a funny little story about ‚Revolver’. When I bought it on vinyl in about 1983 (I was about 13 then) my phase of being a music fan (and Beatles fan especially) had just begun. Until then, I used to buy a lot of audioplays on record or tape. In Germany we had a gigantic number of audioplays in our record stores (as I learned, this was a special German phenomenon). So, one day I came back home with the ‘Revolver’ album (which I just bought), sat in my room and listened to it for the first time (with headphones) when my mom came in. She asked: ‘What are you listening to?’ I showed her the album cover. And she asked me (and I’ll never forget these words): ‘Is it suspenseful?’ Because it was called ‘Revolver’ she thought it was an audioplay! Thank you for everything, mom.

i found this copy in NM in France today... i can say that this is a terrific pressing... I found two versions of this pressing : one with "oval" circles around the "ST 33" on the label, and one with perfect circles around this "ST 33". I found also 2 different matrix numbers for this release, but i think the best is SHZE 186 -A -1 / SHZE 186 -B -1

First time was in 80s when I was discovering Beatles and taped the albums first time from people who had tbe records. A friend taped Recolver on a cheap tape that was 30 mins per side. For ages I thought it finished on Got to Get you into my life which I thought was a strong ending. Eventually turning the tape over to discover Tomorrow Never Knows!! At first I thought the album was odd as there were so many styles and quite a lot of discordant music. Love it now of course

First time hearing (capitol records) Revolver: (I was 8 or 9) One of my sisters had borrowed her girlfriends copy Revolver. She returned it empty! We kept that Revolver stuck in the Rubber Soul jacket for years. I took all my sisters beatle records with we when I joined the Service in 1977, even though they were in horrible shape and mostly unplayable. First time hearing (parlophone) Revolver was when I bought the "British Import" at Tower Records in Honolulu 1979. That's when I learned Beatle records were different in England than the US versions. A big revelation to me!

Do you regard vinyl as the ultimate for listening to music still, in your opinion is it impossible to improve the sound with all the constant remastering that continues? I have an original UK mono version of Sgt Pepper which I got in 1967 is this as valuable as a mono Revolver? I also have the stereo UK Revolver which I got in the 70’s. Iam 67 and the Beatles first album knocked me out and bought it in 1963 then Meet the Beatles and so on, each one was an event, was in a band myself in the early 70’s great days

Well you know the Apple German has been my go to. I believe it was the first needle drop I did for you. What really amazes me about this issue is its wide Stereo separation. Is the Stereo separation on the earlier German Horzu's actually more wide? Also, some Orange US Capitol's and I believe all Purple label US Capitol's have a slightly different mix of "Got To Get You Into My Life." Ringo's drums are less burried after Paul screams the song title, all verses.

  • @BrianBringelson

    @BrianBringelson

Bert you are the main source that turned me on to these fantastic German pressings. And yes, the early Horzu's have a wider stereo image and it's really amazing. They also seem to have just a bit more low end as well which really adds to their appeal. Yes you are correct about the slightly different mix of "Got To Get You Into My Life". Kind of odd how those pressings have that different mix. The wild world of collecting vinyl!

I'm a bit late and your beautiful copy is no longer on your website. Still, somebody might appreciate a short clarification as far as the dates are concerned. What you call the 1969 German pressings are in fact 1972/1973 pressings. The HörZu logo on the label to the right of the EMI/Odeon logo is the TV screen/record player logo of HörZu which was developed for the 1972 Munich Olympics. In 1973, the HörZu/Odeon issues with the SHZE number gave way to Apple labels with the new EEC numbering which started (for this record) with 1C 062. Your 1971 copy is therefore a 1973 copy at the earliest and, if it comes with the later 1C 072 number, even later. But of course, the date of issue is not what decides about sound quality, just a bit of nerd information, so I'll definitely keep my eyes (and ears) open for these copies!

Of course now i consider It one of the BEST albums of all time. One funny thing is that i didn't understand why the Beatles would name an álbum after a gun . Later i found that a revolver is the mechanic device which make an album to turn. ( I am from south América, so english is not my native language)

I heard a bunch of MFSL Beatles albums a few years back and to be honest, wasn't that impressed. It's questionable what "master" tapes they had access to when they made those records and most of the time they just added a whole bunch of high end and low end EQ. Having said that, the Abbey Road MFSL is fantastic and one of my favorite pressings of that album. But as far as Revolver, I don't rate the MFSL pressing all that highly. Thanks for your comment!

Hello leonardo, I was looking for info about it when I saw your comment. Yes I think the version he's talking about as the greatest is from 1972 not 1969, as I can see by the HorZu "turntable logo" in the center. The 1972 indeed, has the 186 B-2 matrix, but I can't say if it's sounding better than a "-1"

Hernan Javier Zylbersztein it really comes down to the different mastering techniques used by the various record labels in the various countries. Also each and every record sounds different than another simply because of the pressing process and quality of the vinyl. It’s honestly what makes collecting records so much fun.

Great question. This copy of Revolver isn't "my" record. I've been purchasing records strictly for my website, it would be way too tempting (and expensive) if I kept some of the records I'm finding for the site. That being said, I do end up finding better sounding pressings than my own (as in this case) and I then set out to find myself a copy for my personal collection. I also did this with Paul McCartney's Ram album. Thought I had the best pressing but ended up finding a much better one that I sold on the website and then got myself a copy of as well. Hope that sheds some light on your question. Thanks for the comment!
