The vocals on the bridge are some of the most outstanding vocals ever recorded. "If I were you, I'd realize that I", etc. Paul's high harmonies with John's vocal are just soooo great. Anyone disagree? I thought not.

I've always felt that the greatness of the Beatles wasn't their hits, it was their albums. Other bands would put out an album with one or two singles, and 8-9 tracks which were rubbish. The Fabs could put out an album with no singles on it, and have something ;like 4 to six or seven tracks which were as good as any single. No Reply is one of those tracks. I've LOVED it since the first time I heard it in 1965. Thank you for the lesson. I'm learning it tonight.

By this time (I was like, 11), I listened to each new track on every new album, not believing that the wonderfulness could keep rolling and rolling out of them. We were like, 4 or 5 albums in at this point (depending if you were in the US or the UK). I always found this album amazing. How could they keep this up??? And then they kept on for another ~5 years??? BEST BAND EVER.

LOVE the way you break down the parts and then bring them all together at the end. LOVE how you put the fingerings to the cords up in the corner. LOVE how you are using similar guitars to what they played. Was BLOWN AWAY by your vocals. So excited to see what other songs you've broken down. I'm 62 and started playing guitar when I was 8. Although I think it is great platform for John's vocals, from the warmth of the "middle eight" through to the intensity of "This happened once before . . .", I do understand why it would not be one of John's favourites. Lyrically rather impoverished and another unrequited love song. Contrast this to the relative richness, musically and lyrically, of "Norwigian Wood" and, although a nice song, one I certainly enjoy like yourself, not one of John's best.

Lennon/McCartney work out 48/52% for song output. Can't remember who wrote the most but as for quality they were very evenly matched-John being more pentatonic sounding and McCartney writing slightly more sophisticated in structure I think. When I read, learn and study the Beatles I just become more and more amazed that you got two people from poor and relatively uneducated backgrounds that came together in one band and then George also showing talent also. It's like lightening in a bottle as though all the stars lined up for that 8 yrs they were so productive. Thank god they happened because they changed the lives of millions of people and inspired so many more.

Mike, your attention to detail is amazing. I started on guitar in '65 when I was 13... So as told my youngest brother years ago, I played these songs when they first came out. I couldn't afford that equipment back then but over the years my working collection has increased. One of my joys back then was to play a Ric 360-12 plugged into a Sunn amplifier. Those chiming notes are still ringing in my ears many years later! Keep up the good work, I really enjoy your love of the people, music and instruments of that time!

Hey Joe!! I did start on guitar in January'65, when I was 13... and I think this was the first Beatles LP I could buy, perhaps in February, when it started to be sold in Spain (in a discoshop called Sinfonía). It was the first track in face 1, same as Taxman in Revolver, surely enough to dedicate the next days to listen to it about one million times. And through 65 and 66 played some of these songs in different student bands in Madrid, girls shouting like wounded demons in all the theatres or schools we acted. Real Magic, still in my mind.

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate it. By the way, earlier this morning I had a song in mind, and all my old brain would remember was the first word, “I “ sustained for seven (or eight) beats. Of course, it was “I should have known better.” And in your analysis (CDG, with an E minor) I realized it was a perfect manifestation of first love. The intense happiness, mixed with doubt and uncertainty, followed by more happiness! What writing skill!

I can't play at all, but I love watching u break down the Beatles genius... the unbridled joy, fascination and love you have for the Beatles is the same as mine... enjoyed the back story John never liked the song.....while mere mortals like the rest of us would have thought we were the greatest songwriter in history to come up with even 1 of what he considered a garbage song...who knows why but this was always a favorite of mine.. it's a shame generations since mine have not gotten to experience a phenomenon sweeping the world like the Beatles.. P.S the first time my father heard "In my life" was the first time i saw him with tears in his eyes, he never complained again about my brother and I taking over his stereo and let us move it into our room... this 68 y/o says thank you man.

You are a genius, Mike. I’ve loved the Beatles for donkey’s years. I’m 72, and I actually went to one of their gigs in London and I’ve been besotted with them ever since. I love your wonderful enthusiasm and I’m always chuffed when I come across your most enjoyable posts Keep it up! Philbert

Great job Mike. I really like how you add George Martin’s contributions. He really was the 5th Beatle. They owe him a great deal for his contributions and guidance. It proves how a great producer really adds to the process.

This tune is wonderfully melodic with the hook, for me, being the A minor to E minor change accompanied by a cymbal crash. A great video on your part. The detail to strumming is something I'd not paid much attention to before but is such a key element.

Excellent, you make me smile, love those old Beatle songs, you do them so it looks like fun. Another thing that made these old Beatle songs so enjoyable to listen to was the hook. It was in the same key but so different that it was like another song within the song. This is a perfect example of that.

Great job on this. I've been doing my own remakes in my studio and when you get into the structures and harmonies on stuff like Nowhere Man, and You Won't See Me etc., You start seeing the genius behind the music. Their early songs were extremely short, some like 1:50 and many around 2:00 minutes long, but the musicality, tone, harmony was harder to produce than it sounds. It was the little nuisances that they all added and George Martin was a huge part of the finished product. There were literally five geniuses and talented guys in the studio. How they came up with these musical ideas was either drug induced or some kind of out of body experience. Out of 70 or so songs, there were only a couple that I didn't care for. Amazing stuff. Mike, you pretty much have it figured out. Thanks for that.

What a wonderful insight on this classic Beatles song! The F6-G6 passage is much overlooked and adds so much to the song! I'm sure Huey Lewis would agree as this is the reverse of his "Heart and Soul" which now sounds super-close to this masterpiece going G6-F6. What a wonderful job you've done Mike putting all the pieces together on this one. Bravo!
