People are incredulous when I tell them that there isn't a Beatles' song that I like more than John's "I'll Be Back". Two bridges, great vocals, lean production and a heartbreaking story, as well, about John being separated from his dad. Proof that a song with no wasted notes and beautiful chord changes (that A minor is killer) that can hold your interest for 2 1/2 minutes is a powerful piece of music. Like "A Hard Day's Night"...

Love this song. The way the final verse ends 'early' and we're just left with the unresolved guitars and riff - puts a lump in my throat. One of John's very best.

Mike, I have a very small KZread channel where I try to teach Beatle (and solo) songs, but I always tell my viewers if you want to play the songs the way the Beatles actually played them to watch YOUR channel. I am amazed at the amount of time and effort you put into your videos. Thank you sir for all you do for Beatle fans around the world.😎

A testament to how smoothly written this song is: Mike talks about the interesting and odd measure counts in the verses and bridge, and yet, when you play this song, nothing jumps out as strange. I've played this song for years and everything just seems natural. I never gave the measure counts a thought.

It is one of my all time favorite Beatles songs as well. Yeah, it might have a dreamy quality but it’s also one of the strongest melodies in all of pop/rock music and easily one of John’s best ‘white soul’ vocals ever. Up there with “Not A Second Time” and “Anna” as far as the blue eyed soul vocals go!

Songs that described feelings, like Help , Hide your love away, Yesterday, Michelle, Nowhere man and the list goes on and on ! When they did ill be back, it showed how they were maturing musically ,and changing music forever! Great job!

Mike, what can I say that hasn't been said? Maybe it's because I played these records on vinyl ever since I was about 11 years old and up, and have listened to them thousands of times, especially the earlier stuff quite frankly, that I can say that your lesson is so perfect. I remember then, and in present-day (and I'm almost 60 years old), that I would often play the song sometimes a dozen times in a row, just to pick up those little nuances on headphones (now, earbuds), to pick up those little details George performs, with the slight changing of the timing of his strumming, or other nuances - It's amazing. you mentioned something about the simplicity of this song but it is just at a pinnacle level of beauty - so true in many of these early compositions, especially this one. Like you said, the maturity in George and John as well, though my sentimental favorite is George, in these early tunes is astounding. Thank you Mike. Will continue to be in touch and support. Gabriel

As a guitar player (from Liverpool), I have heard other people reference John Lennon as a great rythmn guitar player but I have never fully understood why . But your videos have me given an absolute new found repect for the driving, playful and dynamic style his playing gave especially the early records. Your videos also have given me added apprecaition of George's underrated genius in those records. For a lad of 19 or 20, his playing really is incredible and breathtaking at times. Unfortunately, Mike, the Liverppol accent needs much work!! But please dont stop as it always gives m a chuckle! Best wishes, Chris

I remember hearing this number on local pop music radio in mid 1964 throughout the summer, as I was turning age 10 on August 15th '64. The harmonies of each group member and John Lennon's lead vocal has always stuck in my mind. The accompany guitars as you showed each of them, compliments the song so well. Your example of singing each group members vocals and the accompanying guitars was superbly performed by you. Seeing and hearing your analogy of I'll Be Back, broken down into its separate parts, offers such a great further appreciation for the Beatles complexities within their music. Thanks so much for this one Mike. Just an aside note here - I was building Crystal radios at age 10. Neighbors gave me an antique shortwave Zenith Transoceanic table model radio, about the time I turned age 11. I accidentally discovered the BBC one night and probably heard some of the Beatles music being played directly from London before many people in America heard it. I couldn't have quantified this at the time but I developed a greater fondness for listening to overseas radio than watching American television here in our hometown of Portland Oregon. By age 13 1/2 I bought my first astronomy telescope and began observing the night sky. [I was ironically reminded of this when I noticed your background in your studio here in this video tonight. It appears that you have a photograph of a galaxy on one of the screens as a wallpaper or a screensaver.] I nearly lost all interest in watching television because of listening to music on the radio and overseas on the BBC with the shortwave radio, and the rest of the time spent observing through my telescope, that I eventually waned from any further interest in American television. Little did I know then, that one day in my midlife at near retirement, I would begin working in background extra acting on Hollywood movie sets for the next 20 years. I began picking up an acoustic guitar that my first wife purchased for me in my late twenties, and dabbling and in learning as self-taught on piano. Listening to the early Beatles music as a child, and then watching your great performances in recent years on your KZread channel to analyze the music has really been a great entertainment to glean and to learn from.

My first Beatles album was Beatles 65 given to me by an aunt, I loved all the songs on this album , I always get blown away by with their chord ideas/ structures in songs without knowing much theory, that’s what made these songs magical, thanks Mike

Great! I can't play, but entertaining and informative as always. Helps me understand and appreciate all the more, the band I have loved above all others since 1963. For me, only the Beach Boys at their best come close.

I've been playing this song for years with the C before the G6 as per The Complete Beatles and George's riff on the A chord. I have to say you've enlightened me! Thanks for sharing the background information. I didn't know John was inspired by Del Shannon and I consider my self a pretty knowledgeable Beatles maniac. Thanks Mike for really loving The Beatles and their music. It takes a musician like you who truly appreciate their music and have the know how and technicality to convey your musical understanding to people like me who love them and their music. Thank you Mike.
