The Beatles Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Музыка

Inspired by Julian Lennon and Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland (not LSD), Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds songwriting was started by John Lennon (credited to Lennon/McCartney) and completed during the Sgt. Pepper's recording sessions. The making of The Beatles' Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is from the 50th anniversary celebration surrounding the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
"Sgt. Pepper's Musical Revolution" is a look behind the scenes of the album’s creation and cultural legacy after its June 1, 1967 release. The Beatles PBS broadcast includes “material never before accessible outside of Abbey Road Studios, including recordings of studio chat between band members and isolated instrumental and vocal tracks” while revealing “the nuts and bolts of how the album came together” and offering insights into the choices made by The Beatles, Brian Epstein and George Martin.

    And acid restores one's child-like view of the world -- hence Strawberry Fields Forever, John's favourite childhood play area, a thick wood bounded by a high brick wall, not to mention all the Pink Floyd songs from 1967 recalling their childhood experiences.

    I could never figure out why Lennon's voice had the ethereal quality it had on this masterpiece tune. I guess after George Martin did his majick on "Strawberry Fields" it was just more tape speed technique to create new sounds. Genius. I believe Jimmy Page did the same thing on Robert Plant's voice on "Song Remains the Same" to give it the higher pitch. But The Beatles did it first. Go figure........:-)

    Well, it should perhaps be rephrased to say that by including the dissonant notes in the full chromatic A scale, Paul's lines open up the natural possibility of the modulation. It's true that for anyone used to this stuff--and I'm pretty basic just the same--it also seems odd for him to make so big a deal about the chord change to f-sharp minor, which is simply the natural minor of A major. (G major is also totally natural to this progression.) This doesn't take away of course from the fact that the full chord sequence, especially the dreamy B-flat half-step (more typical of John than Paul), is terrific, but that's just normal for the best of the Beatles.

    He states at 5:26, Lennon and McCartney were clearly loving their newly discovered wizardry of modulation. Really? They had been using modulation for years. Just one incredible example of John Lennon's mastery of modulation is his composition, If I Fell from 1964.

    You can hear John straining to get those notes in that take, and the finished version sounds like his voice is significantly sped up. (They did speed up their vocals on a few of their songs -- compare the mono and stereo versions of She's Leaving Home, and, there's a film clip of them playing the fast, heavy version of Revolution in which you can see John playing an 'open' A chord [but with a flat 1st finger barre so he can play the rock-n-roll 6th note with his 3rd finger] but the song is somewhere between B & C concert pitch.) I reckon this song was written on acoustic guitar down in E -- it works really well with the open B & E(high) strings in that key.

    I do not agree with crediting McCartney with modulations in the Beatles, nor in John Lennon's songs. As a matter of fact most of the first remarkable modulations in Beatles compositions were actually written by John: Not a second time, If I fell, you're going to lose that girl, to name a few. Yes, McCartney was and still is a great composer, but Lennon was at least just as great. Lucy is mostly a Lennon song, and quite possibly the greatest in Pepper album.

    Great points. Lennon's songs were the most harmonically complex in The Beatles catalog. The song "Because" (Lennon) is also a great example of that.

  • @daviddamico3615

    @daviddamico3615

    Yep, I agree. I don't think it's safe to just assume McCartney had to do with modulations in Lucy. He did however become a lot more interested in experimenting with bass notes after Pet Sounds was released( "The Fool On The Hill" is one of my favorites). But like you said, people seem to forget that John Lennon was a great creative mind not just lyrically, but musically as well. I always thought that John was a bit more naturally creative with his compositions and that Paul had to work a little harder whether it was classical training or such to tap into his creativity.

    Yes, it's as if he is saying that Paul is responsible for 'changing the harmonic structure of the whole song' -which is untrue, as the 'destabilising' chromatic bass line, with the 'rogue notes' is already present in the lower notes of the 'music box' counter melody which John wrote. Paul is essentially just doubling up. All the chord progressions and modulations in this song are Johns.

    It's too much of a coincidence. I reckon little Julian asked his mum (Cynthia) 'What's this LSD that daddy and Paul and George and Ringo are always talking about?', and I reckon his mum remembered Julian's favourite girl in infants school at the time ("Lucy") and made up "Lucy Sky Diamonds", which then prompted (or Cynthia prompted him) to paint his picture. After all, it was illegal (still is) and the British Police had been busting Rock/Pop stars with a vengeance, even over mild marijuana, so they couldn't have Julian blabbing about LSD (as little kids are apt to blab about anything they hear). Acid was very important to The Beatles, Paul even said to the Press around this time (give or take a month) that he thought it was a wonderful mind-expanding experience (and he was the last of the Beatles to try it, having many reservations initially). They were first given it in late 1965, and you can hear its influence on Rubber Soul, and even more so on Revolver (early-mid '66). Four whole Beatle albums (four-and-a-half counting the Rock side of Yellow Submarine soundtrack) devoted to consciousness raising and tripping out. Psychedelic means "consciousness-raising", I think the term was coined by Timothy Leary -- he had been researching LSD since the late 1950's. Cary Grant had LSD-therapy back then for hang-ups he had with women. They were also curing alcoholics with it back then.

    "John and Paul" did not make the music to the song. It was Lennon. And the music is typical Lennon. McCartney has never claimed he contributed to the music. McCartney helped Lennon with the lyric. i think McCatney exaggregates his contribution there. Soon we will perhaps hear from McCartney that he made a part of the music too.
