“Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” is typically thought to be a song about drugs. Mainly because its lyrical concepts are absolutely wild. The track invites you out onto a river as you pass through tangerine trees and marmalade skies, eventually meeting a girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

The imagery of things like “cellophane flowers”, “rocking horse people” and “newspaper taxis” all sound like references to hallucinations one might experience while on LSD. And upon further inspection of the trippy track, you could also speculate that its title is code for LSD. Even the BBC were quick to ban the tune from radio for it’s supposed drug references. But the band called it all just a coincidence, suggesting the real roots of the track are much more innocent than many may have believed. Let’s discover The True Meaning Behind LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS.

It's definitely a coincidence, simply because the Beatles already confirmed it to be one. If it was actually about LSD, they would have said so. They never lied about their drug usage, so why would they lie about it just for this specific song?

Nah, The Beatles knew what they were doing. They had to keep the music industry and public happy so they said it wasn't about acid. John Lennon would always mess with interviewers.

@redVIII It was definitely more stigmatized back then, and the interview on the Dick Cheney Show where John is denying its about LSD was in the early 70s, possibly around the time the FBI was trying to get him deported. So I don't think he would openly be saying he's writing songs about drugs at that time

This was the song that got me into the Beatles. I was around 12 years old and up until that point I'd only heard some of the Beatles' early songs in passing so I thought it was all shallow pop stuff. That and my mom loved them so of course they must suck (gotta love kid's mentalities lol) But as soon as the intro started to play and John's surreal vocals kicked in, I had goosebumps all over. And it still gives me goosebumps. Such an amazing track and an amazing album. 💜💜💜

I actually had a whole semester in one class when I was in High School devoted to the Beatles songs in the 70's. I remember when we studied the Lucy song word for word and the teacher said the song was about LSD.
At some point in the mid sixties, George and John had a dinner party with their dentist who slipped LSD into their coffees without them knowing, at a time when LSD was a very little known drug in the UK. I always assumed the song was inspired by that.

Good video. Just to nitpick at 3:13, tape speed is not measured in cycles per second (Hz), it is measured in inches per second (IPS).
Best channel on youchube
It was easy to use Alice in Wonderland for drug references (think "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane) because Lewis Carroll was was using references to drug experiences in the books. Note that mind altering drugs were legal and widely used in the nineteenth century, although in milder doses than the sixties counter culture would have encountered. The bottle that says "drink me" could have been a reference to addiction. There are a lot of cultural references in the Alice books that make no sense to us now but that Carroll's readers- who were mostly adults- would have understood.
I cannot find the backing track you use for this video but I need it so bad 😩

03:40 i don't know how this instrument you show is called, but i don't think it's the one that's being played in this song, the tambura is a very big instrument, usually with 3-4 strings, and it doesn't look like a guitar at all, it also does not have frets and the neck is very thick, as you're not meant to fret it at all, but instead only play open strings.

how are you able to post this video without copyright strikes? I tried to do an unlisted video just to share with friends that had a beatles song playing in the background for about 40 seconds and youtube deleted it.
There's a story about a kid who came up to John and said his English teacher was using Beatles songs in their class to analyze the lyrics and their meaning. John then created I Am The Walrus as a joke so the kids and the teacher would never come to a consensus because the song, obviously, have no real meaning. Lucy in The Sky might be just that, too.
LOVE BEATLES CONTENT
Thank you. I had always wondered about this song. Alice in Wonderland influence makes a whole lot more sense than them being in denial of a drug reference when they are fairly open about other drug influences and references. There would be no reason to deny it was about LSD if it actually was about LSD.

What I find more ironic is that a child came up with a name. They often say that children have more open minds than adults much in the same way an adult would have an open mind during a psychedelic experience. In my opinion, the explanation of this song makes it even more trippy.
Lucy in the Sky gets a mention in "I am the Walrus" ... Mister City policeman sitting Pretty little policemen in a row See how they fly like Lucy in the sky, see how they run I'm crying, I'm crying To me I think they are singing about Lucifer the falling angel, most images said angel he is falling in a night sky. Makes more sense then to link those in control as luciferin.
How did you make this.

I always loved Yellow Submarine.
I like the knockoff version of the song that plays in the background, it sounds like the intro to an epic video game boss fight
I'm sure it was made under the influence of LSD but that's not what it's about. What I find hilarious is that songs like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and Eight Miles High were banned but Here Comes The Nice by The Small Faces wasn't despite it being blatantly obvious what it was about. LSD also meant British pounds , shillings and pence in pre-decimal currency. That had nothing to do with Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds but there was a song called LSD by The Pretty Things which had lyrics about needing money but it was obvious what they were really referring to.
