The Beatles - Free As A Bird

Музыка

The Beatles performing “Free As A Bird.”
The Beatles Anthology project was a huge undertaking and to complement the historical and archival material that was made available both on CD and on video, the band recorded two new tracks. Released in December 1995, ‘Free As A Bird’ was the first of the new songs. Instead of recording a completely new composition together, Paul, George and Ringo created a track based on John’s 1977 demo, recorded at his and Yoko’s home in the Dakota in New York City.
Jeff Lynne, a good friend of George Harrison’s and a fellow member of the Travelling Wilburys, was drafted in to help with production. The ‘Free As A Bird’ video had it’s first public outing on America’s ABC TV on Sunday November 19th 1995, and the track was subsequently aired on BBC Radio 1 the day after - the day before Anthology came out. The single release followed two weeks later and made No.2 on the UK charts, while in the US ‘Free As A Bird’ enjoyed an 11-week run on the best-seller list, peaking at No.5.
Joe Pytka, a talented American filmmaker who had made several music videos with Michael Jackson, directed the beautiful video. The visual concept was a ‘bird’s-eye-view’ of countless Beatles songs.

The music video for "Free as a Bird" was produced by Vincent Joliet and directed by Joe Pytka and depicts, from the point of view of a bird in flight, many references to Beatles songs, such as "Penny Lane", "Paperback Writer", "A Day in the Life", "Eleanor Rigby", "Helter Skelter", "Piggies", "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Doctor Robert", and "The Fool on The Hill". Between 80 and 100 allusions to the Beatles' story, music and lyrics in the video have been estimated.

The Original Lennon demo. His lyric on the middle section .... “What ever happened to, the life that we once knew?” Then hums because not written yet. Fast forward 20 years Paul fills the blank line with… ”Can we really live without each other?”... Where did we lose the touch that seemed to mean so much?… Always made me feel so free!” I just well up at that point...beautiful and so sad at the same time. Completing and complementing each other even beyond this life x

After 25 years, we finally heard those Beatles harmonies again. A sound that was missing in all of their solo careers. Every Beatle contributed to this song. They worked together again, for the first time in so many years. Magical. This song sounds so incredibly, unmistakingly Beatles. They still had it, and still have it. RIP John and George. Two musical geniuses.

But my favs are: Here, There, Everywhere, A Day in the Life, Rain, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Across the Universe and Yesterday EDIT: Ok..so it’s April 2022 now. I’m recently OBSESSED with “I’ll Follow the Sun”. I can’t explain it but it’s one those songs I haven’t listened to for years perhaps. Than driving home from work one day it comes on from a playlist and It struck the mood so perfectly, with the weather and scenery and everything. (I live in Colorado sooooo amazing scenery is everywhere) It’s something about it to. The melody from Paul is short, simple but super catchy. After a few listens you’ll find yourself walking around the house singing “One day, you’ll look…to see I’ve gone. For tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun” it’s beautiful…Not sure if I’ll put it in my top 10, but it is damn climbing with each listen.

The Beatles are like Bach, Handel, Mozart and Beethoven. They have touched our lives with their timeless music. Rest in peace George and John. Thank you for the music. Paul asked Yoko for any music John recorded as demos but never officially released and she sent him over some tapes. Real Love and Free As A Bird were two of those demos John recorded but never released and so Paul, George and Ringo with Jeff Lynn's help, polished them off and released them as part of the Anthology album.

Actually what you're hearing here is not the original 1995 mix but a remix done in 2015 (I'm surprised there's no mention of this in the video description) when the "Beatles 1+" video collection was released. The isolation of John's voice is slightly better than on the original mix, and among other things, they used a different take of George's lead vocal. But still, re-doing it with 2023 technology for an official release would certainly have been a good idea (there are some excellent "fan versions" available here and there).

Which version of John? The minimalist who wrote & sang the songs for his first LP, Plastic Ono Band? Or the drunk who barely managed to produce an album for his pal Harry Nilsson? Or the overly romantic stay-at-home daddy to Sean? Lennon mostly did not care for studio gimmicks, which is what hack Lynne did with this paltry little demo tape. Hardly a masterpiece; I would not put it in the top 50 Beatles songs.

I have such a strong emotional resonance with this song that I don’t even fully understand. Every time, for the briefest of moments, it transports me back to being a little little kid. Like so young that you don’t even have memory of it. Yet at the same time, it gives me a sense of melancholy. It takes me to a time I don’t remember, and makes me sad that I’ll never be able to experience it. It’s not even the lyrics that do this to me, it’s just the vibe of the song.

Rumour has it that, upon hearing John's voice during the recording sessions, the surviving Beatles had to pretend that he had simply left the room. They mention that in the Anthology episodes. It was Paul's idea for them to pretend that John was just away on holiday and rang the rest of the band members up to say "Finish the tape, I left you the cassette, I trust you!". Ringo particularly liked the idea. They didn't want to treat John like some kind of martyr figure or heroic rock god because John never would have gone for that.

[Chorus: John Lennon] Free as a bird It's the next best thing to be Free as a bird Home, home and dry Like a homing bird I'll fly As a bird on wings [Bridge: Paul McCartney] Whatever happened to The life that we once knew? Can we really live without each other? Where did we lose the touch That seemed to mean so much? It always made me feel so [Chorus: John Lennon] Free as a bird It's the next best thing to be Free as a bird Home, home and dry Like a homing bird I'll fly As a bird on wings [Bridge: George Harrison] Whatever happened to The life that we once knew? Always made me feel so free Ah Ah Ah [Verse 2] Free as a bird It's the next best thing to be Free as a bird Free as a bird Free as a bird Oooooo [Outro] Free Made for John Lennon

There’s a mistake at the end. It is not “made for John Lennon”. John says, “Turned out nice again, hey mister”. These are the words that you can hear in this video. In the original 1995 mix, these words were reversed, and it sounded something similar to “I’m John Lennon”.

You can hear John's voice much more clearly here than in the original. Its not as distorted. Kudos to whoever went back and cleaned the sound up a bit as music tech has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 25+ years. Can't wait for the historic final new Beatles song in November, 2023!

And George's voice is different too. It's another take. On the first version he says "the life we once knew" and here he sings "the love"

This song and Real Love came out when I was in middle school.... our school did an entire Beatles series during my 7th grade year, the same time the anthology dropped. Looking back, I now get how the teachers were all mostly 40's then, and had grown up on the Beatles... must have been amazing for them to share that with us. I fell in love with the Beatles that year, and have carried their tunes with me through my life. When my wife and I got our first dog together, we named her Lucy (in the sky). Then we got Sgt. Pepper. Then Penny Lane. 15 years later they are all gone, except Pepper. But our love remains... This song will always be in my heart. And the harmony on Real Love has always reminded me of my mom singing to me as a kid for some reasons. The Beatles will live on forever.

Sounds like we are about the same age. Growing up in the 90's all the friends were hooked on the "new stuff" and I just couldn't be dragged away from the Beatles. Has been and always will be my favorite band. How lucky are we to get a new Beatles song in '23?!?

When i hear this song i can't help but wonder if the surviving members of the band sit there and really miss those days when they were together. The "Whatever happened to the life that we once knew, can we really live without eachother" part really proves that. The"When did we lose the touch, that used to mean so much" part is reminding me of the time the band broke up. It's really heartbreaking but i guess anything that good doesn't last forever. I really wish John and George were still alive ,and they could have joined Paul and Ringo to cut one last album. I'm sure it would have blown all this modern music out the water.

They did miss it. Before Ringo listened to John's original tape for the first time, Paul called him and advised him to "bring a handkerchief."

This song was recorded by John as an unreleased demo in 1977. In 1994 Yoko Ono gave it to Paul McCartney for him George and Ringo to work on it, and they released it as part of their 1995 Anthology Album/TV special. This is as close as we'll ever get to a Beatles reunion.
