    Yeah. I adore the Beach Boys through Pet Sounds. By all accounts, it was not long after that album that Brian really lost his mind and the drugs took over. At that point I think he started to throw more stuff against the wall, and some of it stuck. But at the end of the day, holy shit what an amazing band on so many levels.

    I think it's more like no one was gangsta. Nobody was saying in, say, 1961 "what an incredible artistic statement this is" when a new album came out. Albums, with few exceptions, were not taken seriously until the mid 60s. It was Brian, The Beatles, Dylan, etc that made people consider the album as an art form on a mass scale. All the "gangsta's" before that were making singles or were blowing people away live on stage.

    the beach boys didn't record pet sounds, the wrecking crew did.pretty sad when a pop band has to use another band to play instruments that they should have been playing themselves, like bass,guitar,drums, and organ.of course the album wouldnt have sounded as good if the beach boys did it themselves.

  • @the_original_jt

    @the_original_jt

    @@willmurphy3525 Technically, he wasn't a replacement for Al; Al played stand up bass on Surfin' and was never a "member" at that point, as that was more or less Brian's song. When they officially became The Beach Boys, Al was gone and Dave (and his parents) signed the initial recording contracts, not Al. Al was brought back in to pay bass when Brian started bowing out, and at times, when Brian was there, they were a three guitar band (with Al). After Dave was forced out by Murry, Al slid into Dave's old role. I am not discounting Al by any means, as he made huge contributions, but Dave is usually glossed over, treated as a stop gap between Al's tenures, and that simply was not the case.

    I don't remember when I first heard The Beach Boys, but when I was 14 (in 1993) my family moved out to California (from Kentucky) and my parents left me and my siblings at a Kinder Care for the day while they went house hunting without us. I don't remember anything about that day except that they would play music while we ate lunch and Kokomo came on and it was a huge hit for us kids and we were all singing along as much as we could. Plus May 24th is my birthday so I absolutely have to watch it.

Also, since and because this documentary is coming to Disney Plus, Surfin' Safari became a Disney Re-Micks clip and God Only Knows played during a trailer for Toy Story 4. I will include Surfin' Safari in Time Shift when my character have a paradise bash in a ball during their beautiful vacation in Hawaii.

    I hope this is more than just Early Days -> Pet Sounds -> Beatles rivalry -> Smile/Brian goes crazy. That story has been told so much lately between Love and Mercy and Long Promised Road. Show us their inventive lo-fi Carl-led late 60s/early 70s period, their 80s pop culture/nostalgia act Mike-led resurgence, everything. Throw out the cliches and tell us the interesting story about the most incredible and dynamic American band of the 20th century.
