The Battle of Abu Klea | British Empire Vs Sudanese Tribesmen | Total War Cinematic Battle

The Battle of Abu Klea, or the Battle of Abu Tulayh took place between 16 and 18 January 1885, at Abu Klea, Sudan, between the British Desert Column and Mahdist forces encamped near Abu Klea. The Desert Column, a force of approximately 1,400 soldiers, started from Korti, Sudan on 30 December 1884; the Desert Column's mission, in a joint effort titled "The Gordon Relief Expedition", was to march across the Bayuda Desert to the aid of General Charles George Gordon at Khartoum, Sudan, who was besieged there by Mahdist forces.

We seem to forget that the British Empires crusade to abolish slavery had seen Gordon already in Sudan on campaigns to destroy the slave routes and cities built around a 2000 yr old slave trade from West Africa. He had hung many high ranking officials who carried on slave trading after accepting financial compensation by the British to end their trade and it made him highly unpopular amongst the Sudanese leaders.

A good point. One thing, though, this was the East African slave trade, not West African. The East African slaves came from southern Sudan and Uganda and were sent to Egypt and Arab countries. West Africans were sent to the Americas.

@@peterdavidchessell5952 He did NOT say he was in that particular battle, just "the war." Very likely he's talking about the overall "Sudan War" that ended in 1899. Entirely feasible he was old enough for it, just not for the one battle that this video shows.

@@peterdavidchessell5952 I didn't say this battle, I said this war. The Mahdist War was 18 years long. He was a young 23 year old soldier at the Battle of Omdurman. He even served in the Boar War after the conclusion of the Mahdist war. When World War 1 was approaching he re-enlisted as a drill sergeant originally. Training young lads before they were shipped off. However, with so many young soldiers dying in the trenches he was sent out himself to fight

It's somewhat ironic isn't it? Many British gave their lives to stop slavery, fighting against African peoples who wanted to maintain slavery and yet, many people, in the west, of African origin are incapable of realising the sacrifices the British made.
